Plant had its first real rain on 6/9/19. Rained all day so I think it should be good for a while. Topped the plant as well on 6/9/19 right at the 3rd node. I see some earthworms have moved on in so I am pretty excited about that!

Plant seemed to be slow to recover from the topping. We have had over excessive rain which I believe threw the pH off. The upper leaves showed some issues. Added a bit of lime raked in to the top of the soil. The new growth looks good however.

The excessive rain continues to the point where I have not once needed to water the plant myself. New growth is finally starting to grow rapidly. The pre-flowers are starting to show but I am still having issues sexing the plant. I am leaning towards it being a male based on its growth but with the issues it was having I am unsure if that was the cause of a different type of growth pattern

Plant was showing signs of nutrient deficiency and still possible pH issues Did a top feed of 2 cups lime (soil pH read 8+) 1 cup Mexican guano 1/2 sup Jamaican guano and 1 cup worm castings. Watered on 6/27/19 with 1 gallon pH'd to 6.3. I believe I am seeing an emerging pistol but my eye is too untrained to be sure.

Continue to have higher than average rainfall during this time of the year with rain during the evenings of the 1st, 2nd and 4th. The plant was also watered on 6/29/19 for the first time since it had been a while since the last rain. Hopefully this does not throw off the pH of the soil again.

Watered on 7/15/19 with 1 gallon pH'd to 6.3. I have a little bit of concern about pHing the water to the low end of things when it is clearly used to the rain water which I will assume is around 7 but I could not bring myself to pH the water separately for the outdoor guys.. What I once thought to be the beginning of balls has grown out to a little side shoot so I am still holding on until I can very clearly see male signs. It will be a shame with the size for it to turn out male but it has been a great experiment into outdoor growing and I have already learned things for next summer. I believe I will be placing more than 3 plants next summer and will use seeds I have purchased rather than just kind of seeing what I can do.

Fed 1/2 cup Mexican guano and 1/2 gallon worm castings on 7/19/19. Raked into top soil in preparation for a rain that evening. I continue to see signs that have me leaning much more towards female. I see what I think are pistols every once in a while but when I go to capture it on camera I can not fins it again so I will continue the waiting game. This plant has absolutely exploded at 4 feet tall and 2 feet wide. I do not even know how I would handle a harvest of that size but I am actually quite hopefully to be able to find out. The yield that will bring if female should be such a stark difference to my yields indoor with a T5.

Heavy rainfall on 7/23/19 and short daytime rainfall on 7/29/19. Aside from that I have only needed to do the one supplemental watering. Everything looks good aside from what looks to be some strange purple coloring on the inside of what looks to be the beginning of flower. When it is looked at under the microscope, it appears to be a very purple coloring and it appears on about 3 different bud sites on the plant. My initial thinking was that it was mold until I inspected it closer under the microscope and it appeared to be very much purple colored as opposed to black. If anyone has some ideas or suggestions as to what this may be and how I can correct it, I would greatly appreciate it.

The insides of a small number of future bud sites are showing some strange purple discoloration. My initial thought was that this could somehow be mold however under the microscope it is very purple. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (see images week 11)

Theres nothing to worry about here friend , this could be due to a variety of things weather or genetics , its hard to tell but I can assure you that your plant is fine and that the purple will grow and grow and it will turn out beautiful . If it was mold it would be stringy and white puffy almost . shes looking happy and fine ! I hope this sheds some light into your grow !

Watered with 1 gallon of rain water on 8/3/19 collected from last rain to avoid any pH fluctuations. Turns out the pH of the rain water is around 5.5 so it is no wonder that there were fluctuation signs when they were watered with the bottled water at 6.3. Due to growth patterns I am still fairly confident that the possible Real Gorill4 is accurately labeled which means it is female. If this is indeed the case, the growing patterns of the Secret Formula have it looking the same as the female. Possible pistol signs but it is so early and in so few areas I am still not confident enough that it is pistols I am seeing. This plant (tree) is about to crest the privacy fence and we are barely even starting flower!

Plant was watered on 8/13/19 with about 3 gallons pH'd to 5.5 for consistency with rain. It also rained the day after. There is an explosion of pistols so she has been confirmed as a female. She was defoliated on 8/13/19 and has begun to develop her flowers. I have done some minor training to try to keep things under control but I waited a bit to long so it is largely ineffective.

I missed a week of updating but we are in week 4 of flower and coming along nicely. Plant was fed 8 cups of Jamaican guano via top feed on 9/5/19 and watered with 1.21 gallons of collected rain water pH'd to 5.5. Temps have started to drop at night so I have been covering at night with a frost blanket when it gets below 50. This has not stopped it from continuing to purple with the cooler temps at night.

Plants continue to only require the rainfall that has been provided up until this point with the most recent rainfall happening on 9/21/19. The smell is very intense on this plant with scents of lemon and diesel lending to the possibility of it truly being Secret Formula. Slight Yellowing begining on Larger fan leaves which is to be expected this late into flower. While examining the plant I found what I thought were either swollen calyxs or seeds and it turned out to be the later unfortunately. We will continue with what mother nature has to offer for likely at least the next 30 days.

So we were hit with about two weeks of very heavy rain which left the 2 plants next to her to suffer with bud rot. She has come through unfazed! The weather has improved and although I am having to cover at night because we have had a few night of low 40s, the days have been pretty exceptional growing conditions. My goal is to push her as long as possible which will be tricky as we are expecting a dip into the high 30s couple evenings. I am aiming for a harvest around Halloween (as long as trichs cooperate) but am prepared to harvest as soon as is needed if I find Botrytis. I am planning a wet trim and rack drying on the other 2 outdoor plants due to moisture issues but I believe she is resilient enough to have the slowest possible process. Unfortunately, she will have to be dissected into individual branches for drying due to her size. Not sure I have any possible way to dry her as a whole plant lol

Growing her turned out unlike any other plant I have grown. She was an after thought seed that was thrown in the backyard late summer. She flourished with very little help or care. Her size probably should have been a little better controlled but the goal was to see what mother nature could do on her own.

She was harvested on 10/14/19 which was a little sooner than I had anticipated. The growing conditions had started to become difficult with the night temps dropping into the 30's and a week of non stop rain was expected the week after harvest. She was a bitch to cut down and had to be broken into individual stalks for drying purposes. I had hoped for the slowest possible dry with her since she had been so resilient through out the grow and did not show any signs of bud rot like her garden companions. I did not dry her in the grow room where I normally would due to the fact there had been boytrytis in the garden and I worried about spores getting into future indoor grows. So, she was dried in the other half of the basement. This was probably not the best location due to the dehumidifier and furnace. Most branches ended up drying in around 4-5 days which actually was quite fast considering that all plant material was left on. A larg portion of her trim was done via a trimming machine due to the sheer quantity and size of the plant. The machine dows not do the job I would have wanted but I decided to leave it be for now since I noticed that the jar RH was dropping drastically after each hand trim. Because I could not process the quantity as quickly as was needed to hit the cure window, I have about half of the jars that missed the window and are curing at between 55 and 60. This has not affected a single thing in terms of smokabililty. I have enjoyed even the slowest of cure jars and the smoke is clean, smooth and has really great taste. I will continue to do some hand trimming on the pieces the machine didn't satisfy me once we are past week 4 of cure. Overall probably the most enjoyable smoke I have grown to date and also the most incredible plant I have grown in terms of size.

I've only ever seen one male and that is a pure Sativa I'm growing. That long straight pre-flower doesn't resemble either. I did have a couple females that I originally thought was male. They had something similar to that long skinny pre-flower but it was curved and on lower branches. The were pure indicas. The first pre-flower pic you showed, the look more like female calyxes. Keep an eye on those to see if the pistils come out of their tips.

@SortOfNovice, Thanks so much for the info. I am kind of feeling like if it were a male I would see some advancement at this point in the season since they have to grow their balls early to pollinate. As long as I don't start seeing some very clear ball action, I am going to just let it keep going and see what we get! I need to get the microscope out there and get a better look. Really appreciate the feedback and I wish you much luck on your grows!

Hi, Excuse me...I notice what appears to be calcium deficiency or excess magnesium in those pics. Of course, I can't be entirely sure but it REALLY does look like the balance is off. Good luck!
Ssomeguy
Ssomeguycommented6 years ago
@Jayann, Well if the PH is that high and you don't know the cause, something like urine even... About dolomite btw, it has a VERY high magnesium content relative to calcium and in general you want to keep the ratio of calcium to magnesium at around 7:1 so unless you definitely need a LOT of magnesium it's not something you should use TOO liberally. Calcitic lime more for calcium. But I mean, I take it you didn't use that much so it shouldn't be a problem. You might wanna keep that in mind though.
Ssomeguy
Ssomeguycommented6 years ago
@Jayann, Excellent, yeah guano would definitely keep that mix more neutral. Plant looks quite a bit more "normalized" now, very good looking plant. Keep it up!
Jayann
Jayanncommented6 years ago
@@Ssomeguy, I was just reading about the ways to lower the soil pH organically and it mentioned using products with nitrogen. Looks like I may have gotten pretty lucky in this case. I had also added a top feed of Mexican and Jamaican guanos at the same time and perhaps the ratio of everything was enough to make things right. Unfortunately I can not find my soil pH meter to confirm where things stand but things are definitely looking good!
