Plants adapt to the light cycle. Don't whimsically fuck with it. Keep it consistent. There is no reason to switch from 18h to 12h for an autoflower. If you want to grow 12/12, do so from the start so it adpats to that schedule, properly.
As long as you provide the same DLI over 12 hours or 18 hours, the results will be the same... DLI is what matters, not hours of operation (common sense applied; don't try a 1/23 schedule, bwahaha) Only if you drop to 12h and don't increase light intensity proportionally to make up for it, you will lose yield by comparison. But, It's about number of photons that get absorbed per day, not hours of operation. You can't consider time without rate of photons... It's like calculating distance traveled but only usingn MPH or hours, but not both... makes no sense when you use one and not both. umol/s PAR (PPF) and hours ... DLI goes a step further and makes it relative to 1m^2, so you can compare DLI in an apples-to-apples way regardless of hours of operation or size of garden. DLI is DLI. My 35 sq ft garden at 35 dli will results in the same grams/sq ft as a 4x4 tent operating with 35 dli, all other factors the same.
Sorry for the mix of metric and imperial.
The only reason to give over 18h is if the light is significantly underpowered for the area of coverage. Otherwise, stick to at least 6 hours or more of darkness.
