I have been so excited to start this strain! I am fascinated by landrace strains. This strain from Spliff comes in two varieties, one is this photo and the other is an automatic variety. While I enjoy the simplicity of autos I really like the ability to manipulate the size and flowering regimen with photos.
This strain is half original Chitrali landrace direct from Pakistan to the breeder. They then crossed these genetics with Skunk 1 to stabilize the strain. There were two phenos from this cross. One is more indica and the other leaning towards the Sativa side. They promise no raciness or paranoia from the strain. They promise massive resin production with a slightly longer flowering time than most indica based strains coming in at 8-9 weeks. I am sure the Sativa Pheno will go a tad longer.
I have done extensive research into the SCROG method for this strain, which spliff says is highly compatible. This will be my first try at the method, but it seems to be logical considering height restraints of tents and the general compact nature of the hobby. Once she is ready to be transplanted, she will be going in a five gallon cloth pot with organic soil and top dressed nutes from Dr. Earth, with the addition of fish emulsion and, when in flower, Epsom salts.
I can’t wait to smell her flowers and watch her grow! I also look forward to seeing the benefits of the SCROG method in person! Stay tuned :-)
One very big caution on Spliff Seeds genetics, they grow amazingly fast. I started this gal in a party cup last week. As you can see by the small blotches on some of her leaves, she went through a little nute deficiency. She is rebounding excellently though, now that I have her in her new one gallon ice cream container with fresh organic soil. Many holes drilled in the bottom. Not my ideal choice for a container, but since the whole plague thing is happening, we all have to use a little ingenuity. I can’t imagine she will be in this tent for more than two weeks max. She will be in her final cloth pot soon enough.
I am using a new Mycorrhizae inoculate called Recharge (in the pics). It seems to work very well after the roots have been infected. It also contains Kelp meal and powdered molasses to feed the spores. It’s not cheap, but the dose is one teaspoon per gallon. I actually have just sprinkled some on the soil before watering in, since the plant is small and an entire gallon of water isn’t really ideal and would spoil between waterings.
It is refreshing to see the fat indica leaves that are growing. My last two were on the Sativa side, @spliffseeds Jack F1 and @spliffseeds Amnesiac, which have proven to be excellent flowers, but I am looking forward to a more medicated experience with these once they are harvested and cured.
I will say it again, once Spliff’s genetics take hold, the growth rate is almost frightening to watch. Think “Little Shop Of Horrors.” This strain doubled in size daily in the early stages. She has slowed down some now, and is focusing on new leaves and I am sure the lower branches will be protruding soon. I am going to grab some cuttings from those once she is in her final cloth 5 gallon pot. I don’t want to risk losing these landrace genetics!
I have my SCROG screen just waiting in the wings. I am really excited to try this technique. I will probably top her at 5 nodes, this is the most common method that I have seen in my research. I also ordered a second light that should be here next week. It’s the same as the one I have now in the flowering tent, an Amazon Aponuo. The first has proven itself as a good all purpose light, and they can be daisy chained, so I won’t have to worry about additional timers or power plugs.
See you all next week! :-)
As I said last week, the ice cream pail didn’t last that long. Even though I was watering sparingly, the effects of overwatering can be clearly seen in the older leaves. It was already there when I was in the party cups, but really became prevalent in the pail. I had the entire bottom full of drill holes but the plastic sides still contained too much moisture. I am thinking about buying smaller cloth pots for all stages of growth. I don’t know what I ever did without them. At this point, if another plague comes around, I will probably tie up an old shirt to use in a pinch. They really are that good at aeration. The new growth from the bottom branches looks fantastic though, so I am not concerned.
I’ve given up on trying to list what nutes I am using. All are organic, and none are listed on this platform. I just applied a top dressing of Dr. Earth Premium Gold all purpose organic fertilizer. This is a solid ground up mixture of various organic materials that needs to be broke down over time. I also added molasses, more Recharge michorreaza inoculant, and also a light feed of Dr. Earth organic Nitro Big liquid. Nitro Big is a 3-0-1 fert that has been pre-digested to allow instant feeding.
She is still growing amazingly fast. Those bottom branches in the side view pic were barely nubs two nights ago. Here we can clearly see they are catching up with the rest, and probably will center with the top for a while after I top her. Topping should happen before next week’s post as rapidly as she is growing. She is also in the final tent, where the SCROG will happen. I haven’t installed the second light yet, as there really is no need at this point.
One interesting note, I took off the bottom two first true leaves when I transplanted, as they would have been either buried in or touching the soil, offering a pathway for fungus and other disease. After planted and watered in, I kept smelling a citrus aroma. It was coming from my fingers from pinching them off. This plant should produce some astoundingly pungent flowers.
See you all next week!
Hopefully everyone is happy and healthy this week. Speaking of healthy and happy, this girl certainly is both of those. She is setting up beautifully for SCROG from what I have researched. The screen will be put in place on Monday. Today is Saturday. Side note, I cloned the top I cut and it is going awesome.
She has not been watered or fertilized since last week. The pot is still “water heavy” when moved. I hate fungus gnats so I am not going to encourage them. She is growing rapidly and better every day. Note the lack of burn marks on the newer growth. I also hate overwatering mistakes like those so I am really throttling back. I get nervous in the stage after transplant and waiting for the roots to develop and grow out. The “experts” say they are weeds and will thrive if given the minimum of proper care. I agree with this, but the end result is subpar, to say the least.
I did not receive the same light from Amazon that I thought I was. It was my fault. I originally was worried that the new lamp would not be able to be daisy chained. I have (obviously) found this not to be the case. Everything is working absolutely perfect. I believe I touched on this last week. I have been redeemed in the fact that the chaining on the other lamp is quite adequate.
As I said earlier in this diary, I have only research and other people’s opinions to go with this week’s addition of the SCROG screen. I feel I have enough knowledge to carry this project through to completion, but we cannabis growers are all too familiar with the internal doubt that we engage before trying new tech. We shall see. I don’t expect any huge screen progress next week, they still seem too short to be tucking at this point.
Again, no new nutes or even water. I will probably try some watering Monday with some fish emulsion and maybe some of the liquid organic nitrogen fertilizer from Dr. Earth. Just trying to take it slow. Maybe some molasses as well, just to give the soil microbes some food. It truly is all about feeding the soil With organics. I also harbor some apprehension about watering and feeding once the screen is in place. I will adapt. I recently spoon-fed my dog before bringing her to the vet to be diagnosed with Lyme disease, so a plant probably won’t be that big of a sweat... Again, we shall see.
Until next week, cheers!
Yikes! I am so sorry this update has taken so long. Last week was crazy. It’s finally warming up here in the northern hemisphere so we have lawn work and vegetable gardens to attend to. Everything is finally catching up, so I will be more on track.
My SCROG screen looks more like a SCROG spider web. I am thinking I need to invest in a screen with smaller holes. This one was advertised as what I needed from Vivosun, the same people that made my tent. I am now thinking this is supposed to be more of a support for the large flower spikes, hence the bigger holes. I am using what I have for the time being though.
Since it is my first time, I contacted the very helpful folks at Spliff Seeds and they recommended I wait two more weeks before initiating flowering. Tucking has been going well, but some of the branches are starting to stiffen up. I am being more careful with those. Also, the picture options for a SCROG are limited, I am learning. You can’t really get many angles from a plant that you can’t move.
In the end, it’s all about the flowers anyways I guess. Cannabis is like orchids. They basically all look the same until the flowers appear.
I finally got to stop using the small heater that worked so well during the winter. That was a sigh of relief. It works good but dries the air considerably. One frustrating thing about the lights is the one in the front won’t hang straight so it is a little lopsided. Normally I thread the cords that they hang by together to make them stay straight but these aren’t long enough to do that with. I will have to manipulate them once flowering is underway.
This week I have been just watering with clean water and no fertilizer. I suppose, if after next week, I will be initiating flowering I will have to start adding some granular organic flowering fertilizer to the mix so I can get that to start breaking down in time for the buds. I will start this at the end of this week or the start of next.
See you all next week, on time! Ha Ha
Happy Sunday friends! Since I was so far out last week, I will probably just keep doing my updates on the last day of the week from here on out.
This week went well, I just kept using only water. I did hit her with Mycorrhiza one time though. The plant is clearly still burning at the tips. I am assuming now that my soil must be hot. I have been under the assumption, until now, that hot soil was mainly an issue for younger plants. This does not appear to be true to me anymore. I’m unsure what is going on. I used an organic soil from Home Depot, as shown in the pics. This is a local brand, and I have never used it before. Sadly, nobody carries Dr. Earth soil in my area anymore. That soil was flawless. I miss it. It isn’t a dire situation thankfully, the burns are not spreading.
One other possibility is the Pheno. Spliff has said there are two, one mainly indica and the other leaning on the Sativa side. I know Sativa strains aren’t keen on heavy nutes, so maybe my previous feedings have hit her pretty hard if she is indeed on the Sativa spectrum. The leaves are also very green, leading me to believe that it is a nitrogen overdose. All this said, you will think I am a complete idiot when I tell you I dug in a some flowering organic top amendment in today. This is because I decided to flip to 12/12 last night. I figure she has well enough nitrogen and the amendment needs to be broke down by the fungus and microbes so the sooner the better. This product is also in the pics. Normally I would start to adjust to flowering nutes over time and leave the nitrogen for building bud sites and assist the stretch, but clearly she has enough N already.
I need to invest in a screen with smaller squares for my next girl. If anyone has any brand suggestions I would love them. Please post in the comments. This is my first SCROG and I just grabbed this screen from Vivosun on Amazon. I now know that smaller squares would be of great benefit. I will keep this screen to support the flowers as they grow however. I can’t seem to find something to buy, many people just make their own. Maybe I should just buy a soccer net and some “S-Hooks?”
If you all have been following, I removed the bottom half of the leaves and shoots a couple weeks ago. I will be totally honest, had way too many beers last night and could not be on my knees contorting myself today to remove the top most parts under the screen. I will be doing this tomorrow though. After the hangover is slept off... Uff. Stressful times kick me into heavy drinking mode. The US is absolutely fucking insane shit show right now.
See you all next week!
Welcome to week six! I am shocked. I have never grown a SCROG before. What I have seen with my own two eyes is amazing. Spliff Seeds is the genetics bomb!
No added nutrients since last week’s top amendment. Temps at 74 F and 42% Humidity.
Note pics. Some flowers are thick and then I see a few others sprouting up and just flowering on the tip. I posted a pic of “The Bare-Spot”. Two little shoots coming up. It’s interesting and I will keep my eye on it.
On 12/12 since June eighth. 6/8
Trying new post format. I hate long recipe stories and switched to twitter, which is probably why. I feel short, to the point is the best medium.
Thoughts?
See you all next week!
This week was amazing. Watching these flowering stems stretch and imagining how it will look like at finish was really satisfying.
Only feed this week was recharge (weak dose) and Epsom salts.
I did get another double flower. My Spliff Seeds Jack F1 did this. I am back on over grow dot com (I was on the first one and then it got shut down YEARS AGO😕) and I am seeing other people seeing the same things in other strains. Not related to Spliff. Should we be concerned?😬. Pollution in potting soil??😱. Honestly, it’s probably always been there and those of us that only grow one or two notice more...
The new growth is lime green and very healthy. The terps are getting more prevelant as well. Lemon/Citrus.
I will never go back to regular plants again. SCROG takes an extra five minutes while you are in veg a day. Now that I am flowering, there is literally no work other than watering. Thank you organics! Knock on wood!
See you all next week! Hoping for some frost, but realistically probably two or three weeks more...
I am glad I am working with stable genetics from Spliff. I am sure other SCROG’s will be like this, but at least they stress test to know they won’t hermie unless really stressede
Once again, a little late! It's been another crazy week.
This week was still only fed just plain water. I have actually switched to dehumidifier water since both of ours are running constantly. It is very hot in my part of the world. Luckily, this plant is in my garage and has a cooler environment. My poor veg tent doesn't have this luxury. After this week, we are supposed to get some sort of break. I will be starting some new seed at this time. This is just not a healthy time to be stating any seeds, particularly of the Indica variety.
The colas are finally starting to bulk a little. As expected, not frosting at this time. I would love to say maybe next week, but I am thinking there will be nothing until the week after.
I was a little shocked that I was called out on another forum that my SCROG was supposedly not a "real scrog." This individual went on to say that I needed to tie down my branches on the screen as they grew. I was really surprised as I have never heard to do that. In fact, I have read many posts saying not to do that if you want to keep your screen. I just tucked. As I showed you all in earlier weeks. I responded to this and was told that I should have kept tucking more into flower. The cola shoots were getting quite rigid, so I don't see how that would have been an option without snapping branches. To each their own I guess. I did buy another trellis from a garden center, just in case the colas begin to collapse under their own weight late in flower ripening. We will see when that time comes.
Other than that, a pretty boring, yet ideal, week. All branches are ripening well. I am starting to think that I will have to do a selective harvest. This is probably normal with the SCROG style. Some of the smaller flowers are getting blocked from the light. I have read this is normal and with leaf fade, they will be getting their light eventually. I don't feel comfortable defoliating this late in the game. Any suggestions?
I will be back next week! God willing!
The heatwave in my area is finally breaking. Luckily the area she is in is naturally cooler than the other areas of my house. The other tent has been a sad situation...
I did finally, after over a month, add some flowering top dressing from Dr. Earth to her a few days ago. I am thinking this is probably all she is going to need up to finish. We will see as she progresses. I will be adding Recharge, probably in the next watering. Recharge isn't fertilizer though, it is a microbe and spore inoculant with a little kelp and powdered molasses to feed the microbes.
It is becoming increasingly obvious that this plant (probably because of the SCROG technique) is going to need a selective harvest once those buds do decide to get ripe. There are so many lower bud sites closer to the screen being shaded. It is going to look strange in the diary though, as the flowering will be stretching very far out as I let the lowers develop. Ed Rosenthal said in one of his books, "No flower before it's time." This plant is begging for me to heed that advice.
Speaking of flowers, they have decided to just chill out this week.
More white hairs of course, but no trichomes or even bulking has been noticed. Some of them seem to have little peach fuzz looking activity, but these are going to be needing much longer before I break the magnifier out to see how they are haha!
The older fan leaves have developed a clawing habit that has been concerning me. The flowers look fine and the soil hasn't seen nitrogen for a VERY long time now. I asked some people with way more knowledge than me and I was told to apply LITFA since the rest of the plant looks totally healty. What is this magical LITFA nutrient? It stands for Leave It The Fu*& Alone LOL There was also some mentions that I should add some perlite to the soil in the future, becasue the soil may be compacting some. I will certainly be doing that. They also mentioned that it could just be the strain or pheno. Maybe Spliff can chime in if they see this.
See you all next week!
Flowers seem to have stopped stretching. They are filling out quite well now.
No new fertilizer. For as big as she has got she doesn't seem to drink all that much. I am probably pumping a total of four gallons into her a week, and that has been average for the last few weeks. She will need watering tomorrow, so I am going to add a little molasses and Epsom salts into her water. Usually, with a cloth pot, they are really going through the water by now. She seems to sip... I am thinking this is why she doesn't respond well to love lol! She seems to thrive on neglect, as far as water and nutrients go. She is in a five-gallon cloth pot, one would think she would be needing more than this now. Especially in the summer.
There is a slight trichome frost growing more prevalent. Not enough for "lights off" pics yet, but it is there. I am hoping for much more! Her scent is still pretty mild. She is more fragrant when you are moving the flowers around to inspect how they are all doing, but still nothing in ambient air.
The bigger flowers in the pics will be harvested first, as I said last week. The lower flowers seem to be in two tiers. One bigger flush for patients, and then the last for me. For sleep.
Hopefully, she will be chunkier next week for everyone!! See you then!!
Pistils are changing and I am finally seeing some light trichome action happening. Leaf curling continues but, she is still growing quite well. It is really interesting watching the double flower bud ripen. The pistils get really brown and then more shoot out.
I am thinking we are on the last leg of the journey. She obviously needs to fatten up her flowers but, this really happens rapidly in the last few weeks. Hoping the trichomes will show more predominately with this bulking.
Leaf fade has been occurring for several weeks now. As they yellow I take them off. I need that air circulation and don't feel that I am removing too many at a time so as to cause shock.
No additional fertilizer. I think I will stick with water from here on out. She has had enough mycorrhiza and I am worried that any molasses at this stage in the game will start to mess with PH or cause other issues. She is really taking less water now. When she was actively growing I would water two gallons at a time which would result in overspill through the cloth pot and then it would wick up the rest from the floor overnight. This week has shown a drastic stop in that. It tells me she is reaching maturity and just not growing as fast as she has been before.
Hopefully, next week will be some fatter buds! Take care. Stay safe.
This week has been pretty much the same. I don't understand why they aren't bulking by now... Trichomes even.
Only watered, no feed at all. Heat (ambient temps) has dropped. This mitigates heat stress. I have pics of the heat gun. It's an 8 to 9-week strain and I feel I have been bending over backwards to make sure they are happy...
So, I need t to have patience. Spliff says it is an 8 to 9-week strain.
I hope it bulks fast.
I will say that I always get paranoid that I messed something up and, in the end, realized patience is all I needed in the long run. We shall see.
Clearly, the white hairs are rebuilding. Not so much with the trichomes. I hope I can laugh at this in the end...
The feed has ONLY been water this week.
We shall see! See you all next week!
This week has been a rollercoaster. Some good news, some bad. I will start with the good:
Flowers are really fattening up now. It seems she is racing to the finish line rapidly. Trichomes are starting to shimmer and the new flush of pistils is starting to darken. Flowers are certainly getting sticky with resin.
The bad news is the heat and humidity that most of the world has experienced this summer appears to be taking its toll. I have noticed some late-flowering stamens (nanners) forming. I doubt this is the strain, I am sure it's from the heat I have desperately tried to keep under control. One bright side, the humidity seems to be kept in check with an old school hack I learned from an old grower.
Back when people only had an unused closet with zero ventilation, they would add a bucket of rock salt to their garden. This consists of two buckets. The first is drilled with holes in the bottom. The next bucket has bricks or something to keep the two buckets from completely sealing together when they are stacked. After inserting the bucket with the holes into the other one, salt is added. This salt takes moisture out of the air and, over time, will actually drip water down into the second bucket through the drilled holes and you dump it out periodically.
I am shocked at how well this is working. My humidity was an alarming 76% before adding this, now it is at 46%. It did take a few days to get stabilized, and during the day my fan is pulling in more moist air, but the plant is certainly doing better than it was. My mold nightmares are hopefully over now. The suggested salt was rock salt but all I could find was water softener crystals. Rock salt should be easy to find in the winter, as it is used for icy sidewalks. Ironically, I won't need it then. I will be investing next spring though, just in case.
Hopefully, we will be ready to harvest (or at least start) next week. Some colas are starting to look like they will be ready soon.
Next summer, I may shut the garden down for the hottest months. It's just too nerve-wracking and stressful.
Oh my gosh time got away from me! Sorry for the late update.
Really mellow strain if you are either new to cannabis or have a relatively low tolerance. This comes as no surprise since the strain-description specifically states there is no raciness or paranoia whatsoever. Those who are looking for a more psychedelic strain are certainly going to want to explore Spliff's heavier Sativa offerings. Works great at bedtime, but definitely not a day ruiner. I did run into some issues later in life, but it was my fault for not providing accurate perlite levels for adequate aeration. She threw some nanners at the end but I am fairly positive this was my doing. Also could have been heat stress. I, like many others around the globe, experienced a scroching hot summer. This was not a normal weather pattern summer at all.
The strain took longer to finish than expected. Again, I failed to add proper aeration so this was probably one of the reasons. I also srogged this plant so this could have added to the perceived length of time. She did not stink up the place, which was a huge plus. I do wish she was a tad stronger, but not having to worry about going one toke over the line and end up in paranoia land is a nice treat. I don't own a proper scale so the weight is estimated. I did get three quart jars packed to the top and one more quart that is dry trim for edibles.
Good idea man , I'm struggling with a dehumidifier 😅 it's bringing the moist levels down but the temps up 😬the bucket with salt sounds like it could work🤙🏼
@@HiddenColorado, Ha! Yes, I don’t start my diaries until the seeds are up and running.
After they are off the runway, I start. You are correct, that probably was around day 10 ;-). Don’t want hopes up and then a failed seedling. Been there too many times lol
And yes, full diary is a must!!!
