Stuck Seed Shell?

SpinachMonster19
SpinachMonster19started grow question 12d ago
M2 has a stuck seed shell that she is struggling against, I’m guessing that is what took her so long to break the surface. Do you think she will be fine? I’m nervous to go in for surgery considering she’s survived till now…

Hey there that’s a great question I don’t think I have seen that asked here before Yes you can do surgery and Ty and get the shell off but that has so many risk like damage or giving it different viruses from contact who knows where your hands go throughout a day I know a simple an easy trick to get the shell off If you get a spray bottle or a water dropper just something you can get single drops of water to come out of You then drop or spray a couple drops of water on the shell that won’t come off For shells that are really stuck on there I will keep putting a couple drops on it every few hours for a day or so that should rehidrate the shell and the membrane underneath and help it slip out of the shell Also keep it mind it is completely fine and normal that the seedling pops a few inches out if the soil b4 the shell comes off. As long as the shell comes off by the end off week 1 of sprouting out of the soil it should not damage the plant Now if you leave the shell stuck on there for over a week it can cause stunted growth for a few weeks and even kill it sometimes if it doesn’t come off at all

Your grow medium looks very wet, possible chance of drowning the root. Yes you can do surgery to remove the shell but be careful. Best bet would be to soften the shell and let it fight it off, humidity dome would help do this but as your medium is so wet it's got more chance of fucking it up doing it that way. Try a few drops of water on rhe shell and see if that helps.

Just had a seed need surgery. Don't be nervous, just be careful. Sometimes things get stuck. Sometimes water works. Sometimes it doesn't. Had to remove the seed shell and a rotting cotyledon. She is now alive. Would not have made it without the surgery. Titanium toothpick for instrument

You can leave her for another day to see if she pops it off herself, but if it’s still clinging on, you can gently help her out: Drop a bit of Luke warm water on the seed cap to soften it , wait 15–20 min, then carefully nudge it off with clean fingers or tweezers Don’t force it,just roll or wiggle it gently, done the same today If she’s green underneath, she’ll bounce back fast. Good luck! 🤞🍀❤️

Seems very wet. I don't think surgery is necessary.... more or like ever.
