So - all good things must come to an end - however, not all endings are good. I have harvested, but not at the time I wanted, or rather, the time she (Barney's Farm Glue Gelato Auto) would have been ready. As with all outdoor grows there are going to be challenges and problems, especially with the funky weather this year. I have posted some photos of the damage, I thought about just scrubbing the diary, but to be honest, I ended up coming to the conclusion that, as it was my first grow, letting the community see for themselves was the better option. Any comments or advice are welcome. To cut a very irritating story short, the last two weeks have not been ideal growing conditions, even running her in the greenhouse & outdoor. The sun may be free, but growing in nature has some harsh costs. I have been worried about the humidity levels at night, but having tried to just let things run without spending too much money, I have paid the ultimate price. The last two weeks there has been a lot of rain, mixed in with very hot days. This has caused two of the girls to get bud rot (I am running three strains - and yes one of my other girls has been struck down in the same manner and I am thinking only positive thoughts that the third (Barney's Farm ZkittleZ OG Auto) has managed to avoid getting hurt). As mentioned this is genuinely my first grow, and so even having done an enormous amount of research and having spent a huge amount of time with the girls, checking that everyone was happy and healthy, it seems that bud rot builds out of sight and the first sign of it means that some serious damage has already been done. I was taking some photos for the diary and noticed that one of the sugar leaves looked as though it was changing color. On closer inspection it looked like about a quarter of the leaf was brown and wilted (see pics). I had read that if you pull on them and they come out without any effort, that is an issue and most probably bud rot. As I went around the top half of the plant it seemed that the issue had only really got to the top cola. Which was looking super ripe and had sugar everywhere. I was very reluctant to admit the truth and after another half an hour of detective work I had to face the painful fact that she had an issue. She had been smelling ridiculously delicious, but I did notice a slightly different aroma which had me rather concerned. Now I don't know if I have done the right thing (comments & advice appreciated if anyone has a view), but I just cut her down. Taking away the top cola, which had real damage (see pics) and then focused on trying to save as much of her possible. I was only 9 days into flushing (day 65 for her), and her trichomes were sill cloudy so I had assumed I had a few more days to wait until harvest, maybe a week at most. So close and yet so far from paradise, as Elvis once sang. I have put in a photo to (sort of) show what I managed to salvage as well as the horror show 'evidence'. I am absolutely gutted. She was a truly beautiful plant and had really put on weight - but it seems that weight just made her more vulnerable to bud rot risk. The humidity was over 80 for last few nights and regardless of what I did to control the environment in the greenhouse (ventilation/heater to dry the air, watering early in the day) I could not get it down. It has been a problem for two weeks and I guess that time just played its part and que sera, sera. As mentioned above one of my other girls (a Grizzly Purple Kush) also had a small amount and I took extreme (panic) measures and just cut her down as well. She wasn't due to be ready until day 77/80 and was on same time as the Glue Gelato Barney's Farm. I guess she would have put on much more weight and I am concerned because she had not been flushed at all. I just thought that I needed to get them both out of the greenhouse and to try and save as much as possible. For a first ever grow I was really hoping not to encounter any major issues (wow it has been a learning experience), and have been salivating at the thought of finally getting to taste the girls, but I have been taken down just before the finish line. I will update this again to give a final number on weight etc and how she smokes... it will only be the dry weight, therefore it will be minus the top cola (massive and dense) and one of the higher buds (which was also massive and sticky with crystals) as I was in no mood to even contemplate calculating wet weight as I was cutting her down. It was emotional ;-) The next morning I bought a massive dehumidifier and planted more seeds.

Grow Questions

ReggaePharmastarted grow question 4 years ago
Wk 8 on first ever grow. In first wk of diary are questions based around my inexperience. Anyone willing to have a look, many thanks in advance. Glue Gelato (Barney's Farm) suggests a 64-70 day harvest. Thinking about 70 or 77 as target? Stop feeding when? Start flushing day 60?

You have a long way to go. When it starts to look close to ripe it's usually a good time, because there's still 10-14 days, typically, from that point. Being familiar with trichome progression will help too. Start observing, now :) Anyway, your substrate will impact how long you flush. With soil you have extra room for error.. can always changeup midstream if it is going longer. Bring it down slowly though. Don't flood the thing. Normal irrigation with healthy runoff is all until top 1" dries again. you can only pick out the day if you are familiar with the plant. The plant does the planning, regardless.

Thank you for your responses - do you find that the dates on harvest are relatively accurate? I would like to understand when to stop feeding...

@Bud_Di_Spenza, appreciate the kind comments. Day 60 today. Target harvest from Barney's Farm for this strain is 64 - 70 days from germination. I tend to gravitate towards the latter end of that range, and agree that conditions are the obvious influence. Have only just started flushing. As it is the first attempt I am inclined to be early, rather than late... taking into account a two week flush I would be looking to harvest around day 72, 73, 74.... If I need to wait a few more days I can - am enjoying watching the girls grow. I did read that some people flush and then have up to 5 days dry before harvesting. Am not sure whether this is the right type of thing to be thinking about first time up, but I can recognise the logic. Keeping an eye on trichome development. Would prefer a 50/50 mix for this strain. Am hoping that she ripens up during the flush as she uses up any remaining nutrients. But am not overly concerned about having a 5 ounce plant, more that I have some high quality ganja to enjoy. If her smell is anything to go by, that first easy timer is going to be exceedingly tasty. Good luck with your grow.

@ReggaePharma, In my experience it's about 2-3 weeks longer than advertised, but that also depends a lot on the strain, light, nutes etc. While some of your close-ups already look pretty ripe, I would wait at least another two weeks (based on latest pictures) before flushing since the buds look like they still need some time. PS: Really enjoyed watching your grow, keep it up :)
