The calyxes are fat, so trust those trichomes. Scope multiple locations... react to the amount of amber / cloudy trichomes you want to see.
some plants don't show amber until it's too late. It won't be common, but can happen. If you see a fat, ripened plant that seems stubborn but all other observations say it is done, go ahead and harvest.
I had a plant that didn't show much amber and unfortunately one of them was harvested a bit too late.. the preflowers, which are older, show the most distinct issues... hollow, purple, and don't taste that great. The rest of the buds are luckily fine, but as i break it up i toss the preflowers into ashtray and joints taste better. Had i waited any longer, it would have started to effect the smoke.
so, if it's looking done and it's been a week or more, there's a chance it just won't amber up like you expect. The pistils, fattness of clayxes and density of nugs can help decide if trichomes don't do as they should.
