This week was full of surprises and a lot of learning from mistakes made which I will update throughout
Day 0
I put water in a pan and let the jiffy peat pellets absorb as much as they could. Should've left them for 10 mins as most people say but I just drained the excess water once they stopped growing. Only realised after the seeds had been put in so I just left it as is.
The 4 together are the Zkittles Auto, the 3 in a line are the Northern Lights Auto and the 1 on its own was the Silver Widow
P.S don't knock me on my cling film around a baking tray LOL, it was the best thing I had as a tray
Day 1-3
So I have a porch where it was really warm as the sun beams into it. I put the peat pellets there but it was also in direct sunlight so the pellets were drying out. Kept watering them throughout and then decided to put the tray on top of my cable box in a cupboard. Not much airflow or humidity but it was kept nice and warm, until the cable box turned itself off every night!
Day 4
To my surprise, most of the seeds had sprouted!
1 seed is peaking from under the top of the soil
1 wasn't showing any signs of sprouting
Day 5
7/8 Sprouted, the last one has finally started to peak just under the soil!
I decided to put my GoPro on and record the one that was peaking out. I haven't even looked at the time-lapse yet but I will upload it soon!
Day 6
All of the seeds have sprouted now. Put them outside for a bit in direct sunlight and some fresh air!
Day 7 - The first day of chaos
I bring the tray inside for the evening and over night so its warmer. Put them back in the porch and then during the day I put them outside.
Well today I made such a stupid mistake! I put the tray on a plastic garden chair and today was very windy! The wind was so strong it knocked the chair over sending my seedlings flying and rolling on the concrete.
So now I have no idea which plant is which strain. I separated some as I could make them out from old pictures with the yellow mark on the leaves.
My stupid mistake caused one of the seedlings stem to crack in 3 places! I tried to use some rope to assist the plant but this was a silly idea as I read a better idea a day later. I was fiddling around with this plant a lot, trying to get it in the best position and I don't think that helped it to survive.
The rest of the seedlings look like they're doing just fine :)
During this first week I was watering the peat pellet with tap water. The reading I'm getting on my good old cheapo ph tester was around 7.6. It's high but it will do for now until I get some bottled water and correct it down to around 6.5
Temperature throughout this week was lows of 9 degrees Celsius and highs of 23
Week 2
Day 8
So after doing a bit of research the best idea I found to keep the seedling stem straight was to cut open a straw and use that to support it. I did this for most of the seedlings just to keep them upright and to keep the broken one as straight as possible. But doing this I had to fiddle with the plant again and this didn't do it any justice.
All the other seedlings are looking great though!
Day 9
So I noticed the roots had started to pop out the end of the peat pellets so I decided to get their final homes ready. I'm using 7 gallon fabric pots with Biobizz all mix. I put the soil in the pots and gave them a little water, left them for a few hours and came back with the seedlings. I mixed up the soil as it looked like only the top got the water and then I cut off the net on the peat pellets as I've read that some people have had issues with the roots not being able to push through. I did this just as an extra precaution. Potted up the plants and filled up the soil a little higher on the stems so it had some support.
Whilst I was putting the soil into the pots I realised that only 3 out of 5 bags of soil came. I decided to evenly share the soil into each pot. Really upset about this as the pots are now shallower than I wanted as I wanted the roots to grow as big as possible.
Once the peat pellets were in, I gave the soil a little bit of water just around the middle where the peat pellets were as there was no point watering the whole pot as the roots were just in the middle.
Day 10
Not much going on, growing well.
I haven't been writing down how much water the plants have been getting, I've been watering slightly as the top of the soil drys out. I also haven't kept track on the temperature properly but they've been outdoors in the sun above 20 degrees celsius during the day. The day starts off around 13 degrees and peaks above 20 for most of the day and then back inside for the evenings and overnight.
Day 11
The plants are still growing nice. I've just realised that I move them around so much it would've been nice to number the plants so I can have a log of how well each plant has grown. I will be eating as much ice cream as I can so I have some sticks to label and stick in the pot so we can see the growth of each plant.
Day 12
I check on the plants regularly when I can and in the morning I noticed one of the leaves of 1 plant had a small hole through it. One of my worst fears are pests! Had a look over all of the plants and I had loads of little flies on them. Some were green and some were black. After doing my research it looks like they are Aphids as they were mainly under the leaves and from the colours. I brushed off all of the ones I could see and killed them. I will be keep and eye out regularly to make sure the plants don't have an infestation of these and to try and refrain from stressing the plants.
More leaves are coming through on a couple of the plants! One looks like it hasn't grown much since but I will give it time.
More pictures will be uploaded, I still haven't labeled each plant just yet though!
