ABA is the hormone that keeps it dormant, gibberellin is hormone that promotes seed germination. Gibberellin application can break the dormancy of old dud seeds. Needs to be mixed with few drops of 90+% alcohol and mixed to specific concentration. I'm not sure what the ppm is for seeds but to induce plant response roughly 2-300ppm. I'll say no more as there are people in the community who get animated whenever PGRS are mentioned as if it's an illegal drug trade. Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs) are a broad category that includes both naturally occurring compounds (phytohormones) and artificially manufactured, synthetic substances. Stick to phytohormones and you are fine. But there needs to be a clear distinction. All naturally occuring plant hormones are phytohormones. So for anyone to say you should not use them, tis funny. As every living plant consists of naturally occuring phytohormones. The specific spectral ratio you apply will dictate the hormonal balance of a plant. Synthetic pgrs are what you stay away from and are mostly illegal in alot of places.

I do not understand the image to the question or some of your wording. Older seeds sometimes need a bit of a soak, being gentle is key and keeping the environment sterile is also good as its going to take it longer to germinate. be it the medium, containers, paper towels exct. send em through a pressure cooker or use checmails like peroxide or something.

A seed can last a very long time and you also said been stored so I guess been stored properly. So just soak them 12 hr then on to damp paper towel, keep in a warm/humid dark place until they show there ready to plant.

You can soak for a while using 3% hydrogen peroxide. You’d have to google how long I can’t remember. You can also use a fine grit sand paper and scuff the edges. I prefer the sand paper method, then I soak for 8 hours in RO water, then do the paper towel method. Keep in mind even if you get them to germinate, they may not grow properly. I’m like a 75-80% success rate of healthy plants with old beans.

I find the "paper towel" method the best for older seeds and plant them as soon as they split open.........do not wait until the tap root emerges if you can. Otherwise, planting them in 2 inch Rockwool cubes works well too..........keep moist but not wet. I have found scuffing seeds with fine sandpaper does not help or make any noticable difference. Squeezing them "like a pimple" will most likely kill them completely! Once planted, watering with quarter to half strength kelp extract "fertilizer" helps them to get going.
