Now I wish I set up affiliate links ;) the main thing I want to do is promote as local industry as possible. I'm pretty poor and am just waiting around on a working visa so I had to cheap out in some areas however it is very apparent in quality. My Oscillating fan no longer oscillates and is a potential fire hazard, my inline fans and carbon filters don't fit together snug, my cheap pH pen can't be calibrated low enough (Hanna or BlueLabs next?) and my tent leaks light pretty poorly. My lights and drivers function fantastically, I am super impressed with the quality of these products and will be buying more from these manufacturers! HLG need to join Growdiaries!!
Now we can get onto this week's real info!
I am growing in coco coir, 10-15% perlite and that is amended with 4TBSP/gallon with Gaia Green Organic amendments. Since this will be supporting vegetive growth the ratio is 75:25 of 4-4-4 to 2:8:4. I also through in some bat poop for root growth, thanks Gaia Green (also need to join this wonderful site)!
Because this grow acts more like a soil grow the pH requirement is different than a typical Coco coir with bottle nute grow. We are trying to promote microbial growth so it is essential to keep the pH between 6.5-6.8. Cycling between this range will allow the root system to bring the required nutrients into the plant while being neutral enough to promote the microbes we want.
It is essential to allow the medium to properly dry between watering as this allows the roots to breath in the oxygen they require. If you over water your plants you can drown them, if you water too often the medium is given the perfect dark warm and damp conditions for anarobic bacteria to thrive and potentially kill plants by damping off or root rot.
It's best to keep the humidity above 65% for the first week of seedlings (even higher if possible and if airflow allows, take care of mold) and to slowly decrease to 55% for the rest of veg. Humidity is often reduced to 45% for flower to avoid bud rot. I have an autoflower approaching full flower in the same tent and am keeping it at 50% with the use of different zones in the tent, this is why I don't have the humidity higher.
She came up to the surface very quickly! I saw that the cotyledon leafs were yellow and assumed that it was from extended contact with the amended medium so I tried lightly brushing the dirt away from underneath the leaves but my depth perception failed me and I touched the leaves with too much force by mistake. I tore one of the cotyledon leaves but at least she's a photoperiod and has time to recover from stresses and luckily there were already nubs of the new leaves coming in!
Oddly enough on day 3 I noticed that the damaged leaf is green and growing and the untouched one is yellowing off. Either way I'm confident the good environment will continue to carry it to the true vegetive stage.
Day 4 she got about a shot glass of water.
I'm so excited to see how these genetics grow, the description of their heritage and breeding procedure found on spliff seeds website sounds amazing. As long as I don't run out of room in my tent I should have a great harvest, especially since I can take my time with her and train her to spread out and bathe in the glorious light supplied by HLG Canada.

Cheezy I have learned so much valuable information about VPD and how it effects plant growth and nutrient uptake via transpiration. It turns out that my previous grows had too low humidity in relation to air and leaf temperature (my leaves were hot from lights being too close for their intensity (anyone want to send me a PAR sensor?😅)), my lead VPD was well over 1.8 and even over 2 in some areas of my tent.
I set up a divider in the middle of my tent to trap humidity on the veg side of my operations (there's an autoflower trying to flower on the other side) and raised my lights. I also set up an inline fan to push air in to the tent from inside our house to increase CO2 and raise lights off temp.
I have gotten the environment to a constant 73-81°f @ 50-60rh with a leaf temperature offset of -3°f (cooler near seedlings). I adjust light height to alter leaf temperature to keep it as close to 0.8 LVPD as possible. Doing this ensures that the leaf pressure enables the plant to uptake water from the root system at a healthy rate, with that water comes the nutrients required.
The next part of my operations I need to fix is my medium. I've based my grow on somebody else's methods without understanding how the plant or medium actually work. I am growing in coco coir and perlite with organic dry amendments, I am primarily missing humus. Humus is broken down organic matter, this is where all the microbes come from in our organic grows. I also need to find a source of Fine Dolomite Lime to add both calcium and magnesium into my medium, this will also help buffer PH between 6.2-7. I also want to get some Gaia Green Greensand for potassium and some Alfa Alfa meal for teas.
Oh yeah I've added Epsom salts and un-sulphured blackstrap molasses into every 2nd watering.
@Master_weeda, Hello!! 😆 I'm super excited about these genetics, even more so with your feedback!! The force will surely be with me if you are following along with this grow! Cheers mate! 🤙🤙
@ThrashedTV_BakedByGlaze, perfect plan mate! Ahaha I got sick of stressing and stunting my autos so I'm saving the last of my seeds until I master my environment :P The Moonwalker kush genetics should be SUPER stable from what I've read about spliff seeds breeding programme so is a good starting place for us with their amazing genetics :D
