Finally, my 3rd attempt at sprouting an Auto-flower was successful!
I germinated the seed using the paper towel method and then straight into the soil, which was a combination of kelp and moss based potting soil.
The circular indentation in the soil is from the cut off bottle top used to create a humid, protective growth space for the seedling.
Unfortunately, as the 2cd photo shows, I made the mistake of companion planting in the same pot. Thinking it would help hide the Cannabis.
I can already see the difference between this Auto and my earlier planted Swazi Sativa bag seeds. She's growing quicker, with closer nodes and broader first leaves. All good signs!
I began LST early as I want to keep her as low as possible.
She continued to grow quickly. Far, far quicker than the african bag seed sativa's and her leaves really noticeably bigger indicating her Indica genetics.
Decent weather and the ability to move the pot around, following the sun, have helped her to continue exploding up and out. The first of the secondary stems is starting out. Still no no need for supplemental feeding, the large pot of nutritious soil, sun and water are doing there thing!
She seems to be loving the hot weather and the soil composition is great for holding water. She's now sending out more secondary stems and is ready to be curled around the pot rim, using LST.
I'm now beginning to worry whether planting a French Bean and Tomato plant in the same pot was a good idea or not.
Really worried that hasn't started to flower yet, given the advertised sprout to harvest was 7 weeks! Damned marketing.
LST continues around the edge of the pot, keeping her nice n' low.
Finally it's happening... what I thought were signs of pH imbalance or lack of nutrients turned out to be early signs of flowering. Still no need for supplemental nutrients. But she gets a handful of wood ash to boost Potassium and grow those flowers.
unfortunately lost the rest of the photo's I took of the baby buds.
Unfortunately a problem arose this week. The neighbour who shares the garden, and was ok with this grow, has asked me not to follow the sun around with the pot. The relatively sunny weather is doing her good, though. It looks like she'll develop 7 cola's.
As can be seen in the 2cd photo, the bean plant is dying, outcompeted by the Cannabis and Tomato.
Removed a couple of damaged leaves.
The flowers appear to be developing nicely. I've had to hide her behind my broad bean's trellis while I leave her alone for 10 days! But a post quarantine family visit is more important.
Hoping that saturating the 22l pot will keep her going while I'm away.
Still no need for supplemental feeding.
She survived the time alone. Thankfully a couple of late afternoon rain showers kept her her alive through the hot days. Buds are sparkling and fattening up really nicely and she's starting to give off a notable piney/diesel smell.
I've defoliated in preparation for harvest in the next week or two.
Pistils are starting to turn orangy red but not yet near approximately 70% of them.
Trichomes ae still clear.
As a first time grower, I'm both happy and unhappy with this strain. It was easy to grow, despite some pretty hot days followed by rain storms. However, it took 4 weeks longer than the 7 weeks advertised and only yielded 10g. It's quite likely that the following didn't help the yield; planting her in the same 22l pot as a bean and tomato plant and having to hide her away for the last 3 weeks, for security reasons, restricting the amount of sunlight she got. There was the nice surprise of a second harvest of 1g dry of even stickier buds than the first harvest.
All in all, it's ok for a first grow and the bud was worth waiting for! I'd grow her again.
