I was wondering where the really smelly varieties went? Nowadays everything is just lemony, sweet or earthy. About 15 years ago there were good sulfur and vomit-smelling varieties. Where did they go? I haven't come across them to this day. I would like to finally find them.

Could throw up in a towel and point a fan at it. i'm not a fan of the rotting smell or puke, but i definitely think something is getting lost trying to make these esoteric, singular aroma plants.. so what if it smells like cherry pie if it doesn't taste like cherry pie. They are focusing way too much on superficial traits. Same reason the rose lost its smell. Breeders catering to the whims of the lowest common denominator.... with no future outlook beyond short-term profits of monopoly money.

To jump on daddy's comment, I can personally vouch for Compound Genetics on this conversation. This is hard to admit because Irene is basically the flower of my childhood but The Menthol is more Irene than Irene ever was. With the way they hunt, they consistently reach the unicorns in their genetic pools. Purely anecdotal here but pretty much anything they touch with The Menthol ends up scratching that nostalgic good-oldschool-dank itch. 👽

You can get lucky. I grew something that smelled like the cat piss stuff back in 2018 that was from seeds in a wedding cake eigth. In 2023 a buddy of mine found me some Grease Monkey clones...wow! It took me back to the 90's; nasty smelling, worse than my armpit on a hot day..ja! The taste was skunk funky chronic and then it hit slow...half an hour into it, I was like it's still hitting. I have some seeds that came out of that plant. Might grow it this year. The one breeder I keep on going back to that has a good variety is Equilibrium Genetics. They have something called Cheetah Piss, they also got some afghani seeds that look legit. Check them out if you have the time. This year I will be growing out 8 regular seeds I was given that were obtained in Belize. I'm guessing Sativa-ish dominant landrace genetics from Central America should taste different. The seeds look slightly different then all my other seeds. Don't give up hope. The strains are there and even the new smokers are starting to venture out. A friend told me that my outdoor organic herb hits stronger than store stuff and smells different. She liked it, but was intrigued that it didn't really look or smell like store bought weed. Also, the quality from personal grows is incomparable...my weed practically makes finger hash while you break it up. The flavor profile expands when you grow outdoor organic. Just my 2 cents.

Find some good Clones. i havent found anything strong smelling in anyway in seed form for a long time. Compound Genetics has some really nasty stanky genetics that i have personally grown and can vouch for. My goofiez Clone that ive kept around for the past year is some of the nasty funk. burns your nose when you open the jar. and the reason ive kept it around it because it stands out from everything else that ive had come my way. the market moved from the nasty funk from 15-20 years ago to fruity and sweet smelling cultivars and its just increased with that. people were so used to weed being stinky that people were amazed when good smelling weed was coming around and this only intensified as everything turned legal and started moving in that direction. it went from old heads and people who were into that funky to everyone and their grandma partaking in the legal market and people werent wanting that nasty skunky funky herb that burns your nose. i feel like in another 10 years it will even out, as long as we dont over pollute the gene pool with everything candy and

Most folks would agree that due to prohibition and (what we now know as the beginning of the Cookies-era aka the exotic-hybrid-era) the genetic pool has been stressed in cannabis. Namely, it has been optimized by black market growers with trivial understanding of cannabis, chasing THC only. In this time most would agree we lost our true skunks/roadkill/cat piss buds. I know exactly what you're talking about. Chasing that original dank/skunk is what has led me to procuring every Irene cut and seed I've ever come across, as I've spent quite some time in the South with THE real one. I've used cannabis for decades and hands-down the firest and hardest hitting flower I've ever had in my life was 11% THC licensed cut of Pink RuntZ at 5% terpenes and a smothering of other cannabinoids. Fact of the matter is, that is gonna get you more medicated than a gram of THC straight to the veins would..... Not sure what to tell you, there are many of us in your shoes. I personally wouldn't throw the Cookies-era a life preserver if it fell overboard. Some things in my circles I hear about a lot on this topic are dogshit (search dogshit csi humboldt), the real duck confit (she no longer has it IIRC so good luck finding someone trustworthy with it), and I've even heard of Badu (from cookies) hitting those notes. There are old heads doing research in this area and they are finding some crazy stuff. For example, same cultivar two phenos displaying congruent terpene profiles, yet having distinct smells! What they've been seeing is a lot of the older skunk smells are in fact dead, dead because of low-education in this space and people chasing terpenes themselves rather than esters and alcohols (where the skunk is from mostly). Just stay tuned. Most of the old heads are on this exact same problem right now. Throw out the last 20 years of seeds and lets get the good dank back, half the stuff at the dispos these days hits like air. zzz

lol gross. I grew out a RQS Fast Eddy years ago outdoors and it was the stinkiest strain I ever grew. pure skunk and it just got stronger and stronger the more I let it grow. But not vomit. or cat piss, not something I aim for. I would also think maybe the vomit smell could have been in part to bad processing or contamination. Or they phazed it out as the smell was not pleasant, as I do remember the vomit stuff, think it came from some of the shunk/cheese crosses when sour was a big thing, mostly sativa stuff according to my friend.
