There are no short cuts! You will need lots of space, lots of time and lots of dedication. "Pheno hunting" involves growing many plants of the same strain in the quest of finding that "one special" example. This may not be readily obvious unless you grow between (at least) 20 and 50 plants of each strain.......preferably 100-200! Some things to look for would include vigor, structure, nutrient efficiency, ease of cultivation, strength, leaf responsiveness, training resilience, flowering induction, flowering speed, flowering development, flower structure, trichome production, potency, overalll effect, disease resistance, pest resistance............the qualities to look for are only limited by your imagination. It involves taking cuttings from each plant before the final outcomes are known, then persevering with only the cuttings from the most desirable mother plants. Unless you are a serious grower with huge expectations and a defined goal to reach, the average home hobby grower is better off just growing random seeds as offered by the best breeders in the industry, who should have done this work for you already!

vigrous, tastey, potent ("enough" - important but you can alwys just roll up 10% more weed if slightly on low side, lol).... does it have good traits? was it easy to grow? these are simple observations you make and you weigh them relative to what is important to you... although regardless of opinion, some traits can't be ignored. no reason to breed some plant with an nesoteric fertilization need, for example.. or that grows slower than molasses.. i don't care how good other qualities are. you probably aren't a commercial op, so i doubt youd have the time, resources and space to cross breed several times over to extract some trait from a difficult plant without the bad stuff tagging along. Keep it simple for home breeding. in case anything i said overlaps with any other answer... i totally copied and pasted.. LOL.. i mean how could answers to the same question overlap? seems totally improbable. Bwhahaha.

Agree with mouse. How the hell are you a master without a diary an so many likes? You have a go at mouse for answering a question correctly just to get points for the grower comp yet you aren't playing a fair game either. At least mouse had something of value to offer. @berrysweethigh hypocrite

What organoman and mouse said is sound advice. To do it you need an end goal of what you want and a lot of space and time to do it in. It's easier to look for the traits you want through various breeders.

Funny how, we can't get threw one question without someone bitching and moaning about how someone stole an answer, the tried and true, I'm right, your wrong or just general whaa whaa whaa. Every time I check the questions section I'm reminded why I haven't stopped by in a while.

Berry thats not very berrysweet of you lol. When i answered this question no one else had answered it. I take time to type on a mobile browser and i open all questions in tabs at the same time. So its highly likely they answered when I was typing or looking at other questions. If Oman said the same stuff good on him, its not bad to have the same opinion as others it gives confirmation to what the answer could be. Hell maybe we are both wrong. But there is no copy n pasting between our answers. Fyi: there are other questions not linked to this contest that you seem to avoid like a plague, for a new user to have a strong grasp of the contests and to farm likes you keep coming off as a troll account. Maybe you should quote your mantra .. smoke indicas to accept things you cant? Or better yet, show us your grows..

Pheno hunting requires a lot of seeds, space and time. You essentially grow a butt ton of plants and start culling the ones that are not growing well, then you move into veg, does it have the structure you want, then into flower does it have the smells and buds you want. You can do it on a smaller scale with around 5-10 plants but its not the same thing. With out a clear vision in mind you can easily get lost. Most hobby growers like ourselves will grow out a 5 pack n clone out the one they like best, in essence a mini pheno hunt. Some fun mutations may happen in the process of a 100-500+ pheno hunt. And then it becomes a new strain. Or something the breeders use in their programs. Good Luck!
