Greetings friends, this is another new grow diary, second time with this strain. Hawaiian Puff comes from Lucky 13 Seeds and the lineage was plucked from a regular seed, ending up as a female. That clone is this plant’s mother (check out Hawaiian Puff Clone 2020 (I)). Flowering projects as 9-11 weeks, genetics are Blue Hawaiian sativa x Godbud. I transplanted a couple of weeks ago into a container bottom filled with BX Pro Mix, and then side filled with 10 parts BX Pro Mix: 5 parts worm castings, 1 part Fox Farms Happy Frog soil. It seems to be producing normal looking growth. My tent is hung mylar DIY. My lights are a 300 actuall watt full spectrum LED with a smaller pod that is 1/6th that again. This is day 64. I only have one clone, so I’ll look to rectify that this time through.

Day 71 for Hawaiian Puff. Puff is one of the new clones that is actually growing normally. It has a bit of a droop when I checked, as it needed water. I’ve been trying to allow the clones to really dry out and spread their roots. No issues for the single clone.

Day 79 for this Hawaiian Puff clone. Things are looking good. I transplanted this week to a larger container. I bottom filled with BX Pro Mix, and then side filled with a mixture that was 40 parts BX Pro Mix: 5 Fox Farms Happy Frog: 5 worm castings: 1 ASB Greenworld Sheep Manure Compost: 1 ASB Greenworld Black Earth: 1 ETI Greenhouse Gold Seafood Compost: 1 Blood and Bonemeal pellets: 1 Green Gaia mineralized phosphate (guano): 1 part alfalfa meal compost: 1 pulverized egg shells.

Day 86 for this Hawaiian Puff clone. It is stretching and getting used to the large container. Lots of soil amendment so I am only giving water. A bit more room in my veg tent now, too.

Day 93 for this Hawaiian Puff clone. Poor pictures on account of LST, but I finally got a lot of tent maintenance done. I also transferred some plants to this new veg. tent. Now I have two 300 actual watt full spectrum LEDs, but at a greater height. I didn’t officially take any clones.

Day 100 for Hawaiian Puff. Tough to take reasonable pictures, the plant is all over the place and trying to train itself to the light. I hit it with some 24-8-16 All Purpose Miracle Grow earlier in the week and so its reflected in the nitrogen excess (single blade leaves, abundance of sprouting). I fed because I wanted a bunch of canopy that I can trim over time and build up. Hawaiian Puff tends to be bushy. It will clear the nitrogen, I’m not worried about it. Unfortunately, it broke its main tie this week and I didn’t notice, so I lost some training and had to retie today.

Day 107 for this Hawaiian Puff clone. Chugging along and adjusting to the LST. After overnuting a bit last week I can anticipate it being on the verge of deficiency again. I still need to make mods to this veg tent so the temps aren’t always toasty, that isn’t helping the phosphorous and purple stems. It still looks much improved from last week and I can see a canopy forming. I have done two consecutive irrigations of water.

Day 114 for Hawaiian Puff. Back on track, I gave some All Purpose Miracle Grow early in the week after watering everything through. Then a day before photos, I top dressed with blood and bone meal, mineralized phosphate, worm castings, in a mix of HP Pro Mix. BudXs was pushing me to up my game a bit, so I sealed off the top of my veg. tent where the rafters are, hoping that raises temps a degree or two which would reflect next week. One of the first photos is the Jurassic Park type shit I deal with in an open tent in a basement. Sort of like that scene in the original Jumanji with Robin Williams.

Day 121 for this Hawaiian Puff clone. Its been a challenging week elsewhere, so its nice to see green leaves. I’ve been irrigating the top dressing through. The downfall of this is I didn’t anticipate such a hold up in other tents and so I know the soil is going to get too rich and compacted. In future I’m going to get back to some extra perlite. I got some ladybugs for pest control, and I dropped some in this tent. I also anticipate some preventive pest control when orders arrive from online. I’ve been burned, badly. Because of my outlets, and setup, what I have available and whats convenient, the tent is perpetual 24/7, I expect the ladies to struggle without a night cycle. Since sealing the tent it has been very warm. The ladies have tried to find shade and cool areas to hang out, even around and inside the hole where the power cord exits the fan! When I get my HPS tent cleaned out, hopefully this one willl be ready to flower. Now its just a matter of maintaining way longer than I expected.

Day 128 for Hawaiian Puff. Now I am seeing some good things. The better temperatures, the top dressings from other plant transplants, the ladybugs patrolling. I sprayed Hawaiian puff with Safer’s potassium based insecticide soap this week to ensure I get ahead of my pest problems. I read that as the soap evaporates, it acts as a light potassium feeding. Regardless, things look good. Time to clone ... ?

Day 133 for Hawaiian Puff. The time has come to flower. I was waiting on supplies that are delayed in shipping, so its on. I used Safer’s Insecticide Soap again and really washed everything. Recent reading suggests not to defoliate, tons of plant matter. I would have previously chopped alot of it. The HPS tent is all cleaned out with insecticide soap. I used the opportunity to change my timer to have lights on at night. It will only be a subtle difference in the basement. Last photo is new home with the flash.

Day 140 for Hawaiian Puff. One week of flowering complete, nine weeks to go. The window on Lucky 13’s website is sort of ranged, so ten weeks of flowering would be in the middle. I eventually did spray with some neem oil, mixed with potassium insecticide soap and water. I went light with the neem to conserve, and as its just preventative. Immediately after the weekend last week I mixed a compost tea which steeped overnight. I took 2 cups blood and bone meal, 2 cups of alfalfa meal compost, 2 cups worm castings, one cup Myke Flower mycorrhizae, 1 tablespoon of blackstrap molasses, and mixed it all with 20 liters of water. I pulsed it with a concrete mixer/drill periodically all day and left it overnight. The next day I diluted and watered, aiming for 10:1 water to tea. It was more of a veg. mix, but of the flowering plants it was just right for Hawaiian Puff which hasn’t been fed in quite some time. My lighting in my veg. tent is a 600Watt Vivosun HPS. Taking inspiration from HellishJam and BudXs the true masters.

Day 147 for Hawaiian Puff. Two weeks of flowering complete, eight weeks to go. I watered just as lights were coming on and as I was taking this week’s photos. Before that, I had fed 0-10-10 Alaska Morbloom with a popsicle stick dip of blackstrap molasses and Plant Prod MJ Spike (CalMag). Looking good, compared to the recent harvest of its mother especially.

Day 154 for Hawaiian Puff. Three weeks of flowering complete, seven weeks remaining. Nice to see this bushy beauty outside in natural light. This plant prompted more pest treatment as I saw some evidence on lower canopy, examination under microscope proved that total elimination under high heat is tough. I fed 0-50-30 Fox Farms Beastie Bloomz early in the week, with a popsicle stick dip of blackstrap molasses and Plant Prod MJ Spike (CalMag). As stated treated with potassium soap and neem oil, trying not to overdo it on the buds. I just need to delay and control. It has been a heat wave which has been causing my whole home temperature issues. My basement is warmer than room temperature, and so my tents even hotter. I replaced my thermometer and the now accurate reading isn’t any more encouraging.

Day 163 for Hawaiian Puff. Four weeks of flowering complete, six weeks remain. Going to be a long haul. This plant is very bushy and has been the one prompting pest treatment and paranoia. Pests can hide everywhere. But, its worth it as the buds are getting big and dense. I must look into some silica, or better training, as the buds want to just lay down with all the movement and stress. I did tie them, but not tight as I don’t want to rely on bouquet, and concentrating potential mites in the middle. For now, still growing even on their side. Last irrigation was water, but I alternate, and the feeding prior was 0-50-30 Fox Farms Beastie Bloomz, and I add a popsicle stick dip of blackstrap molasses and Plant Prod MJ Spike (CalMag).

Day 170 for Hawaiian Puff. Five weeks of flowering complete, five weeks to go. Halfway through the marathon and no mite wave in sight - a completely different experience. I did preventively treat with potassium based soap but not neem oil as I’m phasing it out with so much bud around. Things look manageable. The physical shape of the plant is a monstrosity. The branches are too weak and the buds getting bigger and bigger, it has no strength and just lays down. I have stopped moving it out of the tent. Because of the heat of the HPS I don’t have many options for tying to the tent. The buds are still growing though, they are absolutely rock hard even at halfway. I am continuing alternating water with 0-50-30 Fox Farms Beastie Bloomz, a popsicle stick dip of blackstrap molasses, and Plant Prod MJ Spike (CalMag).

Day 177 for Hawaiian Puff. Six weeks of flowering complete, four weeks of flowering remain. These cannons are solid. Still lots of veg. but I’ll give that a chance to get frosty outside at the end. I’ll still be applying the heavy duty 0-50-30 Beastie Bloomz with a popsicle stick dip of blackstrap molasses and Plant Prod MJ Spike (CalMag), not time to fade yet. The leaves themselves are only starting to fade green now, way late for my typical. This plant is deceptive, looks ugly but the final product will be worth it. Almost forgot to mention, got a nice video very early in the week. This shows how effective treatments are, still a presence, but hardly anything. Even those hanging around are sickly and not up to their usual vigor. Neat to see. I did treat with potassium soap after this video, extending control - very effective. Not using neem at this point through flower. Shout-out to Lucky 13 Seeds!!

Day 184 for Hawaiian Puff. Seven weeks of flowering complete, three weeks to go. Oh mama. The smell is overpowering, pungent, skunk, fuel, daaaaaaaank. This is where you are going to see a star. Don’t let the floppiness fool you, this one is a swollen beauty. I have been pushing the Beastie Bloomz, but now its transitioned to 0-10-10 Alaska Morbloom with blackstrap molasses and Plant Prod MJ Spike (CalMag). The cool nights are going to cause the frost. I still expect a painful harvest effort, as the veg is all inter-tangled (in the bud).

Day 191 for the Hawaiian Puff clone. Eight weeks of flower complete, two weeks to go. I caved for the sake of the smell and applied food one last time this morning, 0-10-10 Alaska Morbloom with blackstrap molasses and Plant Prod MJ Spike (CalMag). The buds are just swollen and plump, but hard. Full of water and resin, I would describe them as being almost heavy as wet, but are dried out as I move them under cover every night (i.e. never rained on). Flush upcoming and final stretch. The smell is strong musk/must/fuel/pungent.

Day 199 for the Hawaiian Puff clone. Nine weeks of flowering, only one week to go. Lucky 13 gives a large range of harvest for this one, so in other times if I was desperate I wouldn’t feel bad about chopping now. I’d like to get more flushing in though and so one more week remains. You can see some nice colouration (deficiency) in the sugar leaves and leaves sticking out of the bud. I know the buds look like shit, but the smell! Such strong must/musk/pungent.

Day 204 for Hawaiian Puff. Ten weeks of flowering, it is time! I know some want to get things done fast. Maybe it could have come down sooner but look at the leaf fade! I think the extra time was worth the colours and progression. I have been regularly giving flushes of water. The buds are heavy and have a deep fuel smell. Harvest will be a pain in the a** with the amount of veg. everywhere.

This is a Hawaiian Puff clone from Lucky 13 seeds. This distributor provides regular seeds only so previous to this diary my friend and I grew a seed out and selected a clone to preserve the lineage. Jumping ahead, I had a fatal mistake this summer leaving my heat mat on, during a heat wave that even had my unfinished basement up to almost 30 degrees C. So, I lost many clones of different varieties, including my last clone of Hawaiian Puff. This triggered immense mourning. However, it turns out Lucky 13 provides some freebie seeds with every seed pack ordered (so yes, you can get multiple freebie strains in a single order) and so the last purchase we actually recouped this legend strain as a freebie. This was in fact the second time getting it as bonus from Lucky 13. This grow goes way, way back in time and so I was still using a different variety of soil amendment and still constructing my current veg. tent. It was also one of the first plants to experience the HPS fully in flower with no mites (its own pest population notwithstanding). The size worked out well for stretch, and the bush was ideally positioned. I’m not sure there is a way to grow Puff without training and using LST, it just off branches and becomes round, and leafy. It has the same annoying structures as a White Widow. It is best kept pruned and maintained. The thick tangle of a canopy makes it prime for mites and other pests, be prepared for pest prevention. Even after annihilating the spider mites elsewhere, they found sanctuary on Hawaiian Puff much longer as I slowly got at them. I did get rid of them completely, but the last few weeks finishing up outside would have also been a future chess move. No need. As stated, the last couple weeks outside gave Hawaiian Puff time to finish up, frost up due to temperatures, and also go the ten weeks of flower without holding things up. Despite it not having the strength to stand and being the most ugly mess, the colours displayed were beautiful. I was really able to fade this one without the overbearing deficiencies that may limit a plant. The smell wasn’t strong from afar, but the buds were DANK. Harvest revealed nice bulbous flowers, it was very deceiving. Lots of yield. The smells and aromas are faint compared to when ground and vaped. It is a strong, pungent, smelling salts like whiff of must/dank/fuel. I keep referencing White Widow, or Super Silver Haze, because thats the type of aromas, but no relations with the high. The smell is also more notable than those above, Hawaiian Puff has that element or twist of bad/weird within the pungency that makes you want to go back and smell more. Potency is very strong/high and the effects put me into a sativa leaning haze. I repeat its strong, one of the most potent I have grown. It hits your brain but is so powerful just makes you sleepy too. All around effects with pronounced eye and brain pressure. It makes my cheeks and eye sockets sweat. Think about that, and if you’ve ever experienced the same you’ll know what I mean. I’ve cloned Puff before and its quite easy. The temporary discontinuation of the line was more an overall garden mistake and so I’m not really seeing that as strain or grow specific to Hawaiian Puff. I have at least had experience going through the process and have given many clones away. I can’t really criticize Hawaiian Puff much at all. Just being a pain in the ass to maintain all the leaf veg., and the trimming during harvest is real; selecting a female from regular seeds is not for the faint of heart; flowering to really finish the buds takes a long 10 weeks. These three things could be criticisms but I would also grumble, complain, and bitch if I saw others on GrowDiaries whining about the above, so I don’t really consider them as real negatives. The genes are well worth the wait! I’ve be stretching to come up with negative aspects. The reality is Hawaiian Puff deserves a 10/10. Trying to limit or deny the score would be insincere. At least one growmie got a sample, and perhaps an observation is that its more difficult to share clones or regular seeds, compared to sending growmies a single feminized seed. It actually puts them in a position where they need to 1) get over themselves and do some female selection, and 2) support Lucky 13 seeds, another example of a great, small (Canadian) seed distributor that gets no advertisement space on GrowDiaries because they don’t pay into the model.

There was a large amount of leaf material so that portion of harvest was a pain. I was surprised by the size and bulk of the buds underneath, once the overall layer of vegetation was removed the task became much easier. I budwashed after wet trimming, a quick two step process: 1) a bowl of lemon juice concentrate, baking soda, and water. This is a quick agitation and swirl. 2) a bowl of just water for a rinse. After this I just hang the buds to dry, shaking the excess water off of using a salad spinner for loose material. No signs of pests at the end. I won!
