Grow Questions

Is it safe to run oscillating fans after sprinkling diatomaceous earth on the top while in seedling stage ? The stuff is so fine and light I think it could fly and cover the babies. They act as microscopic razor blades for fungus gnats - could these blades harm the babies as well

Hey there VikRik, this stuff could easily poison you and your plants. First off, it's silica, breathe in too much of that over time and you get hospitalized . Second Diatomaceous Earth is at minimum pH > 7 that means that over time you could end up with ph problem - so just keep that in mind. Usually this kind of thing is used outside, I make a thick circle with it around some plants and it keeps things like slugs and afids away. For fungus gnats indoors it could work, but it comes with baggage. The easiest thing to do to protect against fungus gnats is simply to not over water. Fugus gnats need that long period of humidity to reproduce and hatch, so if you follow a strict wet dry cycle you'll be able to manage it. If you have access to beneficial bacterial, just add them to the watering. Doing that even if you get an outbreak it wont be so bad, you're looking for bacilus subtilis, bacilus thurengensis and bacilus thurengensis and Mycorrzhia. Hope this helps ! 🚀

Should I defoliate these autos a little or leave it be?

Yes u can defoliate but do it over a week span. U don't want to strip them all at once. I strip 50% of what I want. Then 3 or 4 days later finish defoliate. And u only want to defoliate to expose bud sites. Plant still needs leaves to grow.

Hey there, hope i answered your question. For fungus gnats the best thing to do is avoid overwatering, never over water again by using the lifting bag method : www.youtube.com/watch Anything else you need just let me know 👊

@VikRik, yeah saw that growmie, keep an eye on it constantly for sure grab some humic acid too, it will regulate the ph in your soil hopefully enough

@CRiSPrGrow, highly appreciate your answer bud, unfortunately I already applied the DE by the time of asking. One of my auto mazars is showing what could be nute issues, gonna grab me some lithmus paper and check out the soil ph this evening.

Good test. Curious to see the results

@Wicked_Stix, its actually not a good test - they are not grown from clones so the genes are not identical :|

Hi @VikRik! I don't think so. However make sure your seedlings don't get stressed by too much wind, such young plants only need a slight continuous breeze, nothing more. Hope this will help, keep us updated and happy growing! 👊

@VikRik Hi mate I would definately remove some foliage see my answer above for more details
VikRik
VikRikcommented5 years ago
@DILLIGAF, thanks, exactly what Im worried about

DILLIGAFcommented5 years ago
@VikRik, the only defoliation I would recommend would be to let more air circulate I've been stressing my autos out way too much and it will effect the yield but now i know not to do it again 😅
VikRik
VikRikcommented5 years ago
@DILLIGAF, thanks mate ✊ I think I've got good air circulation as it stands, just want to direct the food it gets to the prime bud sites via defoliation, I just dont know how good an idea this is when it comes to autos

@VikRik, for #1 don't worry about it for #2 that does help and you have a few days left to do it : focus on the bottom 1 or 2 flower nodes but don't bother with the leafs. You got this growmie👊🏻
VikRik
VikRikcommented5 years ago
@CRiSPrGrow, I cant reply to your answer so will do so here 😊 Im looking to defoliate for 2 reasons 1) Higher up leaves are rubbing against each other and I may get white powdery mildew - I wonder if my earlier 2 neem sprays will help negate this or not. 2) Take out the really short stems right at the bottom as well as some lower bug sites so the higher up flowers get more food and grow nicely. But I really dont know if this is a good idea with autos or not. Thanks for the compliment 👊

Thanks @DankGardener , I did strip out some bottom growth and got a banana for it,so I plucked that out coz its waay to early in flower to think about breeding some fem autos. That said Im looking at some scrawny buds at the top and am wanting to trim more off coz I just cant see 1 or 2 plants packing decent flower power ... but its my first auto grow (pace still feels a little strange), so ...figuring it out
