This is my 2nd grow and first for hydroponics. I've done alot of research but sometimes I'm just winging it so I also appreciate any input. I started off putting the seed in a cup of water for 24hrs then transferred it to a sock. I like the sock over the paper towels because it stays moist forever because the sock is much thicker. After the root from the seed was a half inch long I transferred it to a piece of sponge with a slit cut in the middle of the sponge from top to bottom. Seemed to work well. I should be using Big Grow Hydro but I'm using regular Big Grow I don't know what effect that will have.
Seems kind of small for 2 weeks. That's OK I take the fact that it's still alive at all as a success. One problem I have identified is the PH keeps creeping up so it ran for a week at 7.2 but still growth is slow. The color of the plant is dark green which may be too much nitrogen so I'm bringing the PPM down to 400. Still interesting we'll see how it goes.
This is the 21th day and the symptom is very slow growth and the leaves are dark green as well as they're stunted and malformed. I am using tap water that has been filtered. There is clearly a white residue but I don't know if it's salt. If' it's salt I don't know where the salt could come from it's filtered water....unless the carbon filter cannot remove whatever is causing the salt. For the first week of veg I did not check the PH and when I did it was shockingly high at 7.5 so I've been checking it everyday now. Everyday the PH creeps up. I am using a total of 2 TSP or 10ml of Nutrient to put me at 500ppm. So I've made some changes I've started it on the Flora Series Nutrient Program specifically made for hydroponics that was 10 days ago additionally I'm adding in just a little of the fox farm nutrient. I've also lowered the water level to the bottom of the clay maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch of the clay pebbles in the water. So I'm having fun with it....I'm thrilled it's still alive and I'm learning this is the learning curve. I have a backup plant I'm growing in soil so if it doesn't make it it's not the end of the world.
It's really growing now wow what a week and the roots have reached the water. So what I have learned is it was really growing slow at first and its because the water level wasn't high enough. The water needs to reach the clay pebbles and that enables the water to soak up to the roots of the small seedlings. That was the problem its small roots just weren't getting enough water.
The other contributing factor is for the first week I did not check the PH and it was way too high. The PH will get away from you so now I check it every morning. It's small but I'm switching to 12's today. I have to because i'm growing a soil plant in the tent with it and it's at 7 weeks of life. Because this is my first hydro and I'm not guaranteed success I'm growing a plant in soil as a back up.
It's small for it's age because of the mistakes I made in the beginning but it's growing pretty good now. I'm just thrilled It's still alive this being my first experience with hydroponics.
Wow has it grown. It's now larger than the potted plant to the right that's also 2 weeks older but they went on 12's at the same time. They're both the same strain it will be interesting to note the difference in taste and quality.
Looking good! I've done no training but it's a nice wide short plant. It's a full 3 feet wide. It was kind of late in the game but I decided to top it I think it will be better in the long run. So the top I clipped had some immature buds on it....I dried them in front of a space heater for 90 minutes and smoked them. It wasn't a full dose but I got a really nice high off it that lasted forever. Really pleasant. Also got a nice pocket microscope off of amazon. The leaves are turning brown and the leaves are dying. It's OK it's at the end of it's lifespan and I will get some killer smoke of it in a week or two. My PH is good, I've done a flush to get rid of any salts. I almost don't want to say this because I don't know if this was the cause but the timing of the leaves turning brown was the same time I ran out of GH nutrients and started using another brand and followed instructions to a "T, and I don't want to say the name because it would unfairly tarnish the name and I'm not experienced enough to be confident about the cause. I've already tried some buds. Very nice....no paranoia and inspires creativity. Very nice smoke well balanced.
