fertilizer is similar, but not exactly, like prescription drugs. Generics Rx are molecularly exactly the same as teh name brand, more exponsive drugs. Fertilizers that contain the same ingredients are no different in this respect. there is not "top shelf" ammonium nitrate. it is eithe rmolecularly ammonium nitrate or it is not. no leeway here.
so, fertilizer is made of a pool of possible ingredients. These ingredients are commodities. if there is any quality difference it is 100% incompetence and malfeasence of the manufacturer.
soil nutes and those that come without guaranteed analysis labels are a whole other animal. quality of the prodcution will impact consistency of the product... it's different because it's vertually impossible to know what's in them at what concentration, lol.. just a wide ranging guess with huge volatility.
if hydro/soilless, don't over spend. it won't make anything better. either it gives teh same ppms of n/p/k/ca/mg/s and has all the trace elements or it does not... price and brand name are irrelevant to this evaluation.
