To top or not to top?

Topping at this stage? How long will take to recover befor stwiching to 12/12? I am thinking about topping above 3. or 4. Node or if I should let her be, give her a defoliaten (what would you remove?) and flip to flower in 3-4 days? Thanks for your thoughts & happy growing!

I generally recommend topping only after the fifth node, because I feel the plant isn’t strong enough before that point. I also top autoflowers, since in my experience it helps prevent mold. When I don’t top, I usually end up with one large main cola — and that’s exactly the part most prone to mold. Topping doesn’t just split the main cola; it also encourages the side branches to grow more vigorously, leading to several big colas and a more balanced canopy. Feel free to check out my grow diaries to see how I do it. Keep in mind: topping is always a form of stress for the plant, and every strain reacts differently. That’s why it’s important to ease into it and observe how your plant responds. After topping, they typically need around 3 to 4 days to recover. Only then should you consider flipping to flower. I personally keep my plants in veg for about 4 to 5 weeks before initiating the flowering stage. But you can also top now — after the fifth node — then wait another 3 to 4 days before switching to 12/12. Or wait even a bit longer if you like. The great thing about growing is: the one true rule of growing is that there are no hard rules. As for defoliation: I usually start around week three and then do a bit here and there as needed. You can remove a few large fan leaves to open things up, but don’t go overboard — the plant still needs enough foliage to thrive.

You're at a classic grower’s crossroads—whether to top now or flip soon. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide: Topping Considerations Topping above node 3 or 4 is ideal if your plant is still in vegetative mode and has enough vigor. After topping, recovery time is typically 4–7 days, depending on strain and health. This encourages a bushier plant with multiple colas, great for even canopies under light. If you top now, you'll need to delay the 12/12 flip by at least a week, preferably 10 days for optimal recovery and regrowth. Flipping Now Without Topping If your plant is already healthy, well-branched, and hitting your size targets: You can defoliate instead, focusing on removing: Large fan leaves blocking light to lower nodes Inner growth that won’t reach canopy This sets the plant up for better light penetration during flower stretch. Which to Choose? If you want to maximize yields and have time: Top now, recover, then flip. If space is limited or you're on a tight timeline: Skip topping, defoliate lightly, and flip in 3–4 days.

Topping or LST to develop a canopy that covers the width of your tent is essential. If you top and defoliate it could take about a week to recover and show a fast growth pattern again. If you LST and do a minor defoliation it will take no time to recover. Whatever you decide to do just remember when you flip to flower your plants will double in size, you’ll need about 12-15 inches of distance from your light to successfully grow out to maturity. If you allow your plants to grow into the light you’ll have issues like mold and foxtailing.
