<span class="link_user">@Marbanya</span>, I like keeping my soil alive, so I would do it even with coconut. As for pests, you could use at least a layer of rice hull. To keep a little moisture on top, and making a safe zone for the roots. It's sayd (broscience maybe), that you get around 30% more roots by doing that.
