Not sure on the damage, but new growth seems fine-ish. Sounds like you don't adhere to proper watering habits...
1) fully saturate -- this should never cause a problem. In soil, a little runoff is fine, but minimize it so you don't leach off the nutes you paid for in the soil. The only time you want some excess runoff with soil is if you need to dilute the medium's concentration. You don't choose the volume of fwater but you can learn it retroactively.
2) wait for appropriate dryback -- this has some leeway but early on i'd suggest sticking to a good wet dry cycle. Dependong on water capacity, it'll look different, but it'll always feel the same if you go by weight. Coco-base you probably irrigate when the top layer starts to change color. With a higher water-capacity soil, you wait for top 1" to dry (less in starter/smaller pots).
Above all, don't let them wilt, that's waiting too long. If you want to irrigate more often later on, that can be an option in certain cicrcumstances, but yyou still want some minimum loss of weight to occur so as not to overwater (frequency not volume). If you wait for the samem lose of weight, it'll require a similar volume of water each time.
Review - Use as much water as it takes to get the job done. Wait for appropriate dryback and repeat. Neitheer is a top-down choice. give what is necessary to accomplish task and react to a physical observation. Thinking is not required.
