Week 1of veg, I transplanted my seedling into its final home (7 gallon smart pot). I did a 1:1:1 ratio of Fox Farm Ocean Forest, Happy Frog & perlite. I watered the soil in the pot 36 hours before transplant.

Week 3 saw great growth. New foliage seems to be appearing everyday. The plant has about 6 nodes now, so I decided to go ahead and top the plant down to the 3rd node.

Since topping her last week, I’ve seen not only the 2 main colas grow, but the growth tips from the 1st and 2nd nodes are also growing! Topping hasn’t created any stress because the plant was healthy and big enough to compensate.

This week was a busy week. I got a little overzealous and impatient by feeding her nutes way too early. Got high and forgot she’s in a 7 gal pot and not the 3 gal I used for my previous grow lol. Downward curling leaf tips and dark leaf color indicate Nitrogen toxicity. Won’t be feeding nutes for a while as a result. Started some LST as well. Don’t laugh at my ghetto SCROG net!

Continued to LST. This is the best job I’ve done keeping the canopy as level as I am. This lady LOVES it! New growth tips are growing and will reach the top canopy in no time. The N toxicity was bothering me considering it was my fault, so I gave her a light flush with just normal pH water at 6.5. She bounced back and I’ll continue monitoring. Also, made a DIY SCROG net and upgraded my Digilux 400w MH to a 600w Ushio Opti Blue MH.

This week has been eventful to say the least. Noticed some yellowing on some lower/mid leaves around the veins. I was surprised because I monitor the ingoing pH of my feeding nutrients and regular water. I did a soil test (slurry method) and realized the pH of my soil was 5.5 and magnesium/calcium probably being locked out. I added some dolomite lime about 2-3 inches below my soil, put the soil back and top dressed a little bit more. Gave her a good watering with a ph of 7.5 which adjusted my runoff to 6.5. Every watering from here on out will be at 7.0-7.5 until I see my soil/runoff pH stabilized. New growth shows no signs of deficiency and growth has sped up drastically. Glad I caught it a when I did...a luxury of one plant getting all of my attention!

This week, I fed only pH water at 6.5 but it appears the lockout has gotten worse. I’m going to invest in a TDS meter because the only variable I haven’t checked has been the strength my nutes have been during feedings. Probably not the best decision to bypass the TDS after switching to a new nutrient 3 part but you live and you learn! Pruned off the lower sucker shoots stealing precious energy. I clipped one off per day over the week.

Pulled out all the stops this week. Received my TDS meter and calibrated. Decided to mix a batch of nutrients at the level I’ve used the past 2 weeks to see what ppm I’ve been feeding at. Running at 3/4 strength with no additional additives, my ppm INCOMING was 2300+. It most likely higher than that because this “test” batch was made with distilled water at 0 ppm instead of the tap I usually use. So I flushed, flushed and flushed. Took her to the bathroom and ran 21 gallons of distilled water with 1/8 strength nutes, mild doses of cal-mag and epsom salt. Replacing the bad with the good. Last gallon I fed at 1/2 strength and added some SUPERthrive at around 850 ppm to help with the stress. Trimmed most of the under growth off beneath the shaded area and also pruned middle fans in the middle. I raised my light a good 6 inches so she can recover and left her alone for 48 hours. She’s doing much better as of last night.

Easy going week. New growth is nice and green. Did a light pruning in the middle and bottom. Snipped 2 small growth tips that wouldn’t get the light they would need to produce. Flipping to 12/12 in a few days!

Week 1 of flowering in the books. Didn’t see too much stretch, thanks to the metal halide (I believe). Got some tight internode spacing, so hopefully I’ll get some good sized colas by harvest. I have a few unruly colas towering over the canopy, so I’ll train those this upcoming week as vertical space is becoming a premium. Side effect of vegging for 9 weeks. She’s a mammoth of a plant!!!

Week 2: Supercropped the branches that we’re the tallest. Got the canopy pretty even by the end of this week. Watered at half strength nutes and 5 days later, plain water with a tsp of calmg. Getting a lot of bud sight development. Smell has kicked up some notches for sure! She’s going to be funky. Can definitely tell the difference between the 400w I ran last grow vs. this Ushio 600w with nice, tight node spacing. Powering through the stretch til day 21. She’ll get her last trim/pruning next week.

Active week. Supercropped the other branches that I didn’t do last week. Seeing more and more flowers developing which is exciting. Pruned some foliage beneath & in the middle of the plant, allowing for better air flow. Switched to the 600w HPS. Changed feeding schedule to feed, feed, water since she’s a heavy feeder. I anticipate having to prop up these colas once they put on the weight because she’s HUGE!!! 😎

Week 4 saw abundant flower growth. There’s a noticeable difference in the size of each bud site compared to last week. Another thing I noticed is that the buds on the branches that were supercropped seem to be fuller and thicker! Started to see increased trichome production on both the sugar and fan leaves. Most growers are against stressing their plants in flower but I believe it depends on the strain you’re growing and how she was prepared in veg. I’m thoroughly impressed with the amount of resiliency she’s shown up to this point. I haven’t seen any indication that the high stress that I’ve put her through towards the end of veg and the beginning of flowering has cost me anything besides an additional week of flower.

Week 5 saw more bud growth I need terms of size, not the amount of sites. Noticed some leaves yellowing towards the bottom, moving upwards. Added additional bloom nutrients. Colas were leaning over badly so I staked some with bamboo. It appears to have helped. She’s supposed to be a 9-10 week strain but I anticipate she’ll run a couple weeks past that.

This was my first time growing Humboldt seeds and I’m quite impressed! One thing I noticed (a little too late actually) is that my pheno was a Nitrogen hog in veg. Unfortunately, I didn’t read her well enough and underfed N. It caused her leaves to yellow prematurely in flowering, impacting my yields as a result. Despite my error, she still produced top quality bud.

I really enjoyed my time growing this strain. She took everything I could throw at her like a champ. The pheno I got is definitely more on the sativa side with a citrus, earthy type smell. Overall, it was a good experience growing this strain and what oil do grow it again.

I'm not sure how I missed the start of this grow but I'm all caught up now and things are looking great Yes you do look to have a slight deficiency going on which is more than likely nutrient lock out. You have started to do the right thing by doing the plane water flushes to raise your ph back to normal/acceptable levels As said the plants will most definitely benefit from a defoliation. This will do 2 things 1- more light will be able to penetrate deeper into the canopy. Which in turn will be directed to the potential budsites 2- the energy from the removed leaves will be directed into the remaining plant. More energy= better growth Just go in easy and take a few of those larger shade leaves that are blocking light. Now I'm all caught up I'll be along for the ride and watching with interest mate So far you are doing a fine job a d thank you for documenting your HSO endeavour on the grow diary platform!

@Humboldt_Seed_Organisation, Thank you for the very helpful tips. Your advice is invaluable and unexpected as I didn't think the breeder would comment on my journal. Since you're here, how much of a stretch can I expect when I flip to flower?

juicepro
juiceprocommentedweek 67 years ago
Bro, my 2 cents is that’s not a mag deficiency and you don’t need to worry about ph so much. I would raise your light though, 18” is too close and that will cause the leaf bleaching I see.
juicepro
juiceprocommented7 years ago
@greenleafcultivators, your right mag is a mobile element but it shows itself in a very specific way. First the top of the petiole turns purple then the bottom followed by purple stems.
greenleafcultivators
greenleafcultivatorscommented7 years ago
@juicepro, Thanks for the advice brotha! I've had the light at 18" for 3 light cycles and they've been praying to it ever since. Canopy isn't hot either. Where do you see the bleaching? Correct me if I'm wrong juice, but magnesium is a mobile nutrient; which would explain why the affected leaves are some of the oldest leaves she's got. I'm here to become a better grower and I appreciate your opinions!

i thinks Nitrogen Deficiency Problem: A cannabis nitrogen deficiency will cause the older, lower leaves on your plant to turn yellow, wilt away and eventually die. The yellow leaves of a nitrogen deficiency may show signs of brown, and they will usually become soft and sort of "fold" in, before possibly turning crispy but ultimately falling off on their own.

@Tonino, thanks for stopping by. Would the veins still remain green? I know both N and Mg can have similar symptoms which was why I was confused the past couple weeks.
