Well, I've gotten two out of my three seeds to germinate, and I have put those into pint filled with plain old Sta-Green potting soil from Lowes. I know if doesn't have a great rep around here, but this will be my second round of growing from seed. So far, this soil hasn't given me any troubles and the first round of plants have thrived in it, despite not really getting many positive mentions on the sites I've read. This will be my second time growing the strain. The first plant that I grew ended up being a great height for my basement grow area. This Grower's Choice strain has seems to be an easy grow for those just getting started with cannabis.
Now that they've popped up, I moved them into a cupboard with some Feit Electric LED grow bulbs, just to get them started. One thing that will stay the same, throughout the grow is that I won't really be using any items that are really specific for cannabis growth, as far as nutrients, etc go. Everything will be stuff that you can get your local big box store's garden section. You'll even notice that I'm just using containers left over from last summer's outside gardening season.
Well, the third seed never germinated, but these two are going in my seedling space. I injured one of them, leading it to be stunted. After some patience, it is now leafing out and will hopefully catch up to the other one. I've seen how these can bounce back, and there's a good chance I won't be able to tell which is which, by the time stretch is done. Like I said, this is my second round of seeds, so folks should expect some mistakes on my part. Otherwise, I'm just giving them a little water, every morning.
Not a lot to report, here. The one that had a rough start has begun growing at a regular rate and is leafing out, properly. It is still smaller than the other one, but it seems like we're over the hump and that it is back to growing at a regular development rate.
The tall one was definitely getting to the main vegetation phase, so I decided to move them down to the main growing area. I am trying putting two in a large Sterilite tote, which I will then LST away from each other. The goal being that they fill out the tub. The first one of these that I grew is long and lanky. Plenty of space for light to get all the way down the plant. As long as these two grow similarly they shouldn't crowd out light for the other. My understanding is that this strain is highly uniform. Hopefully that is right and these two don't need much defoliation. Nothing special on the dirt. Just Sta-Green potting mix from Lowes.
Well, we're into week 5 (from seed) and things are chugging along. The plant that didn't get stunted has continued to grow and I went ahead and tied it down to start the process of letting other colas catch up. I don't have any kind of fancy LST technique, but I find just a little bending can create a more even canopy, without a ton of work. The stunted one is still growing, but I don't know what it's gonna do. It appeared to be back totally on track, but the last new section was irregular. This happened to one of the plants in my first grow. It ended up sorta self-topping and splitting into two main colas. Never caught up in size, but it went through flowering and gave me some decent buds, though way less than a normal plant. We'll see where it goes!
Not much to report, other than that LST has helped both of the plants. As you can see, I train them to grow towards the outside, when I use the 18 gallon tubs. With proper training, the plants will fill out the tub and grow outwards for inches beyond the edge.
They are both just putting on size. The stunted one is still smaller, but it is growing at the same rate as the non-stunted one, now. My guess is that I've got a week before they kick into the flowering stretch, at least judging by the last HK I grew.
Update: After a couple of more days, they both seem to be starting their stretch. It's real early, but they are definitely growing at a faster clip. 😊
Alrighty, they certainly are into their stretch period. After spending most of it's life small, the stunted one is now over 90% of the other one's size. I also did some more LSTing to the smaller one. The two plants are starting to fill out the tub, which is my goal. It's kinda like a "tub of green" strategy of creating a flat canopy with the two plants. Gave them some of the Cultivation Nation Veg powder, which I just got. Also I give my plants epsom salts, periodically.
The flowering stretch has been booming. Both plants are now roughly the same size and seem to only be a day or two apart on when each step of development starts. I did a little light defoliation, just to expose some lower branches that I wanted to encourage filling in space in the tub. Probably only pinched off half a dozen leaves, between both plants. This is a great example of why you should stick with plants, as the once-stunted plant is thriving and now looks to produce similar amounts to the one that had the healthier start. Also, I do this Miracle Grow flower food as a bridge to better flower nutrients, but I like to give it some N through the stretch. 😃
As you can see, the tub is now pretty uniformly filled out, which is what I was trying to get the two plant to do, via LST. Part of this strategy is clearing the larger fan leaves, in order to get light down into the plant. If these two end up like my previous Hindu Kush plant, the branches will be stretching for a couple more weeks. For an indica, these seem fairly lanky.
They are both going strong. For some reason, the one that was originally stunted is a bit ahead in flowering schedule. They seem to be coming towards the end of the stretch. I also took some of the bigger fan leaves off them, just to promote air and light penetrating below the top level.
Both are coming along, well. I've moved the tub into the main area of my grow space, which is where they can finish closer to the fan. Once they start flowering, I always want to make sure they have enough air movement.
These two have really been looking healthy and happy. The one that was originally stunted is a little smaller, and it has gone into full-on flower mode. I think that one's buds will start to fatten in the next week. The one that didn't get stunted is doing a final bit of stretching and going into the main flowering portion. It's gonna be very similar in size and structure, compared to the Hindu Kush Auot that I've previously grown. I'm smoking that one, right now. What a great strain. Starting to look forward to these two coming into harvest. Probably a month on the stunted one, with a few more weeks for the long and leggy one.
I took more pics, this week. We're starting to get to the pay off portion of the grow. The one that was stunted is gonna have five large colas. The other one will have some large colas, but also a ton of other buds. For whatever reason, the plant that is a bit behind produced a bunch of side branches that have made it to the light and are gonna make some nice little nugs, knowing this strain.
These two are both doing great. The one that was stunted is further along in flowering and is atypical for the strain. It is producing terpenes with definite blueberry smells, and that isn't the norm. The other one looks like a textbook Hindu Kush plant. It's a really great looking plant that will produce a lot of good bud, seeing the size and density of even smaller bud sites.
The one that was stunted is almost to harvest. It's a blueberry, judging by the smell. The Hindu Kush plant is doing excellent and coming around the bend toward home.
The one that looks like a typical Hindu Kush plant is still just packing on bud weight and maturing. The Blueberry one had gotten to the end of its road. I only got about 1.2 oz from the Blueberry, but it is easily the stickiest weed that I've ever grown. Lots and lots of resin just made the whole thing tacky to the touch.
