What happens is your medium starts losing oxygen down at the roots so it smothers to death, it doesn't drown. Roots need oxygen to breathe. So, when my planters start to dry at the top and inch or 2 down even if the planter is still feeling heavy, they get some water. Enough just to wet everything up again. As long as you let those planters dry an inch or to down from the top you are not over watering. Cheers
