When you have 4 plants under a 650w light in a 4x4, do those 4 plants take more energy from the light than just 2 would? in other words will 2 plants use light more effective and efficient than 4 plants in the same area? or it does not make a difference?

Yes four plants under 650watts will do much better then 2. Veg times are a big factor.. longer veg times= bigger plants. Of course there is a difference between 2 and 4 plants.. It could be double the output.. You could also get a comparable output form 2 with a longer veg time. If you were thinking in terms of timing and energy costs.. It's far more efficient to run 4 plants and flip them @ 5-6 weeks.

Yes and no. 2 plants may use the light more efficiently because they are closer to the center of the coverage area and receiving the proper ppfd. This advantage is minimal though, as you can adjust your light height down, giving them more ppfd. The only issue is if you lose coverage by lowering the light too much. Plants may compete for light though if they're close together. I originally did 4 plants in my tent and it got so crowded I went with just 2 this time. I'm expecting 25% less yield, but a much better final product. Hope this helps you a bit!

Hi Growie, this will depend on the PPFD and coverage of your light, looks like you have a bar and a normal from Mars they usually have the PPFD map and coverage advise from them. by the looks of your light setup i think you should be alright for the 4 plants on your 4x4 you have good coverage for it. happy growing
