Cut four clones early to mid April from my first grow but they were a little neglected and two hardly had even rooted by the end of April. By the time I had a basic hydro setup ready for them one was big enough to need potting so I put it in coco and decided to use it for comparison purposes. Considering two had to be recut to get to root, I'm considering putting them in the dwc bin as week one. I'll exclude the fourth coco one from the diary but it will be in the pictures for comparison.
Moved plants into their own buckets and from the garage into a grow tent. The hydro plants have already out paced the coco plant, through I waited too long to repot the coco one so it's not a totally fair comparison.
Doing lots of defoliation every week to keep up with the dense growth it keeps putting on, I've gotten it nice and spread out though and haven't topped for a week so I'm flipping the lights to 12/12. There plants are starting to consume a massive amount of water and nutrients a day in the dwc buckets. Currently a half gallon a day per plant. It will be close to a gallon a day per bucket soon. I did a complete water change last week and I should probably do that again next week since the useful volume of water each bucket holds is only 4 gallons.
Did a full water change out even though it has only been about 2 weeks since the last one, but the amount of water and nutrients I'm topping off through out the week, the small container sizes, and the fact I'm just using filtered water instead of RO or deionized makes me want to be cautious. Plenty of defoliation again this weekend, the 12/12 lighting didn't slow it down too much. I added two mars hydro 600 lights, and next week I'm planning to add two more and take out the mars hydro 1000 to use in my 2x2 tent. I decided 4 600s would get me a lot better light distribution than one mars hydro 2000.
Quite a bit of pruning needed again this week but it is finally slowing down with the dense veg growth after two weeks under 12/12. I noticed that the one in coco coir required a lot less though, it's flowers are slightly further along, and it's leaves seemed a little stickier when pruning which is giving me more reasons to not want to do dwc instead of coco with future grows.
Did another full water change out this weekend, and expecting to repeat every two weeks until harvest. Spent a long time trimming around all the bud sites to keep them from being completely shaded by the dense wide leaves that keep coming back. Noticing a lot of stickiness and tricomes adjacent to bud sites already. I can tell the better lighting is making going to have an impact in yield on this grow vs the last.
Veg growth finally slowing down in the dwc plants. Any leaves close to the lights are covered in a lot of trichomes. I went ahead and froze what I pruned so I can throw it in a bubble hash bucket later.
Did a full water change again this week. They probably could have used a little pruning but I didn't have enough time and I think they can wait until next weekend since the lower part of the colas aren't completely blocked from the lights.
A little late adding this week, but things are mostly the same as the last. However today I noticed the trichomes on the one I have in coir are a lot farther along than the ones in the dwc buckets. They are looking pretty cloudy with a decent percent of brown ones. The tricomes also appear smaller. I suspect it probably has more to do with it not having enough rinse through during fertigation than anything related to coir vs dwc, because I've been having a hard time getting a 20% drain to waste when watering the coir one with the taller fabric pot it's in. So maybe it's over fertilized and maybe has been slightly dehydrated at times.
I looked over the coco coir plant in detail with a 60x magnifier and decided it was ready for harvest soon if not already. So I started a flush of that. I ran 3 gallons of Ph-ed water through. I'll continue that daily withv less water.. just the normal watering amount. The three DWC bucket plants look very close and they'll probably be ready by the end of the week so I decided not to do another full water change and instead save the work for flushing those next weekend.
The close up pictures of the colas are from dwc plants, and the trichomes mostly the coco coir plant.
Went ahead and harvested this weekend after continuing to water the Coco coir plant with just filtered ph adjusted water. Thursday I topped off the DWC buckets with the same, and harvested 3 days later. The DWC bucket plants required so much trimming again. The coir one only took a fraction of the time. It wasn't nearly as big but the buds seemed good and dense, but I think next grow I'll work on seeing how I can improve and automate my coir fertigation. I marked the hangers holding my coir harvest so I can compare the yield to the dwc ones.
Harvest totals:
Trimmed flower coir plant: 3.95oz
Sugar leaf trim coir plant: 1.85oz
Trimmed flower for three DWC plants: 13.5oz
Sugar leaf trim for 3 DWC plants: 7.6oz
Total trimmed bud: 17.45oz
Total sugar leaf trim: 9.45oz
Total trichome dense material: 26.9oz
I was really disappointed in the DWC plants again after drying. Two plants had really loose larfy buds, and as a result almost got over dried. All the DWC ones took forever to trim. The bud density and quality of the coir plant was superior and it was at a lot better moisture content after 8 days of drying.
I'm eager to try a different stain that's not so time intensive to prune and trim and has more centralized colas instead of so much popcorn nug and larf. But the quality at least is super strong and racy, and the smell has been excellent even throughout all stages of cure in the other plant.
With the improved lighting, trichome density was insanely higher compared to my previous grow. I'd say I had more trichomes at 12 weeks on this grow than on my last one at 16 weeks.
@sativa_lover, Barneys farm for autos mate they got some crackers.. 2020 release was decent.. cali strains as well. I'm running the wedding cake auto now and not one problem with her.. no heavy feeds and shes loving life and smelling like the best plant I've ever grown
@Blueboy2019, Thanks! It's a 4'x4' tent and I used one Mars Hydro TS 1000 for veg and am using 4 Mars Hydro TS 600 watt lights for flower. I'm planning to start using my 2x2 tent as a veg tent with the 1000 light and the 4x4 as a flower tent, and try some auto flower strains next.
@sativa_lover,
I figured I would have a decent amount myself and I already have several 5 gallon buckets so the size fits. Going to go with a 3 size dry and ice. We’re the grown sun bags good quality?
@MalicetoDream, the ones I bought were 1 gallon size and the Grow Sun brand and I thought they worked well. The plastic buckets I got at Lowe's seemed a couple inches too short though. For the four plants I'm growing now, I'm probably going to get 5 gallon bags since the amount of dense tricome covered sugar leaves is so great. I went off of subcool's video and blog post for instructions. Next time I'd probably do a second rinse and keep more of the large and small screenings. Maybe someday I'll get a rosin press and save some work.
I think you're looking to harvest a little too soon. My 2 cents is they look like they could use another 7-10 days.. It looks like the trics aren't milky enough..
@IndoorDwc, Thanks for the advice. Yeah, my plan was to harvest today which is 7 days after I took the pictures (and which I just got through with). Trichomes were looking pretty milky today.
