Think the primary problem here is a lack of light if things can't be spread out and they are physically touching in significant ways, some pruning is fine. Becareful of taking advice that applies to indoor growing. Anything exposed is getting lots of light. Being 1000 feet further from the sun wouldn't change that let alone a few feet, unlike an indoor grow's light source that is greatly impacted by even small changes in light source distance.
