Hello growmies,
I'm excited to start this new journey. It is the experimental path I'm going this time. I thought I would try out this self-watering system with a couple of autos this summer. Cross your fingers for me!
I'm also trying out this new kind of soil... which I already start to doubt that it's a good idea. It seems like it has the properties of coco, but I can't really tell yet, so I will have to figure it out on the way.
I also have two plants on the side in a mix of 70% BioBizz lightmix soil and 30% coco. So far these last two seems to have a better start. I think I will make a separate diary for them.
I started 5 seeds in total. 3 went in the new soil and 2 in the coco mix soil. They all made it fine so far.
Here's a bit about the strain from the breeder's website:
"Her name sums her up perfectly; Fat Banana Automatic stinks of tropical fruits and produces large, chubby flowers. The strain is the autoflowering version of Fat Banana, an aromatic classic. The original made her mark on the cannabis world with her insane scent, massive THC level, and rewarding yield. Our breeders decided to cross this popular photoperiod variety with a ruderalis specimen over several generations to create a fast and impressive indica auto. Now, she’s easier to grow than ever before and offers a great yield in record time!
THC: 22%
CBD: Low
Yield Indoor : 375 - 450 gr/m2
Yield Outdoor: 90 - 175 gr/plant
Height Indoor: 70 - 100 cm
Height Outdoor: 80 - 120 cm
Flowering time: 7 - 8 weeks
Harvest Month: 9-10 weeks after sprouting
Genetic Background: Fat Banana x Cookies Auto
Type: Sativa 20% Indica 70% Ruderalis 10%

Flavor: Earthy, Sweet "
UPDATE(Details on the system)
Hey @GoodVibeSpreader
I guess you’re referring to these ladies. I have also grown the photoperiod version.
Anyway, I will answer your questions here so others can also profit of it.
I was actually trying myself to find references to this type of system, but without luck. I bought these ready made “water tanks” in Dk and they are called capillary pots.
The idea is that only a smell portion of the roots of the plants are submerged in the water from the tank, so the plant can self regulate how much they drink.
I added air stones to help with the absorption of nutrients and to keep pathogens out. You still have to watch out not to overwater. I mean don’t fill up the reservoir more than what they need for ca. 2 weeks. Well, this is mainly cuz old water gets nasty after some time.
If you find anything similar to this system outside Dk please let me know 😉
Uuhhh the girls are doing great! I started giving them nuts 1.02EC and they love it!
I also started applying a mist with neem oil as there are some tiny creatures that I don't want on them.
This is my first time as far as I can remember that I get to overwater my plants. I thought that since this soil I have is full of coco I can treat it as coco... but I was wrong.
So now I'm just waiting... to dry out, and hoping for more sun and heat, summer where are you!?
The girls got happy again by simply stopping to water them :D
They definitelly went into flower mode these last two days. I can't wait for some more sunny days!
I'm considering doing some LST on them, mainly to make some more space between them.
Lots of magic has happened this last week! The girls got big and they started showing their sex too.
They've basically been untouched.
I'm happy the self-watering system works so well so far!
The girls are doing fine, they are very easy to look after. I go in, and I admire them! :D
They are well into bloom now and a bit less than halfway to go.
I did top watered them with 5l nut solution this week. The water tank is empty... I kept it like this so I could see how the R.Gorillas would have it with the tank full. I didn't want to take the risk for all of them. But now that the Gorillas are looking good I'm planning to fill the tank up for the Bananas as well and put one air stone in there as well.
I'm very happy with the way this went, it was a very easy Grow. Both the self-watering plant and the ones in the pots turned out great with low Maintainance.
Next time I will use a different soil.
The girls are forming some very nice compact buds. The smell is amazing, very tutti-fruity :D
Today I will finally give them... I guess... 15l of feed water in their tank and blow some air bubbles in there as well. It looks like the royal gorillas like that so much, that I have to make it for the bananas as well.
The first two ladies that were in the pots got harvested this week. This time surprised me how fast it went. For some reason it got stuck in my head that it should take 12 weeks instead for 10, and then boom, I noticed the smell and the color of these girls, then I checked the trichomes, they were ready. Luckily they got a few days after I flushed them.
