Popped this seed with the intention of making her mean, not lean! I started off in paper towel, then moved to a starter tray to get the first set developed. Next step will be straight to the 7 gallon smart pot
Forgot to grab photos of the repotting since I was out of town and hoping she was going to be alright haha. Looks like she’s okay! Cut the prop tray and straight to the 7gal where I’ll wait for the roots to take hold before doing some LST.
This week is where the fun began! First tie down, and slowly planning out where I’ll place the branches and such. Fairly light nutrient solution with added Cal-Mag to avoid deficiencies. Keeping the EC before 600 still
I’ve been slowly adding ties as she grew towards the edge. When she got to the edge, I tied around the tip and started to spiral her to the side. I’ll eventually creat a half-moon with the main stem, and connect it with the side branches to fill in the other side.
Finally caught up. I’ll be updating this journal almost daily now. As you can see in the photos, I started to LST the side branches now, and continue to tuck the larger fan leaves under the smaller branches to allow better light penetration. She recovers in about 4-10 hours when I adjust. Nice!
You’ll see that she had a lot of progress this week! I had my hands full, so I let them grow out a little and thicker up. At the end pf the week I was on my way out, but no more procrastination! Tied her all down in about 30 mins. This should be the last tie down, since I’m just starting to see pre-flowers. Let see what she looks like when we go back!
This is the first week of flowering! I was starting to wonder how much more vegging I was going to be able to handle for this girl, even with space still. This is the exact reason I use LST in my grows, haha. Nice development by the end of the week too!
Week 2 of flowering is coming along well, with little to no loss of leaves. I used to grow from personal clones that were kept for months in starter pots sometimes (oh yeah, a good root system can take a beating), so by the time I got them to flower they would be so root-bound. Pair that with absent-mindedly forgetting to water here and there while I was carrying a corp career, blah blah. Nice to see that I got it in me and erases my self-doubt XD
Anyways, now you can really start to see the shape I was going for in the earlier weeks of vegging. only up from here I hope!
Week 3 - NO MORE TYING lol. I've said that so many times I feel, but now that the bud stems are getting more rigid, I'll stop for real now... I took some side shots for you to get an idea of the stretch from the initial bud sites. They'll continue to stretch a bit, but IME when I LST I don't get the full "X2 flowering growth factor" that you usually experience with no training applied. I find this is because that growth is spread more evenly throughout the plants branches, rather than mostly to the main stalk.
Thoughts?
Week 4 Flowering - A few leaves are starting to fade here and there as she sucks nutrients from them. I wasn't able to find a pot tray large enough for this airpot, so it's been a PITA trying to keep her watered - so far nothing too drastic.
You'll notice that I continue to tuck the larger leaves that cover lower bud-sites allowing most of them to grow at the same rate.
Getting hefty!
Week 5 Flowering - She's starting to put a little focus towards Trichrome production now. while still majorly on bulking up. The fade is slowly coming in as well. little video for perspective!
Week 6 Flowering - More trichrome production now, but still a long ways to go. That's both exciting for yield, and tragic for my ADHD lol... She better look like Edwina Scissor-hands when she's done...
I gave her a good watering at the end of this week with a blend of “late bloom” nutrients. Having such a PITA of a time watering as the fabric pot is too big for the tray.
If you look at some of the photos, you’ll notice I’m basically using a party serving tray as a water retainer at the bottom since I couldn’t find anything in the stores.
I might untie the branches in the last week, and dunk the whole pot into a large tote of water and just keep it in there for the last bit.
This week I'm starting to notice a slight increase in trichrome production, as well as overall mass. I continue to have issues with keeping the soil hydrated on some days, as I'm still dialing in the new light. Even with a few hours of drought here and there, there has been minimal loss of foliage! This really has been a resilient Auto strain.
Looking back, if I compare this plant where it is now to my first auto I ever popped, you can really see an improvement! Little bit of nature, little bit of nurture XD I'm glad I kept a few seeds from that original grow, as I plan to run a re-trial and compare the results.
If she starts to puff out like some of the other strains I've had from Canuk seeds in the last 2-3 weeks, I might see how much longer I can push the plant and get a real piñata out of it haha.
This week I noticed an increase in overall mass of the colas, however I think the size of this Smartpot got the better of me. Due to the holidays coming, the soil dried out a bit, causing the plant to sacrifice a few leaves in response. Serves me right lol.
I took a peak underneath the smartpot to see how the air pruning was working. Really well, I’ll say! Mind you, it would look much better had the drought been avoided.
I did some research and found out that it’s the Peat Moss in the medium that causes the soil to become like a rock cake when dried out. This makes it extremely difficult to rehydrate, often causing the water to roll off the surface, down the sides, and straight to the bottom tray.
Mulches can reduce the drying on the surface, hold more water, and increase the time between watering. I’m looking to avoid bringing the little flies from a composting project in another part of the house over to the grow room though. Dry surfaces are helping avoid that since I don’t have any diatomaceous earth lying around.
