Hello - having witnessed some truly epic grows on this site, this is my first grow - motivated by medicinal needs, (am running three strains), this specific diary is for Barney's farm ZkittleZ OG Auto - I thought I would put it up for review in order to encourage any helpful advice that the community can offer. Greenhouse and outside combo, (essentially avoiding rain) and as it is the first attempt to understand the craft, I have tried to keep things as simply as possible. I will start separate diaries for the other two strains, Barney's farm Glue Gelao Auto and Grizzly Purple Kush Auto from BlimBurn seeds - but all three were started together and have been (subjected) put through the same feeding/watering regime.
As I write this it is week 8 - the girls are at 52 days. This girl was planted in a small pot post germination (1st May), transplanted into final pot (25ltr fabric pot) on the 17th of May, which was when I started to feed her. Regular ph'd water between 6.5 & 6.8. Occasional foliar spray with ecofective bugs & mildew. I stopped spraying when there were obvious signs of flowering.
Have been feeding since week 3 - first with some seaweed extract, then with some GroSure tomato food (5ml in 4.5ltrs - across the three plants) and finally with Vitax Q4 powder (7.5g to 10mg). Feeding schedule is circa every 3 days .... if it has been humid or raining I have tended to stretch to every four days.
As mentioned above, comments welcome. Would be interested to know if I am vaguely on track from anyone who has grown this specific strain before... however there are a serious number of questions I would appreciate having answers to any of them (please see below)... from my 'research' the majority of the community grow in tents, but I would still be grateful for any suggestions.
Is the suggested harvest date (64 - 70 days) reasonably accurate? BF's reputation is very good and I am impressed with the quality of their seeds, however I am finding it tough to gauge where I am in the life cycle of the grow and whether or not I am on time, a little behind or if it is even possible, ahead for any reason.
How much can grow environment effect this timeline for this strain and autos in general? I am not talking about amount of sunlight (I cannot control that element) but whether it is reasonable to expect a delay to harvest date if environmental factors are not optimal?
Does growing in a greenhouse impact this at all?
If the timeline changes, what are the signs to look for - pistils changing colour, additional trichome development (I understand pre-harvest analysis of seeing mix of milky and amber) but as the buds are developing I am still unsure as to a few things.
How to know when to stop feeding?
How to know when to start flushing? Is two weeks the right amount of time? Is this to be repeated every day until harvest?
How much h20 to flush with for 25ltr - 30 ltr fabric pots? Is it until one sees significant run off? (I have the pots sitting in saucers)
How much run off is one looking for? (Is water being 'clearer' important?
Is it important to stop watering at all a few days before harvest?
As mentioned above, I would be grateful for any advice and/or answers to the questions above.
First rain of the grow - but still good amount of sun. Fed her some seaweed and GroSure Tomato food. As this (alongside other plants on this run) are my first attempt - I am not going to do any training. I prefer to just watch how the plants grow and learn more about the strain(s) before trying anything too funky.
Carried on with the seaweed / GroSure Tomato food combo - gave her a good flush to see what the run off levels were like - discovered these fabric pots (30ltr) with 25ltr soil and 5 ltrs of perlite can take a load of h20.
Seen a big stretch - looks as though she has started to switch into flowering - last round of seaweed and GroSure Tomato food (5ml in 5ltrs across three plants) before starting Vitax Q4 (10mg or 7.5mg per plant - worked into soil and 1.5 ltrs of water
Another big stretch - have switched to Vitax Q4 powder - flowering under way - weather has been a varied. Having to redesign layout of greenhouse weekly as the girls compete for space...
Continuing with the Vitax Q4 (7.5mg per plant worked into soil with 1.5ltrs of water - rained most of the week - not sure whether or not this 'delays' things...
Still have questions about knowing when to stop feeding and when to start thinking about flushing?
Visually it appears that I am 'on schedule' but as this is my first attempt I have to guess ... harvest date is meant to be 70-77 days.
I assume it is better to aim for the later date of 77 days?
Do autoflowers put on a lot of weight during the last few weeks? (I appreciate that environmental factors determine this), but is that the way they are designed?
If anyone has grown this strain outside or in a greenhouse who have a view on the above questions I would appreciate any response.
She is a big girl - almost as wide as tall - circa 1m - two doses of seaweed (10g each time) and one final Vitax Q4 (7.5g) - also gave her a mini flush after the Vitax just to push remnants of previous feeding - starting to put on bud weight - I think I can continue to feed for another week (am on day 57) - before two week flush - target is 70-77 from Barney's Farm but I am unsure if I am on track or not - will keep checking pistil and trichome development - if an auto gets big is it worth waiting a week - or because it is an auto, the alarm clock is not able to be adjusted - first ever grow and so am a little clueless on the timing side of things.. certainly doesn't look ripe yet - but how much bud weight is usually added in the flushing stage?
So she has moved past week 9 - starting to ripen and is putting on weight - - pistils still creamy white with a few turning orange. Trichomes clear/cloudy mix and so will give her one more week of feeding (Vitax Q4 - 7.5mg and 10g of seaweed) and then think about starting to flush every two days around day 69/70. Across all my grows it seems I will be a week or maybe two over the estimated harvest date (70 days for ZkittleZ OG from Barney's Farm) - probably environmental factors at play, does a greenhouse (and shitty weather) slow things down? Does anyone know much weight does this strain tends to add in last few weeks (including the flushing period....) ? It is all new to me, but I am genuinely enjoying the experience in of itself.... despite the moments of anxiety when discovering something new (outdoor/GH challenges), there is something incredibly peaceful about the whole process.
Week 10 - stopped feeding and started to flush, (after the issues my other girls I do not want to ask lightning to strike three times)... Barney's Farm harvest target is 70-77 days.. She just hit day 70 and even to my untrained eye she doesn't look anywhere near ready... am flushing every three days, (it has been especially humid) and giving her about 8 liters split across two waterings - she is putting on weight,.... will keep an eye on things pistils and trichome development; have also decided to leave her to dry for a few days at the end of the flush just so that she isn't carrying too much water into the dying (hanging stage).. so it could be an 84+ day harvest - as mentioned the weather has been funky which I guess is impacting her ability to fill out and get really ripe, generally it is very humid (in the greenhouse at night) even with dehumidifier running.. so the conditions are not optimal and my set up is not exactly pro. Just learning and adapting as the days go by.
She is covered in sugar, at night under torch like she looks like she is covered in a beach of diamonds! Smell is starting to come through, a quick rub of a sugar leaf and she is sticky and the aroma is very fruity....
Quick question - I have noticed on some of the indoor grows that the leaves really fade out as the plant uses up all remaining nutrients within the root system/soil, does this also happen with greenhouse/outdoor grows - with it simply being a matter of time playing out, or is it due to using indoor lighting systems?
A fantastic grow, she was a super plant... strong performer in what were less than optimal conditions... high yielding (107g dry weight), dense, sticky buds ... showed excellent resilience throughout ... her structure was awesome ... Barney's Farm genetics are obviously first class .. from germination to harvest she was such a smooth plant .. strong veg, then burst into flower .. topped out over a meter tall and was equally as wide .... had never grown before but she was a dream to have in first crop ...
Admittedly I could have probably let her run for another week (or more, but I had limited knowledge as to what I was doing), although i do know the trichomes were all milky not amber so I was evidently early, but needs must!) and due to the abuse she was subjected to from radical changes in climate and conditions... from hot and dry to wet and high humidity (there were small signs of bud rot on day 76) combined with my inexperience... it seemed sensible to not encourage any further damage.. she had filled out enough and due to it being my first grow, I did not want to risk any further loss... the three girls for this round all got hit with similar conditions and she certainly managed to deal with them the best.. out of the three (ZkittleZ OG & a Glue Gelato from Barney's Farm and a Grizzly Purple Kush from Blimburn - all autos) the ZkittleZ got taller, wider and weightier than the others... but also showed higher resistance to pests and bud rot... as mentioned above I recognise that I could have let her run, but my conditions are not optimal and although I learnt a great deal during this first attempt.. it will take me a while to fine tune how I grow.. I am running a mix of greenhouse and outdoor... which has a lot of benefits, but also some unforeseen issues.. growing seems to be perpetual beta... a constant learning process.. one which I have enjoyed immensely... but I do wish I had sorted out more fans (mid way through) and a dehumidifier (day 67) from the very start.
I don't do wet weighing, but will update this once I have dried her out... however she had by far the biggest yield of the three I ran this time. I would add that the only obvious difference to the grow for her was that I used a soil with a higher peat ratio... which I think is a more favourable soil for cannabis plants compared to those with a low ratio, or none at all. I would like to find and try new soil mediums to see whether this is correct.
I did not use any special, or rather specific cannabis designed nutrients... just seaweed, tomato food and Vitax Q4 when transitioning into bloom. I did pH the water throughout the grow, starting with daily watering before spreading it out to every couple of days with heavier amounts each time. No training techniques were attempted, a tiny bit of defoliation when necessary.. was more interested to see how she would grow without any influence from me... I used 30litre (8 gallon) fabric pots.
Update - dry weight ended up at 107g. Lost a small amount to bud rot but am genuinely happy with overall yield. Still curing, will update again once I have smoked her...
ReggaePharma, I love the height of your ZKOGA =D !!! I've also been growing Zkittlez OG Auto over the last few months indoors and outdoors. Mine are both quite a bit shorter than yours. However, mine are limited to very small pots and too deep into flowering to even consider transplanting. Take a look if you like =) Great work, keep it up !!

@Omahoney_Canna_Thusiast, thank you. She is certainly a big girl. as wide as she is tall. Am a big fan of Barney's Farm and am seriously looking forward to enjoying this strain. Good luck with your grow, will keep an eye on your progress.
ReggaePharma, great job (as far as I know lol)! I'm a first timer as well and have just started a Barneys Farm Zkittlez OG auto myself. I'm at day 6, long way to go but seeing your journal gave me some confidence. I look forward to seeing your dry weight. Like I said, I'm a first timer so I can't answer any of your questions, but you seem to have learned a lot along the way. Congrats on the harvest!
