Defoliation and light penetration

I understand it’s important for your plants to have many leaves to soak in as much light as possible and for co2 consumption, but at what point is it enough? I have this 2 x 4 and 300w light full blast and I need to max light penetration in this sog. What % of fan leaves can go??

Any condensation? probably fine, if not. Why do you have a hankering to remove leaves? needless fiddling does not equal sophistication. C is the backbone to nearly every single molecule needed for growth. You can never have too much, lol, not quite true, but good enough. The plant has mechanisms to shed leaves. If it isn't shedding leaves and you aren't worried about disease vectors, all is fine. leave it alone. less is more :P light pentration should be fine if you haven't overcrowded the canopy. ATP, the primary product of photosynthesis is highly mobile. Apical dominance is the force behind why it is disproportionately used by bud sites and growth that is higher up on the plant or higher up on a single branch. This stuff flows through the phloem at all times. Access to it is never a matter of 'where is the light hitting'. For the last couple years i've been purposely leaving leaves shielding bud sites just to prove a point. they turn out exactly like any other bud site of similar 'dominance' on the plant -- apples to apples comparison. You are better served not overcrowding the canopy and light pentration occurs without any effort and no holee in canopy as far as absorbing photons. Shileded leaves are lungs, storage facilities and production plants.. even if not receiving much light they are value-added. Don't let anyone say differently.

Hey millerman, maybe this tutorial will help you:https://www.growweedeasy.com/nebulas-super-simple-3-step-defoliation-tutorial I harvest around 1,5-2.0 g/watt with this one for years. Would love 01101101… tell us what g/watt he gets with his no defoliation. Everyone who has a full canopy and is not defoliating/lollipopping will have only a couple of good developed top buds, the rest will be larvy and pale. If you are not into making concentrates you really waste the plants energy here. And its no bro science there are several studies about this subject proving that defoliation and pruning pays off when it comes to quantity and oil content, not just with cannabis but with most crops, its about the relation between source (leaf) and sink (flower). If you feed your plants consistently there is no need for nutrient depots that take energy itself to be hold by the plant and shade other parts of the plant that are more efficient. When it comes to photosynthesis, fan leaves (shade leafs) are not as efficient and dont have as many stomata as the smaller sun leaves. The one negativ aspects about defoliation is that it stresses the plant. From minor defoliations it takes the plant a couple of hours to bounce back to full production, with bigger interventions it can take up to 3 days. I like to raise humidity a bit for a few hours after defoliation to reduce stress. After week 3 of flower you only should do small defoliation if needed, when budsites are shaded or leafs lay on top of each other leading to condensation what could result in mold issues. During the weeks of bulking 4-7 its important not to stress as much. There are people who like to schwazz away every fan leav, wouldn’t recommend this especially if you are not familiar with the phenos you run. It’s always good to have some indicator leaves left showing if there are some deficiency’s going on in my opinion

just make sure that theres still coverage so that light doesnt touch the bottom as much as possible but i also make sure the bud sites are receiving light. similiarly to leaf tucking. no idea if its bro science or not but i do know that larf is caused by lack of light. ill keep lower leafs and let the bud sites rise so that theyre still recieving full coverage but mot blocking sites its also wild that the plant will almost continually bush out again even after stripping them as long as they arent flowering or too far into flowering stage. experiment and do what you

to my opinion as long as you can assure a nice air flow,(according to what i see, it feel pretty good) a lower fan leaves that only receive 150ppfd from the shade of top grow is still participate to the photosynthesis process. did nt look that any plant fight to get light so i don t feel any need to defoliate more... any useless leaf will naturally fadding.
