Everyone has their own technique. I water thoroughly (close to allowing some water run out of the bottom, or letting a little run out). Then I wait until the soil mostly dries out. I stick my finger (at least one knuckle deep) in the soil and feel the soil, if it is pretty much dry and the leaves have started to droop a bit, I water.
It is difficult to prescribe a specific amount of water because the size of the plant (bigger plants use more water), size of the pot (smaller pots dry out faster, type of soil, temperature (higher temperature means faster evaporation), humidity (lower humidity means faster evaporation, etc. all impact water demand.
Watering thoroughly encourages roots to grow deep. Allowing the soil to dry a bit prevents roots from rotting and molds developing, as well as allowing the roots to have access to needed oxygen.
Hope this helps, happy growing!
