When your canopy fills about 1/2 of the area it's good to go. If new or uncertain about expected growth rates, wait a tad longer and you can always prune off overgrowth. Check out my 2026-1 diaries (any "1") and see how the scrog is partially filled.. it's a 5x10 space but only a 35sq ft canopy, for reference. so ignore 2 squares off left wall as those are not meant to fill in and 1 square off short wall on each side. Even so, you can see each plant is only filling about 1/2 of its 2x2 allotment. As it stretches, i continue to train and requires minimal pruning. Scrogs definitely help visualize "half-filled." When you have a specific plan for the canopy, the decision makes itself... train/prune untilk you get the number of vertical colas you want, then flip and let it go vertically. Spread it out as it grows vertically to fill the space as needed. A lot of people spend extra weeks in vege then just prune off all that extra growth in mid flower. Can start there, then dial back with trial and error until you save yourself some time and effort with wasted growth that is destined for the trash bin. other logistical concerns.. have the roots had enough time to colonize the pots? Doesn't have to be maximized, but should be drinking down water in a timely matter at the least.
