Ghost Train Haze Bag Seed Grow - Notes from Week 1
Chose one seed out of five that I found while smoking a ton of the stuff a while back. I’m in love with this strain honestly, it’s probably my number two all time favorite to smoke. Definitely not for the inexperienced or people prone to smoked-induced anxiety, this tasty baby came from a 27% THC Sativa leaning hybrid that hits heavy and hard with a euphoric, mind-blitzing Indica-like, brain meltdown of an experience.
She’s a fuck you up, slap you across the cheek kind of girl that makes you wonder if your bowl was laced with something extra as you inhale smoke from the strain the caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland was probably smoking.
I’m so excited for this grow honestly. I’m not one to go for the same strain over and over again whether it’s for a smoke or grow, but I’ll definitely be growing through all five Ghost Train Haze seeds and see if I’m lucky enough to get a male from the bunch to breed some more seeds with. They run about a 100 usd for six fem seeds (84, 85 euro approx.) and I keep seeing them being sold out in reputable banks, so I’m feeling seriously lucky already.
I have a few other strains I’m juggling already right now, so I’m not looking to grow all five Ghost Train Haze seeds at once if I can avoid it. I really want to produce more of these seeds for the future though, so I may bite the bullet and invest in a sex test for the plants so I can keep the first gender in veg while I search for a breeding partner in the remaining seeds.
Another benefit is that if I know a plant is male, I can keep it small and don’t need to worry about training it for yield since just a few pollen sacs is enough to get a huge number of seeds off a female plant. The only real consideration I’ll need to take is during his flower, when I’ll need to keep the male separate and as sealed off as possible from my main grow room.
My plan is to send the male into the flower stage a few weeks ahead of the female, since I can keep the pollen stored for a month in the fridge without issue. Once the area I keep him in before harvest is sanitized and uncontrolled pollination is a lot less likely, I’ll move the female into that same space and choose bud sites to brush the pollen on during week four of her flowering (when she’s most likely to be affected by the pollination). Spacing out the male/female flower periods like this will give me as much control as possible over which areas produce seeds while reducingthe chance that I’ll accidentally bring pollen into my main grow room.
If there’s no male then I’ll just have the time of my life with smoking the fem flower lol.
For this first grow I chose the smallest of the five seeds, because why not? Color-wise it’s got the same gorgeous tiger striping, shape, and hard shell as the other four; the only difference visually is in size.
10/21
Took the seed and placed in a paper towel that’s wet but not dripping, before putting it in a Ziploc bag. I got a new seed mat recently and it’s nice, but get’s things a little too toasty for my liking. I put down a hand towel between the seed and the mat to help protect it from getting too hot.
10/22
Lol what a little superstar. I put my Ghost Train Haze down for germination at about 10pm last night and checked on it at 10am today – and they’ve not only cracked, but stuck out their taproot too. On such a tiny seed it’s ridiculously adorable but definitely no less impressive after such a short time (compared to my Berry Bomb Auto – different diary, that took a while just to crack).
Since it’ll be a bit before I can do the genetic testing, i’ll just put the seed in a smaller pot and get the first few nodes going before testing and transferring to a second pot. If this first one ends up male I’ll keep it small and comfy till I can find a female. If this seed ends up female, I’ll eventually transfer her into a 5 or even 7 gallon fabric pot, because I want to get bud sites for smoking and seed sites to collect from.
Having the option to get more of both by making her big and strong will be ideal, and I’m willing to lose some growing space reserved for other strains or even invest in another tent/light setup just for this project since it’s so dear to my heart. I’m so freaking excited guys lol, what a great start to this thing.
10/23
No signs of the root pushing out further, but honestly since the tap root came out anyway I’ll just plant the little guy.
I put him in a gallon sized pot with Fox Farm Ocean soil to start (but I may switch to Rogue soil in the next repotting, it’s a company that happens to be local to my area anyway and it has the same stuff as Fox Farm, but with some added benefits that I’m still researching).
I actually prepped the pot yesterday after seeing the seed germinate, just mixing and fluffing up the soil with some water I’d added a tiny dash of cal/mag to, PH and checked the ppm for.
Actually, yeah. I’ll go do it now since I’m doing midweek pics and check-ins for my other diaries anyway.
Update: Planted Ghost Train Haze. I really hope it’s a little dude for this first one honestly. I love the flower this strain produces so much that it would take a load off my mind to know I’ve managed to create an access line for myself in the future too by managing to breed some seeds. There’s a decent chance the seeds I found were from a lady plant that went hermie…so we’ll see.
10/24
I decided to go ahead and try germinating another two seeds (which brings the total number of Ghost Train Haze seeds I’m working on to three). No sign yet of the first seed popping up, but I’ll give it another few days before I worry.
10/26
That first seed never showed signs of growth, so for now I’ll just keep it potted and misted while I see if I can get a marijuana miracle out of her.
The two other seeds seem pretty okay though – the middle sized seed cracked first (but then took longer to grow out the root), while the larger seed (largest of the Ghost Train Haze seeds I have) took longer to crack but had the tap root growing quick and healthy right from the start.
Hell yeah. If the seed’s start was an indicator of its health, then I’ll probably use it in the breeding pair, or maybe even just keep it as a mother plant to clone GTH from anytime I want to grow the strain.
It’s not really my style to keep a strain perpetually but when you find the one, you find the one I guess lol. Oh man, I really wonder what the rosin yield and taste would be. It’s a dope smoke, but it might knock someone out to dab the stuff.
I’m intrigued to a whole new level.
10/27
Holy Ganjatown Batman, we got a sprout out of the big seed already! I’m gonna call it GTH Biggie from now on to help keep the plants separate.
The tiny seed I first germinated still hasn’t sprouted, which is def a bummer.
Not too worried about the third one yet, I just planted it yesterday and wasn’t expecting the kind of insane growth that Biggie’s given me. Hopefully this one makes it, but if not then I’ll have to resort to germinating my last two Ghost Train Haze seeds since the only one that seems to be thriving so far out of my current three is Biggie.
Ghost Train Haze Week 2 Notes
10/28
Biggie is doing really dope and is already growing out their first set of secondary leaves. Not getting too leggy, I’d say stem height is maybe 1.5 or 2 inches tall. I have such a good feeling about this one lol.
The other seed that I just planted (the middle-sized one out of the three I’ve tried so far; the smallest unfortunately didn’t make it), is doing really well too. That taproot is pushing against the dirt rather than burrowing into it, so the root and seed is somewhat exposed. If it continues I’ll do some adjustment and help the seed reposition.
10/29
So dope – repositioning the seed last night seems to have done the trick and is now the second Ghost Train Haze seed to officially germinate.
The first and biggest of my seeds to germinate is Biggie, so this second one I’ll call Smalls. Lol.
Smalls taproot must’ve grown longer than I originally thought, because they’re already mature enough to show signs that they’re about ready to ditch the shell casing and pop up with some cotyledons.
Afternoon Update: Ghost Train Haze is straight up incredible. For the surviving seeds (2/3 to date), the vitality I’m seeing is just blowing me away. Growth is not only quick and steady once germinated; the sprouting process has been a dream too. These little guys are throwing off some serious vitality too, the growth is looking really strong and filling out nicely from the get-go.
Anyway, the main purpose of this update is to report the seed casing is off, and the cotyledons are already green and developed. They still need to open up more, but still. Amazing.
10/30
Both Biggie and Smalls are doing awesome and seem to be thriving so far. Biggie’s already doubled in size leaf-wise, and Smalls is already working on their first set of secondary leaves with the cotyledons stretched out to absorb the light.
There’s reduced curling in the cotyledons which I’m hopeful means I’m starting to dial in the watering process during the sprout phase. Still just misting twice a day and rotating the pot 2-3 times a day.
I noticed that Smalls keeps bending and lengthening a bit in search of light while I’ve moved Biggie around a few times and she really doesn’t seem to notice and just keeps growing straight and steadily.
Since Biggie doesn’t seem to care much about where I position her in the grow tent, I moved Smalls to sit more centrally under the light.
11/01
Been misting 2-3 times a day with water I added a dash of cal/mag and PH’d, and rotating pots twice a day with a continued 20/4 light cycle. I may switch to 18/6 for my next batch of strains and compare the difference.
I’m noticing that the water tends to leave a bit of nutrient burn on the leaves of some of my other strains, so I’ve been careful to avoid getting water on the leaves or wipe off the leaves after misting the dirt.
Both Ghost Train Haze seeds are still going strong and growing in solidly. Biggie is already starting to grow out the next set of leaves (the ones that should be the first set of 3/5 point leaves).
Smalls is working on the first set of secondary, and as of today the leaves have already grown to the same size as the cotyledons.
I bought some gender testing kits for the bag seed I’m growing; Ghost Train Haze included. Once Biggie and Smalls have both developed their first set of 3/5 pointed leaves, I’ll take a sample from the cotyledons and mail the test kits back to the lab to get tested.
If by some crazy chance I have one male and one female I might just leave the other two Ghost Train Haze seeds ungerminated for now, try to clone the female to get another grow going before sending the originals into flower. I’ll start with the male and get the pollen before sending the female into flower and pollinating a few areas for future seed sites.
If Biggie and Smalls end up the same gender, I’ll give one or both other seeds a try and hope for the best.
11/03
Still impressed by the rate of growth, but nothing has really happened since last post except the leaves getting bigger and Biggie’s stem getting noticeably thicker already. Just did the usual rotation/misting cycle today and yesterday before taking pics. Singing off to go post this now lol.
Ghost Train Haze Notes Week 3
11/04
Both seeds are still growing strong and getting misted with water/rotated under the light twice a day. Biggie’s still working on the first set of three-tipped leaves, and Smalls is coming in just behind with just starting the process.
I’ll probably do a gender test on these in the next day or two. I’m so curious to know what they’ll end up being lol.
11/05
Recently went up a pot size for multiple strains and the setup was starting to get a bit crowded in the tent, so I moved both Ghost Train Haze plants to their own set up.
I’m actually using an LED light I got from someone who purchased it a while back from some company called Aggressively Organic that apparently went out of business recently. It’s a bright but simple LED board with no fans, and on the plug there’s a little orange box-thing that says it pulls 40 watts from the wall. Unfortunately though, I haven’t been able to find anywhere on the internet that tells me what that translates to for my plants, so it’s a bit of a gamble.
I’m starting at about half a foot away from Biggie and Smalls, because that height was recommended for growing the plants for the original kit. I’ll check on the pair in the morning and see how they did, making adjustments based on how they respond to the light.
Another change I’m making is in how long they have access to light. In the grow tent they were chilling in previously it was a 20/4 light cycle, but with this next grow setup I want to transition to 18/6. I’m sure it would be fine to just go straight for the 18 hour schedule immediately, but just to ease the transition I’ll have them on a 19/5 schedule the rest of this week before going to 18/6 next week.
If Biggie and Smalls don’t seem to dig the Agg. Org. grow light, then I have an extra Gixxer LED light that I’ll use instead. It gives me the ability to flip between veg and bloom so I was planning to put the pair under it when they outgrow the Agg. Org. light anyway.
11/06 – Midweek Check In
So far the change in light doesn’t seem to have bothered Biggie, and if anything I think Smalls prefers it if the new leaf growth is anything to go by.
11/08
I got a bigger light for my grow tent, so I ended up switching the lights back out again lol. I don’t have enough info right now on the aggressively organic light to risk gambling the health of these two plants so I just went did the switch.
11/10 – End of Week
Both Ghost Train Haze plants are coming in really nicely and developing their second and third nodes, respectively.
Honestly they look great and I can see the little five point leaves coming in on Biggie while the three point leaves are coming in on Smalls. The stems are thickening and all the growth looks unblemished by nutrient burn from the cal/mag water spray I’m still using twice a day.
Probably in the next week or so I’ll switch from spraying to properly watering every few days.
Ghost Train Haze Week 4 Notes
A lot has been happening with lockdowns going into place and trying to prepare for some of the shortages and difficulties my area’s already starting to face going into winter, so I didn’t have the energy to write up notes for any of my strains this week to be honest lol.
A quick overview of this week – both Ghost Train Haze plants are coming in solidly, though I think Smalls (now technically bigger than Biggie lol) either needs more light or is just a more leggy pheno, because the leaves are coming in the same size and number, but Smalls seems to stretch out a bit wider and taller than strictly needed in the meantime.
Gave the two of them their first proper watering this week; misting has been going well but now that they’re getting bigger they’ll need a little more water (and soon food) to draw from.
I mailed the test kits about seven days ago, so hopefully in the next week we’ll hear back on what their genders are and I can figure out what the next step in this breeding project is from there.
Ghost Train Haze Week 5 Notes
11/18
Gave the pair a watering today (cal/mag and PH’d), seems like they’re starting to drink a bit quicker which is cool. Also received an email from the testing company saying they had received the samples and would be able to send me the gender results in the next 2-5 days. Super dope.
11/20 – midweek
Got the gender results in today! It was weirdly a blast to open up the email and finally find out whether I’m a step closer to finishing this dream project – and all purely based on chance and a roll of the dice.
When I sent in the samples I mentioned that the plant origins were from bag seed and possibly hermaphroditic in nature, and I was pleasantly surprised to see them give me a cautionary heads-up.
They mentioned it would be a good idea to continue to monitor the plants, especially since herms are genetically female – meaning that despite their physical transformation, their DNA chromosomes remain female (XX chromosomes).
Essentially, they could hermie out on me if the mother went hermie, because that trait was passed down to the seeds. Since I’m just a home grower and the seeds are purely for my own supply, I’m personally fine with continuing this process of breeding for seeds that may go hermie so I can keep a line of access without keeping mother plants and cloning or going with the feminized seeds route.
In my mind, it would be pretty uncool to make seeds with hermie origins with the intent of buying or selling to others as it has so few benefits and can cause a lot of harm to a growers crop. Just saying lol.
Anyways, on to the dope news – I got my ideal situation, in a sense. Biggie, my favorite pheno of the two Ghost Train Haze seeds I’m currently growing, is male.
Smalls, who’s behind Biggie in development by about a week and has ended up leggier, sparser, and overall a bit less desirable for me unfortunatey, is female.
Worst case scenario, although Smalls might not be quite as picture perfect as Biggie is looking right now, I have a male and female to breed with right off the bat which is pretty freaking dope.
I’ll keep Biggie on an 18/6 light schedule and not do any training to keep him small until it’s time to switch him to flower, at which the only difference I’ll really be making is doing a 12/12 light schedule.
Smalls is not my ideal partner for Biggie but still my one and only female, so I’ll start doing some training to maximize her bud sites while I start one or both of my remaining two seeds in the hopes of a female pheno popping up that appeals to me more.
Regardless of whether some of her bud sites are pollinized as a last resort or not, I’m definitely not missing out on the chance to smoke some Ghost Train Haze lol.
11/21
Went ahead and topped Smalls today. Went well, was quick and easy, then gave her watering. Biggie got nothing.
11/23
There’s only about an inch’s difference in height between Biggie and Smalls, but visually they just look so different it’s a little weird.
Biggie’s looking a little like a baby christmas tree right now with the way he’s filling out, While Smalls is still looking…like the Charlie brown christmas tree to be honest. I’m still glad to have a female out of the bunch worst case scenario, but she’s got some weird mutation or crazy leggy pheno going on or something. Iit’s like gravity pulls down on her too much, and instead of reaching up towards the sky she just sticks straight out.
The increased light seems to have helped curb the lengthening between the nodes she had going on for a week or two there, and I think she may do a lot better in a reflective grow tent with some extra attention paid to training. May try topping and mainlining.
Ghost Train Haze Week 6 Notes
11/25
I have some fresh space to try germinating and growing my other two Ghost Train Haze seeds, but I’m dying to pop another strain called Sweet Peach. I was originally going to grow Sweet Peach before taking on the Ghost Train Haze project, but it took like two and a half months for the seeds to arrive so I ended up moving on.
I’m probably going to stick with Ghost Train Haze until I know the gender of the last two seeds at my disposal and just replace one of the other strains with Sweet Peach when the time comes for the chop.
11/27
Gave the Ghost Train Haze plants a watering with food today. Accidentally broke my PH meter so I used the chemical that changes color when it comes in contact with liquid depending on its PH. Can’t remember the name of it, but it’s a solid backup until I order a new one.
11/29
Topped Smalls today, we’ll see how she does with that. She’s still really leggy no matter how much light I give her, meanwhile I pushed Biggie further away to curb some of his growth speed. Coming in really gorgeous and bushy – which unfortunately, I’ll probably need to do something about. Maybe mainline or lollipop.
12/01
Went ahead and lollipopped Biggie today and it totally crushed me lol. I hated cutting off so much growth and healthy vegetation, but I honestly don’t need much at all to have the pollen I need for breeding.
I know for sure that even if the last two seeds at my disposal end up male as well, I won’t be using Smalls for breeding more seeds. The legginess on her is insane and it takes major blasting of light to curb it. Unfortunately it isn’t just in the stem, it’s the branches too – there’s several inches between all the nodes except the ones at the very top.
Went with cal/mag watering today while they recover from the day’s training.
Ghost Train Haze Week 7 Notes
**Midweek check in**
I took the new growth branches off of biggie today, who seems to have adjusted to the lollipopping I did last week pretty well. I left the fan leaves on for now but as he gets taller I’ll have to start taking them off too.
As for smalls, it looks like she’s taken to the topping I did last week And I now have two new main colors in addition to the E side branch style coolers that were forming at the same time. The legginess is still pretty severe even with an intense amount of light being shot her way. She’s very easily stressed by heat or water (on that note, she also drinks quite a bit more than Biggie) and she grows leggy under the slightest lessening of light, with 2-3 inches between mature nodes no matter I try to curb it.
I have two other plants that I plan on throwing into flower soon and I think that when I do I’m gonna go ahead and put smalls in the mix as well. With how leggy she has a tendency to get I’m a bit worried about how much she’s going to stretch out during the flower phase so I honestly don’t want her to get too much bigger at this point before putting her in flower anyway. I
I definitely won’t be breeding this pheno unfortunately - the work required to deal with her lack of bud sites is not really paying off as far as I’ve been able to see, so I’m just gonna take what little amount of bud I can get from her and enjoy a little batch of Ghost Train Haze as a treat I’m while I work on the last two seeds in my collection.
**End of week notes**
Biggie and Smalls are both doing really well right now. Biggie has not slow down on growth whatsoever despite the lollipopping I did, and I actually ended up having to take off the lowest set of fan leaves yesterday because of the unimpeded growth already occurring at the top where I left leaves behind.
Smalls legginess hasn’t decreased but I think topping may be a good solution in the future for other phenos like hers that I stumble on. I’m debating on how to move forward exactly with the shape and training of smalls because of the odd spacing of nodes even on her branches.
There’s nodes on the ends of each of the branches about 2 to 3 if you don’t count the main color/tip of the branch so to speak, but after those first initial nodes I don’t see others being produced. On some branches I’m seeing two or 3 inches and still no sign of the next node popping up.
I can’t say that I’m surprised or that this is new information, but I can admit I was hoping that it might change or develop in a way that I might figure out how to work with. Since that hasn’t happened I’m just gonna have to start taking the training seriously now even if I won’t be breeding her, I want to see if I can at least get as much out of her as I can when I flip her in about 1 to 2 weeks.
I’ve got a feeling she’ll be the type to be very tall and very stretchy so I think what’s important is topping her as much as possible right now. She’s already getting a lot of light the way she would’ve if I needed to LST her but it hasn’t been necessary due to the sheer amount of spacing between branches and nodes.
@ThrashedTV_BakedByGlaze, I'll be honest i've definitely thought about it lmao, could be a really fun experiment since conditions and temp mostly work pretty well together
