I purchased a PH digital tester, I calibrated it, now to test do I water my plant til runoff and test that? Im growing in 2gal grow bags, do I sit an under liner to catch water? I normally don't have much runoff.

Yo JibbyJack! Testing the runoff is a solid way to see what's happening at the root zone, so you’ll want to water until about 10-20% of what you put in comes out the bottom. Since you're using 2-gallon grow bags, definitely use a clean saucer or under-liner to catch that water so you can get an accurate reading with your new digital tester. Just make sure the liner is clean before you start so you don't pick up old salts, and if you don't usually get much runoff, you might need to water a bit more slowly or in larger volume just for this test to get enough liquid to dip the probe! anything you need to test... like after you mix your nutrients. This will tell you if you should ph-balance it before using it. Runoff is another potential reading of worth, but it's not going to be as precise. before reacting to runoff readings... figure out what those readings look like when you have near-flawless grow cycles... that runoff isn't necessarily representative of what is in the medium after an irrigation... it'll correlate at best and numerous factors will impact just how strongly it does... hopefully, you get to a point where you rarely need it. I'd suggest the cheap 100-pack of .5-resolution test strips with a 4-color code. last one i bought probably has 60-70 remaining.. and probably won't ever be used, lol. between callibration fluid and proper storage of fluid and equipment, it's probably cheaper and more convenient to use strips, because you don't need .1-ph accuracy.

you wanna set your input (feed) and output (runoff). There are certainly other reasons you ph would shift besides nute def/excess. Just set you input ph, your running soil so you probably rarely feed to runoff. If you wanna check the ph push runoff, regardless plant health trumps all, dont go chasing number making adjustments if its healthy then its fine. If its not that you can use runoff ph to help diagnose issues.

waste of money 😅 Ph changes indicate deficiency or excess, if u figure out how to feed properly u don't need this plaything. although many ppl will say that this device is must have😋

Test both runoff and water/nutrient mix you’re watering with prior to putting it in. You want both at the proper level for your grow medium. If your pH going in for example is off then adjust before watering and so on.
