I'm sure they're still I'm not sure they're dead ..
the roots are fine, do I have to do something?

Take one out and investigate a bit. A pic of a single one closeup on a plane surface would help. If they are alive it can't be a good thing.

You sure they are worms?
Kinda look like flakes of scum to me.
Try taking them out and seeing if they hold their shape.
