hey buddy, this an outstanding question and a place i found myself in many times , let me try and break this , and please remember this is just my humble opinion , always follow your instinct 😊 Best Ways to Sex Regular Cannabis Seeds (Fast → Faster → Fastest-ish) 🥇 Method 1 — Clone Early, Flip the Clone (Best Overall) ⭐ Your method, and honestly the gold standard How it works: 1. Grow plant until it has 4–6 nodes 2. Take a small clone (even a tiny one is fine) 3. Root the clone 4. Put the clone straight into 12/12 5. Sex shows in 7–10 days Why it’s king: • You don’t stress the main plant • You keep vegging females while males reveal themselves • Perfect for keeping moms • Very reliable Total time to sex: ~10–14 days Skill level: Intermediate My verdict: 🏆 Best balance of speed + control + plant health ⸻ 🥈 Method 2 — Flip the Whole Plant Early Simple, no cloning needed How it works: • Veg plant briefly (3–5 nodes) • Flip entire plant to 12/12 • Look for preflowers Timeline: • Sex shows in 7–14 days Pros: • Easy • No cloning equipment Cons: • Slows veg momentum • If female, you’ll need to reveg or accept smaller plants Good for: Small grows, beginners, quick decisions ⸻ 🥉 Method 3 — Stress-Induced Preflowers (Not My Favorite) Some growers try: • Extended dark periods • Slight stress • Waiting for natural preflowers in veg Reality check: • Inconsistent • Stress isn’t always worth it • Can delay growth more than it helps I don’t recommend this unless you’re very experienced. ⸻ Method 4 — DNA Sex Testing (Fastest, If Available) Technically the fastest How it works: • Send a leaf sample to a lab • Results in 2–5 days Pros: • No stress • No flip • Ultra accurate Cons: • Costs money • Not available everywhere Best for: Large or commercial runs ⸻ Quick Summary • Best all-around: Clone → flip clone 🌱✂️🌙 • Simplest: Flip whole plant early • Fastest overall: DNA testing • Least reliable: Stress tricks Growers Love my friend and happy hunting 😍

Hello. Here's how I sex them... maybe you can get something out of how I sex them that you can use yourself.... I start looking at pre-flowers at week 5 and then every time I water after that I sit down and look at/for preflowers. A jewelers loop or magnifying glass is a must... Look at where the stem meets the leaf stem to see a really small leaf... between that and the stem you'll find the preflower... Sorry if you know that already... It will show the tear drop shape with hopefully, 2 white pistils, or the male balls shape there from week 5 on... sometimes earlier... most will show what they sex they are by week 8. But sometimes, some plants will not show till weeks 10 or 12 You've sexed all the rest and 1 or 2 don't show??? They just grow leaf looking things out of that spot. They usually turn up to be tricky males, but not always. They think, you'll think, they are probably females and put them in with the others, and you find out too late. If you don't have the bucks for the lab... and clones will take 2 weeks at least... your best bet is to just wait and look every time you water. They will always show what sex they are. Just takes time. Sometimes sativa or sativa dom plants will take a bit longer than 8 weeks to show as well. Good Luck. Chuck.

They show pre flowers around week 4-6. Or you can send in "sex" testing and you'll get results way earlier than you'd ever be able to tell physically. But id just wait until week 1 or 2 of flower and toss what you don't want

Grow a bunch so you can kill the males. You should have the space for nearly 2x the number of plants you want relative to the size of plants early in flower... you'll see the sex and kill off the extras before it gets crowded. No gaurantee you will have enough and you may even have to kill a few females when the outcomes swings the other way, too. time... with enough time, you will see preflowers in vegetative phase. This may result in an over-sized plant, though. Depends on the space it needs to fill. 6-8 weeks from sprout and most plants will show preflowers. Preflowers are the single calyxes or multiple pollen sacs that will form at the base of each branch. There seems to be a lot of confusion on this in the answers the last month or two.. can find a local lab that do gender testing from a sample provided. This costs 10-20 dollars, i believe? You could spend 500-700 on some used equipment and do it yourself, too. MAybe, even sell the service to others to recoup the costs. "Thermal Cycler" and you can find the procedures for conducting such tests very easily... easier than cooking a fancy dinner, i promise. You could take clones and quickly put them into 12/12... this will force some sex organs to show possibly earlier than otherwise. you could do some preliminary work growing some plants, take clones, flip to flower and throw out the male clones.. then use the clones for the harvest... this would be feasibly outside and have minimal cost... 'research' in summer using the sun, then grow with known clones of a specific gender. Not many good options.. all involve a lot of wasted time or over-growing a plant to be certain.

I don't know what "best" would mean in your situation. Could be sending a leaf sample to a lab. Doing it fast yourself goes like this: Give your mature plants 6 hours of light to sex them. The increased scotoperiod makes them express their sex very fast, and gives them just enough light to cover their basic needs. Right on the edge though so no less than 6 hours of light. Some will show within 7 days if you have good eyes or magnification to look through. Others will take a few more days. By day 12 you should know which are male and which are female. Males tend to show first, but some females get excitied about the darkness they love and want to join the party early.
