Paper towel method: do germinated seeds need immediate light when placed into soil? Or can the lights first go on when they have broken soil?

No light is needed while the seed is still under the soil, but once it sprouts, it needs light to start growing properly. If you're not sure exactly when it will pop, it's a good idea to keep your lights on at a low to moderate intensity to be ready when it does. Better to be safe than have a stretchy seedling!

660nm, a wavelength within the red light spectrum, is known to promote seed germination. The initial spark to begin the process. Seed will hold enough juice until it has its first set of true leaves, then it will start to harvest light, Don't need light away but it does help with warmth, most of the time with paper towel method the tail is out but the shell I still on, tricky part is making sure the humidity stays high enough until the shell is shed, light can often dry out the seed before it sheds its shell then you will need to perform shell seed surgery if she uses all her juice and still hasn't popped. Soon as thay seed sheds its shell and you see any green, its time to drop humidity asap. Plant need that 0.04% co2 to photosynthesize, not 80% RH% +.
