Using pollen from hermaphrodite plants will breed hermaphroditic seeds, due to the genetic dominance of hermaphroditic genes.
Breeding should only ever be done using pure males or pure females.
Picking male flowers once they develop a darkish line along the seam from which they will open, will give you male flowers with viable pollen.
Picking individual "pods" is quite easy and in a day or two you will become expert at predicting the right time to pick them.
Place them in a ceramic or stainless steel bowl, which prevents the pollen sticking, and they will open in 1-3 days and release the pollen.
Pollen can be mixed half and half with corn flour if you only have a small amount of pollen and need to extend it, as it only takes one pollen grain to fertilize the female calyx. Pollination is completed about 30 minutes after the pollen lands on the pistil. Only flowers full of fresh white pistils should be chosen for pollination.
Using a very small paint brush is the best way to transfer the pollen, it sticks to Q-Tips like glue.
Seeds take roughly 5 weeks to mature and the plant needs good hydration during this time for proper seed development.
Hope this helps, Organoman.
