BigDaddyK Ok I have decided that all the things I don’t like about the other hydro systems , I’m going to fix ( or try to )
1) 19 litre pots are too small , the water level can go down too quick you need at least 15-20 litre reservoir
2) little holes In top are pointless
3) air hose can get trapped by lid
4) emptying is always a ball ache
So the solution ?
Hopefully here it is
To start with I have got 35 litre REALLY USEFUL BOX £15 each - Tested to hold water with no problems , boxes are light proof , lids clamp down with handles ( actually black not yellow ) if anyone wants to point amazon answers this way , you will see what I mean 😜
The second boxes are 45 litre Wham Bam £12 each , these seem tougher , I had a slip whilst cutting , these were tested as above , lids are slightly different with clip handles, bit harder to open .
Both boxes will hold 20 litres of solution with an air gap to net pot
I bought a 127 mm hole cutter with the little attachment ( to go into drill ) from screwfix approx £15 for cutter and £9 for the attachment ( arbour ) you need to hold the cutter
I marked out the centre of the lid and cut the hole , I got a sharp knife and took off the burr around the edge , pot will sit flush
Take a 6mm drill and make two holes for the air supply ,one on each side , approx 4/5 of the way up under the handle , making sure this is above any water level you might have , I have added a grommet either side to stop the tube from moving
Buy two air stones , the flat ones are best , I have two 150 mm ( 6 inch ) round , flat air stones approx £7 each
I have also bought a drill pump , the attaches straight into a power drill , then you connect hose to each end and a few minutes later voila all gone !!!
Big thanks to Tim for that one
And always remember the BDK golden rule you can always put in ,but never take out in DWC
So far I am preferring the 35 litre Really Useful box

BigDaddyK Testing the drill pump , remember the hose always has water in it haha 😂
The reason I use 6 inch net pots , is because it’s easy to interchange between small and big pots , some people use the 10 inch net pots , it’s too hard to start in , I want to be as quick as possible , the more lst or defoliation you do will delay flowering
The really useful boxes have a little lip that you can drill LST anchor points , you can still remove lid without any issues, only drill through lid , DO NOT DRILL WITH LID IN PLACE , I used a 5mm drill bit
Drilled the lid on the Wham Bam boxes , and dropped two purple lemonade in
have also cut the locking part of the lid off , it’s a ball ache to open otherwise 😜
RESULT - the really useful boxes are amazing , the other ones are ok , but these 35litre are the best
BigDaddyK In the other ones too
The wham boxes take 20 l of reservoir easily , the really useful 17 l
PLEASE NOTE THIS DIARY IS ABOUT THE DWC POTS , BOTH THE PLANTS GROWING ARE ON SEPERATE DIARIES NERE ON GROWDIARIES , ONE IS PURPLE LEMONADE THE OTHER FAST BUDS TESTER 11

BigDaddyK Quick update on the boxes I think this is the middle of week 7 - I had a few issues with the purple lemonades , nutrient related but also as I didn’t notice the water going down , I much prefer the 35 litre Really Useful boxes as th3 root structure is much better , the squarer shape is more suited imo. These are two reliable cheap probes I use . Blue ph pen was from Amazon and the HM2 digital EC was from eBay
There is a separate Purple Lemonade diary and a Northern lights diary that’s updated daily if you want to see the progress , and my battle with the nutrients 😜
BigDaddyK The 8 pot system had issues with root rot , I think it was becaause I forgot to change solution

BigDaddyK This is my pro led setup , 4 x quantum boards , 6 x 150 watt cobs = total power draw 782W from socket , gives 30,000 lux at 5 feet away , as bright as sunlight and mor3

BigDaddyK Okay so this is my new project 19 L really useful boxes with the XL lid
Made a clasp by bending a picture hook and bolting on with spacers , you could also use them as anchor points
Put in air hole under handle with 5.5 drill bit , might need a bit of extra drilling just around a bit if you get my drift on hole size
Good to see someone else has found my secret pots!
I run the 92 L ones.
Could talk for hours about this.
Built my own system like this a year ago and never looked back. Now have a fully recirculating deep water system. Watch the total system volume as this can be pricey with nutrients.
Also the wham pots are great but I tape the lids on as they never fully seal allowing pests in . Good luck and I’m going to be watching this one. 👍👍👽👽
@BigDaddyK, in my DWC, I only use 2" net pots and rockwool, no thrips.. cost effective too... Cheers
Also, using a single quality air stone should be fine, this reduces Rez temps, as well add extra air line to the run to give the compressed air more time to cool before entering the rezivoir.. keep it Green! DWCHC
iam following, i have big respect of DIY.... and most times its the only solution to get the stuff working
and a question. they wrote on the box,,, give us a shout what do you use your.... did you=?
really cool diary man! I will follow with interest
"2) little holes In top are pointless"
Which do you mean here?
Also I know it is not so hot depending on where your reservoir is. but do you use water chiller in warmer seasons? (Against pythium)
Cool hose drill =) never seen that before
@BigDaddyK, if your temp ever does get out of hand (ours did when we maxed out our lights) it was super easy to DIY a chiller with a pump, garden hose, and mini fridge. Check out my FBT01 setup week 1 if you're interested. Holes through bottom of fridge door for the hose, which is coiled in the mini fridge freezer section. Find a pump rate that keeps your reservoir at the temp you want :). Our air temp fluctuates about 20 C to 30 C depending on the light schedule, and water is always 18 C to 19 C. Looked into thermoelectric chiller options but the beer fridge was so much cheaper.
I had this issue too before. my auto dwc, half way through flowering, , it stopped absorbing nutrients and it slowly dried itself out and died. Can you tell me what the cause was? I do remember it absorbed all the nutrients and the roots were dry for about a day before adding water. did i shock my plant? thanks bro.
@MaryJaneUSA,do you have any pics? there are a number of reasons, the damage on these are caused by thrips, i ve tried some neem oil that does control them, but the fkers are back, so until Mammoth send me some bio ( please ) im trying predatory mites... if you have a look at my Purple Lemonade diary you might see something similar...that was too much Calcium.
This looks similar to the first build I did, the OG Kush, however even better is a shallow water culture, I did a DIY tutorial but I prefer the reservoir not be under the pot. The Nutrifield pro pots is what I use now with my own plumbing, just a simple ring and an 8W pump, no airstone needed, no cal/mag needed either.
Nice one on the diy build, I used one like this for many years and have never had explosive growth quite like it, I run my water level just touching the bottom of the net pot, try keep as much solution in them as possible. its far easier to maintain levels ph ppm and most importantly solution temp .
@puddlejump,hi you need to keep a gap of at least 2 inches between net pot and reservoir ,in fact a bigger gap means more air , these are performing well so far 👍
The reason I made these i# so I can have 20 litre reservoir not 10
happy growing
You dont need a gap of at least 2 inches and it doesn't mean more air, the air stones do the job, in my opinion the more of a air gap there more of a risk of the exposed root developing problems, essentially it is creating 2 environments for your roots to live in. That being said it is a DIY build and it is whatever works for you, Hope all goes well Ill keep following, gl
