Topping up in dwc

Hi, Please clarify this question for me... I grow in a DWC and change the nutrient solution once a week (I have three 20-liter recirculating pots). When, after about a month, the plants start drinking a lot and I need to add water, should I also add nutrients? If so, what EC add

Yes if you refill your tank you should add nutrients as the schedule of the fertilzer tells you. Ec depends on the exact system ntf and aeroponic is a bit lower then a usual dwc system. Also depending on the stage of flowering. In veg ec ~1,5 to 1,8 is okay In flower ec 1,8-2,xx is okay If you got 60 liter water and your plants did drink like 20 and you want to refill those 20. You mix 20 liter with nutrients as the schedule tells you and add it to your tank. No worries the freshly added nutrients will be enough and after 1 week or 2 you have to completly change the water because of the nutrient switch in the schedule. I hope this helps otherwise write me a pm✌️

Wenn sie sehr viel trinken brauchst du eigentlich nur mit frischer Nährlösung auffüllen. Ec und pH-Werte sollten nach dem Auffüllen wieder so sein wie direkt nach dem Wechsel der Nährlösung.

hey buddy so and this is just my humble opinion please follow along what your gut tells you too :) Short answer No — when topping up between reservoir changes, you usually add water only, not nutrients. But you must watch EC and plant behavior to decide. The correct way to think about it (DWC logic) In DWC, plants don’t “drink nutrients” and water at the same rate. They either: 1. Drink more water than nutrients → EC goes up 2. Drink more nutrients than water → EC goes down 3. Drink both evenly → EC stays stable This is why EC trend matters more than the number itself. What to do in practice ✅ If EC is rising • Plants are drinking mostly water • Top up with plain, pH-adjusted water • Do not add nutrients This is the most common situation after week 3–4 when plants get big. ⚠️ If EC is dropping • Plants are consuming nutrients faster than water • You can top up with a very light nutrient solution • Aim for ~0.2–0.3 EC below your target EC, not full strength Example: If your target is EC 1.2, top up at EC 0.9–1.0 ❌ Never do this • Don’t top up with full-strength nutrients • Don’t “chase EC” aggressively • Don’t ignore pH drift That’s how salt buildup and root stress happen. Weekly res change still matters Your weekly full reservoir change is correct and important, especially in recirculating DWC. That reset: • Prevents nutrient imbalance • Clears salt accumulation • Keeps oxygenation efficient Pro tip (advanced but simple) If EC stays stable all week and plants look happy: 👉 You’re feeding exactly right If EC slowly rises: 👉 You’re slightly strong (still okay, just top with water) If EC drops fast: 👉 They’re hungry or temps/light are pushing uptake Bottom line for them • Most top-ups = water only • Add nutrients only if EC is dropping • When adding nutrients, go lighter than target EC • Let the plant + EC trend guide you, not the calendar Growers Love my friend and keep us posted 💚💚💚

In DWC you don’t feed “by week”, you feed “by EC”. When the plants start drinking a lot, watch the EC in the res: • If EC goes up → they drink more water than nutes → top up with plain pH’d water. • If EC goes down → they’re eating the nutes → top up with a mild nutrient mix until you’re back at your target EC. • If EC stays stable → top up with water that has the same EC as your res. Once a week a full res change is still a good idea, but the top-ups should always follow what your EC meter tells you, not a fixed ml/L.

In DWC, when topping up always check EC if it rises add only water, if it drops add a 30–50% strength nutrient solution until you’re back near your target EC.

Hello. Yes you can add ph adjusted water. As long as you keep up the once a week change of nutrient. The plants like a just water drink from time to time too. so don't worry if you dilute your nutrient a bit.

You should be aiming to be consistent. Namely, like 001 said, at the root zone. For some this looks like following your given cadence from the vendor, for others this looks like amending the solution in more specific ways.

same as what is in the rez, unless you are adjusting the formula reacting to the plant... you may need a different formula ratio for vege and flower, but for the most part you want to maintain a steady level of a well-balanced diet around roots at all times.

It’s going to be hard for you to get a correct and accurate answer without any more information. It will be better to create a diary with pictures and all information required for other growers to make a diagnosis.
