Hi growers I was just wondering if any of you lovely people use coco in or added to your soil as an organic input to feed the soil or change the c:N ratio? Cheers guys.
There is nothing in coco that will feed the soil, it is basically an inert "filler".
It will not change the carbon nitrogen ratio in any measurable amount.
Coco just increases aeration and water retention,,,,,,,,,,think of it as organic perlite.
As previous commenters have noted, it's the other way around. Coco brings in no nutrition at all, but "soaks" up nutrients from your solution and released from the active biology in your soil. You can use Worm Castings generally to introduce fresh, active biology and a lot of nutrition to pimp your living soil. This will also add more slow release N. Use Coco and perlite to make your living soils breathable for the roots to take up oxygen.
I do add coir sometimes if I have it. But I haven't done it with a purpose besides to fluff packed soil. But this could be helpful with worms and other things in my opinion. Even mulch layers along with organic inputs
Hello Green_claws. Coco as a medium is inert and tends to bind Magnesium and Potassium to a certain degree even when charged.
Coco is used in soil grows as aeration but also as an addition to hold onto water better.
It's a good replacement for peat moss mixed in as 20-30% of total weight of the mix
Pair it with compost to reduce the C ratio and restore the N balance
