hey buddy so and this is just my humble opinion please follow along what your gut tells you too :)
Short answer
No — when topping up between reservoir changes, you usually add water only, not nutrients.
But you must watch EC and plant behavior to decide.
The correct way to think about it (DWC logic)
In DWC, plants don’t “drink nutrients” and water at the same rate.
They either:
1. Drink more water than nutrients → EC goes up
2. Drink more nutrients than water → EC goes down
3. Drink both evenly → EC stays stable
This is why EC trend matters more than the number itself.
What to do in practice
âś… If EC is rising
• Plants are drinking mostly water
• Top up with plain, pH-adjusted water
• Do not add nutrients
This is the most common situation after week 3–4 when plants get big.
⚠️ If EC is dropping
• Plants are consuming nutrients faster than water
• You can top up with a very light nutrient solution
• Aim for ~0.2–0.3 EC below your target EC, not full strength
Example:
If your target is EC 1.2, top up at EC 0.9–1.0
❌ Never do this
• Don’t top up with full-strength nutrients
• Don’t “chase EC” aggressively
• Don’t ignore pH drift
That’s how salt buildup and root stress happen.
Weekly res change still matters
Your weekly full reservoir change is correct and important, especially in recirculating DWC.
That reset:
• Prevents nutrient imbalance
• Clears salt accumulation
• Keeps oxygenation efficient
Pro tip (advanced but simple)
If EC stays stable all week and plants look happy:
👉 You’re feeding exactly right
If EC slowly rises:
👉 You’re slightly strong (still okay, just top with water)
If EC drops fast:
👉 They’re hungry or temps/light are pushing uptake
Bottom line for them
• Most top-ups = water only
• Add nutrients only if EC is dropping
• When adding nutrients, go lighter than target EC
• Let the plant + EC trend guide you, not the calendar
