Started in water on June 29 and then into Solo cup.
Not quite a Super Soil mix but pretty close: greenhouse grade soil mix as a base, then adding roughly 25% perlite, alfalfa pellets, bone meal, worm castings, compost, dolomite lime, Epsom salts, blood meal...
Aug 5: tied down using pipe cleaners and paper clips.
Aug 6: adjusted LST. Lower branches are already bigger so I think I like tying plants down as a low stress way to increase yield.
Aug 8: adjusted LST but looking good. 🤠
Aug 10: released tie down
Aug 13: the plant looks awesome and the tie down has produced two main colas and several secondary colas that should work nicely. Extra yield without the delay in harvest that topping creates. 🤠. Also took off two fan leaves that were shading buds.
Aug 16: full nutrient mix including Natures Source, molasses, Superbloom, Epsom Salts, calcium citrate and pinch of kelp extract. This is a transition mix heading toward just bloom nutes soon.
This water has elevated sodium and I need to be more aware of the Cation ratios (Na, Ca, Mg,K) so the soil doesn’t get too much sodium.
Aug 27: gave it a SuperBloom, molasses, Epsom salts nutrient mix and then sprayed with Enhancer.
Pollinated two branches with Devil XXL pollen.
Aug 30: watered with Epsom salts and Big Bud. The plant didn’t grow much since the last visit and that was likely due to a mild lack of water.
Sep 3: I think the water is not helping this plant. The pH is too high on the days where the helper waters the plant, and there is too much sodium. Will leave some pHed water with some Epsom salts to see if that helps.
It’s also starting to get cool overnight and the strength of the sunlight drops quickly in the fall. This plant was started late (July 15) in part to see if it could finish in time. So far so good I guess, and it should finish blooming quickly.
Sep 10: looking good but smaller than I expected for outdoor. It might not be getting the right amount of water daily. We’ll see how she finishes.
Sep 15: watered and fed. Buds are looking nice.
Sep 18: plant is quite purple from the low overnight temps. Lower fan leaves are also discoloured.
This should have been a full sunny day but smoke from California and Oregon fires has made it quite hazy here in central Alberta. SF is at 37 N and I’m at 53 N. The fires are 1,800 km away but the haze is blocking the UV that makes the plant make THC...so climate change is affecting the THC levels in my bud...Damn, I know climate change is serious but talk about unexpected implications...
Sep 20: the plant is doing better than I thought. Purple colouring looks good and buds are maturing. There should be some good sunny days here in the next two weeks so it should finish nicely.
Sep 22: very purple but looking good. The weather for the next two weeks should be nice and sunny so this plant will finish on time. 😎
Sep 29: leaves are basically black now.
Oct 2: decided to chop but it could have gone longer. We have had some great sunny weather this fall and I wouldn’t count on it being this nice every year in early October. We’re pretty far north in Canada and I’m a bit amazed that a plant started in late June can finish nicely in early October. It’s a beautiful plant with some great colours that was an unexpected bonus. A key to getting it bigger would be to plant it well before the solstice on June 21 to take more advantage of the long daylight hours and to make sure it’s watered properly.
This plant was started very late (June 29) and was harvested Oct 2 or Day 92. It was smaller than expected and this might be due to inadequate watering. I was only inspecting it every few days and the helper was a bit forgetful about watering. With an earlier start to take advantage of the long sunlight hours around the solstice, and better tending, I’m sure this plant would get much bigger.
The plant endured some quite low overnight temperatures and turned a really nice purple. The low overnight temps may also have limited the size of the plant.
Furthermore, this was an early attempt at freeze drying and it got too dry. Need to shorten the drying cycle time I think. The dry weight is only 20% of the wet weight, but I think it should be be more like 30%. Volume wise it looks like close to a standard ounce, but the weight is low due to lack of moisture in the bud. The over dried buds are in mason jars with a small piece of wet paper towel to allow them to rehydrate and then Boveda packs. The freeze dryer works great but it’s tricky to optimize. Practice, practice practice.
The buds rehydrate easily and it takes some getting used to the look of freeze dried bud, but they look, smoke, and taste great. Need to measure dry weights after curing not right out of dryer.
