Captain_Greenout This is tiny hunt #2 with Wyrm Whisker F1's to find a suitable male and female to create F2 seeds. The 1st hunt resulted in me selecting a male that ended up herming in 3rd week of flower, and I wasn't really down to create headaches for myself later, so I pulled the plug on the first tiny hunt.
As is typical for an F1 hunt, I am selecting for vigorous growth and healthy leaves/stems with no unwanted oddities. After that I might select for aroma (done with a leaf or stem rub in early veg), but for F1's it's really just about having healthy plants without any deformities or signs of disease.
I'm doing a grow journal for this one as I believe this hunt is looking promising, and I've already observed extreme vigor in a couple plants (#3 and #4) that is already 2 days ahead in growth compared to any in my previous hunt.
------------
[2026-Feb-02-Monday] Started ~40 seeds on a wet paper towel and placed inside a ziploc bag. Placed ziploc bag facedown between two fluffy facecloths on a heating mat set to 80F/27C.
[2026-Feb-03-Tuesday] taproots started to show ~20 hours later. I selected those seeds that were already showing a taproot and planted them in seedling cups in homemade organic soil. The rest were discarded.
[2026-Feb-06-Friday] Germination of 15 seeds successful. 1 seed got eaten by something, 10 seedlings are healthy, and 5 seedlings are a little behind due to seed helmets or weak roots.
[2026-Feb-07-Saturday] 6 seedlings were culled for being defective (sluggish, deformed, small, lanky). 9 seedlings remaining, all appear to be healthy.

Captain_Greenout [Day 7 | 2026-Feb-14] - There are now 4 seedlings remaining, and a couple of them are quite vigorous, specifically #3 and #4, and #3 is especially interesting as its first fan leaves are 5-fingered. I wasn't expecting that, but that's part of the fun. The survivors of week 1 have been transplanted into bigger containers to keep them happy.
I often will place a marker by the seedling that has the strongest smell (via leaf rubbing) after the first 4 or 5 days, and that plant always ends up being male 100% of the time with these F1s. #3 was the one this time, and is already showing deep serrations and longer straight side-fingers that I've only observed in males so far, so I'll assume its a male until proven otherwise. #1 and #5 could go either way. #4 is the most vigorous. With this cross some of the females have been absolute giants, towering over males and blocking out their light. I wouldn't be surprised if #4 ends up being female and the seed bearer, she's growing so fast it's noticeable after just a few hours between check-ins. That said, this is all guesswork based on my past experiences with this F1, and I could be completely wrong about my predictions. However, making predictions helps me pay attention to small details that may end up being useful in the future.
