Hi there, As an experienced AutoPot grower, I'd start the system at week 4-5. So like early flowering for autos.

These systems are better for soil, but not the best option for soilless methods. The fact it 'can' work is irrelevant to that fact. The runoff is essential to maximizing soilless growing.

Autopot system relies heavily on capillary action to deliver water it is a passive, gravity-fed form of watering, operated through a self-regulating, demand-driven process where the rate of water consumption is heavily influenced by the moisture levels within the growing medium. This moisture level is in turn dictated by the plant's metabolic activity, which is directly impacted by the indoor environmental temperature and humidity. Leave your humidity too high too long and your plant will suffocate or become oversaturared and disease vectors will begin. Leave humidity too low for too long you plant will suffer drought. There is no such thing as too much water... only a medium that holds too much for too long.

Hey Heisenherb! You definitely don't need to wait until flowering to turn that system on. For the Spider Farmer self-watering bases shown in image, the general rule is to wait until the plant's leaves have reached the edges of the pot. This usually happens around week 2 or 3 of the vegetative stage and ensures that the root system is established enough to "reach" down and pull moisture up from the reservoir via capillary action. If you turn it on too early when the roots are still small and centralized, the top of the soil might stay dry while the bottom gets soggy, which isn't ideal. Just top-water for the first couple of weeks, and once she looks sturdy and wide, fill that reservoir up! Happy Growing Growmie🌱
