I agree with not topping outdoor plants. there's no variance in light intensity from top to bottom or even from the side, so there's no reason to do it. LST is plenty good enough. Spread it out as best you can.
For future reference, you want to top after it develops 6-7 nodes. That's an old concept that doesn't just apply to marijuana plants. I also don't think it's a high risk relative to 1-10 home plants, so topping before that point likely won't have negative repercussions, but if you do it for a large enough number plants over time, you may run into a negative repercussion of an early topping, to put it in perspective.
