@OldDrGreen, Hi there! It's our internal team are the ones who judge. The initial criteria is a well grown plant with a good quality picture. The rest is up to the team to select. There always be some subjectivity here but we try our best to avoid it. Have a great day!
@OldDrGreen, It isn't rigged persay, although users claiming judges are giving out pre-determined results in exchange for various things is a regular assertion. This usually happens when they take someone from the top of the leaderboard and presume they are a good cultivator and let them judge because they hang around the site, really all it is.
This topic comes up so often that I think it has been beat to death at this point.
(1) You gotta understand that if you set up your own WiFi at the house, you're more tech enabled than most of the GD team. Don't expect them to come up with a fair algorithm to get from 200 to X entries to ACTUALLY look at by hand. When they share their algorithm steps, each step has massive pitfalls. Like using word count or image count, that alone has ruined dozens of competitions while top 500 users dump raw CSV files into their text boxes and max out image uploads. I have offered my help free of charge in designing an algorithm, even offering to remove myself from entrants in perpetuity if they decide to keep the algorithm private. They seem to be more in fire brigade mode keeping the site running, keeping ad money coming in, while interns try to make their mark on site updates. Nothing deeper than that, takes 4+weeks to get a new brand added to their catalog internally. Took them weeks to add a strain for a top 2 advertiser on here. As far as the algorithm goes, I finally just ended the conversation with a book recommendation for them to use as a starting point
(2) If your crop is coming above 25% THC/A and 2% or higher terps, you're 10000000% growing better than the judges. This is not a hard mark to hit these days.... There are a number of folks on here with cult followings for literature, content creators, breeders, even just chuckers, that are hands down more skilled in every facet of this topic than the judges. Like I know a handful of famous folks with hella-clout, that have profiles on here. Just know that out of 10 random profiles selected from this site, at least 1 of them is going to be well past the judges in skill.
Naturally, we are gonna see boof McLarfLarf in the winners podium given these two situations. That, and for some reason, the GD team nuts themselves when they see a spotlight effect iphone photo of a 1 ft tall autoflower plant in coco but that is my personal observation
@ATLien415, True, you offered us your algo and it is one of the options which. And thanks for dedicating your time to this. ๐ Since we are in the Photo of the Month section - whats wrong with the winners here? The reality is - there are many really nice pictures and it's really hard to choose the ones that would be accepted by everyone since the thing is quite subjective. But we do our best!
