Plants that are too far from an adequate light source will respond by accelerating stem growth in order to get closer to the lamp themselves. Especially when there are many other plants. A lack of lighting can easily cause overcrowding in a growing chamber, reducing the steady progression of your crop and the distance ratio between your bulbs and your plants. To address this problem, be sure to provide enough light to your plants to prevent stem growth. At the same time, you should not position your lights too close to your plants either since this would also result in an over-stretching of the stems and in some cases, the loss of your crop. In addition to the distance between the light source and the plant, the type of light you will use also affects the size of the stretching of your crop. The orange and red lights encourage stretching and result in thinner, larger stems. And conversely, blue light stimulates a growth of thicker stems and a smaller size. When a species is ready to enter the vegetative phase and undergo its most drastic stretching period, metal halide lamps can be used to deter far too long stems. THE HEAT Heat is another essential element that can determine the stretch size of your plants during vegetation. Temperatures above 27 degrees push the stems to lengthen more and more and will propel the potential of sativas to push as high as possible. Heat lamps that are positioned too close to plants create an intolerable environment that will grow large, soft plants that will potentially wobble until they fall and lose flowers in its fall. OTHER CAUSES OF STRETCHING There are multiple variables that can lead to the stretching of plants beyond what could normally be expected of the plant. Environmental stressors resulting from transplantation (when a plant passes from one pot to another) can cause the plant to return to shock. This will eventually trigger a reaction causing a stretch. Cannabis plants that are not grown in decent conditions or do not receive enough nutrients will respond in a variety of ways and this includes stretching. Crops that are not spaced far enough apart are likely to stretch to sting the light to other plants. Due to extreme proximity, the plants will fight among themselves to reach the light, forcing them to expand as much as possible throughout the crop. HOW TO CONTROL STRETCHING DURING FLOWERING Stretching during flowering, you guessed it, takes place when you move your plants from the vegetation stage to the flowering stage. This is a completely normal reaction, as your plants are preparing to bear the weight of their heads. Stretching of a plant at the beginning of flowering varies widely; some plants can double in height while others grow only a few centimetres. There are, however, two main variables that can give you at least an idea of how your plants are stretching during flowering, and how much. Here are these two variables: Variety: Genetics has the greatest impact on the size of your plant. In general, sativa varieties stretch more than indicas and tend to develop long, slender stems. Light: Some lights, such as HPS, are more likely to encourage stretching. In addition, great distances between your canopy and your lights will cause the plants to stretch as they try to get closer to the light source. Stretching during flowering usually lasts the first two weeks of the phase. To minimize stretching, keep your lights between 10 (for CFL) and 30 centimetres (for HID) of your canopy. Finally, choose indica varieties if you have a smaller growing space. HOW TO AVOID STRETCHING In many cases, you can expect your cannabis plants to stretch during the flowering phase. Keeping that in mind helps to make a plan in case your species ends up growing much more than you could have imagined. If the information is available, get information on the standard size of your species and compare it to the size of your growing space taking into account the necessary distances between the bulbs and the plants. TRAFFIC While outdoor crop operations benefit from natural air to naturally limit stretching, indoor crops must assume the maintenance of air circulation within a confined space. Basic ventilation is enough to help the cannabis stems strengthen and become thicker rather than too high. In this way, the plants continue to grow vigorously without reaching heights and at the same time, your tolerance ceiling. MANUAL INTERVENTION For growers who want to get their hands dirty, there are physical procedures that can be done to reduce stretching. Similar to the natural effect that the wind has on cannabis plants, manually bending the leaves and stems will cause tiny cracks in the plant's tissues that will cause the plant to focus on regenerating its wounds instead of its vertical growth. THE TOPPING Topping is a form of manual intervention on cannabis to influence its performance, shape or size. In essence, topping is a process in which a new node is cut, growing from the plant to reduce its size and create a "v"-shaped notch that will eventually form two heads. Topping may be an effective measure to combat stretching, but it is important not to do so when the flowering phase begins. In most cases, an abnormal stretch of cannabis plants will not completely destroy your crop. In fact, stretching can indeed help increase your performance. For growers with a growing operation large enough to contain tall plants, stretching can increase the total yield of a species with more vertical space for head formation. This is my first time growing a kush strain. The growth is explosive. Short and stocky build on this pheno type. I hoping for a great harvest with a tasteful nightcap kind of smoke.

Start of week 3, the three survivors are doing great! I did happen to find some algae growing on top of one of the rockwool cubes. (This was my fault for not fully covering the tops of them with hydroton to block out light.) As an attempted fix, I cut some square pieces of black cloth that I laid of the top of the cubes to block out the light completely. Hoping removing their light source, the algae will die off and discourage any further growth. If it gets any worse I’ll try using a hydrogen peroxide solution. Day 17, the three ladies are looking nice. Starting to see some nice healthy roots populate inside the buckets. I went ahead and upped their nutrients today. We will see how they are doing in the morning. -FloraFlex - 1.5g/gal of each V1 and V2. -Advanced Nutrients - 1/2 strength MGB and hobbyist additives. **Algae update: seems like using the black cloth to block out all the light has killed off that algae growth and I don’t see anymore so it’s working!** Day 18, I thought one of my plants had root rot. Which was weird for it to happen that fast in less than 24 hours since changing the res. Come to find out it’s just nutrient stain from the Advanced Nutrients, so thank god. #1 and #2 which are growing with FloraFlex got FIMmed today. I’ve topped plants before but never FIM. Not sure if I did it right, but that’s the fun in all this, is experimenting to see what works. Day 20, #1 and #2 are responding well after being FIMmed couple days ago. I decided to FIM #3 as well. I also decided to leave the 4th one out of this diary from here on out since she’s behind. We will stick with the original three that survived from the start. So far I’m really loving their bushy appearance and thick leaves. Their roots are coming out super nice as well! Pretty soon these babies are going to just take off!

Con 22 dias, pasados 7 de la última poda de hojas y 22 del cambio de fotoperiodo me decidí por hacerles una nueva poda, esta algo más severa . Yemas, hojas y chupópteros de bajos. A partir de entonces solo se irán quitando muy de vez en cuando alguna hoja o algun brote o yema que pueda salir por ahí que no me guste, muy poca cosa. Me deshice de la malla, harto me tenia. La quité para la poda y luego me hizo mucha pereza volver ponerla. Prefiero menos cantidad. Esta semana explosión de tricomas

This is my first grow. I just started super duper light nutes. Like 4 ml per half gallon. Cal mag and grow big. Upgrading light tomorrow. Can't wait especially with the progress I've made with approx 215 watts of less. Upgrading to 1200W. Update: i got my light. Viparspectra 1200w

Day 77-84 (April 17th-24th) (Day 78) I honestly cant believe I’ve been vegging this long. The growth for almost 80 days of veg is laughable. I’ve compiled a little list of what has gone wrong so far. - I added too much glacial moraine which made the soil too water retentive - I’ve been foliar feeding too much kelp - I gave too many bloom nutrients for a plant in veg - EDIT: DID NOT WATER ENOUGH AT ONCE The plants have been drooping like crazy this past week and I’m going to try watering in a full gallon per plant. I first thought it was from the medium not drying out enough, soil compaction ect. and I’m sure those are definitely areas where my soil mix could improve but the bottom of the container is pretty damn dry. I could actually be under watering despite soaking the top with 500ml a day. I’m going to sit the pots on some plastic sheeting so they don’t evaporate as much from the bottom and water in a full gallon each making sure I get some runoff. I was going to wait until I get my air pump but fuck it, it’s coming tomorrow afternoon. The pots are so big that they’re not fully wetting to the bottom even with a gallon. I’m going to try to water in a gallon every 4 days while keeping the top soil moist with the sprayer. In hindsight 6 plants in 5-7 gallon pots would be the most ideal. (Day 79) Holy fuck did a full gallon watering make a difference. I should have been doing this the whole time. All 4 plants are praying and stretching upward like crazy. They just look more vigorous and happy within a day. I bet they will be even happier with that supplemental air. If things stay this smooth I should be able to flip around day 84, possibly earlier. Got my air pump in the mail today. This is kind of a shot in the dark so hopefully it works. It’s super loud and vibrates like crazy. First I’m going to try running it 24/7 and see if there is any improvement over the next few days. If it does work, I’ll try running it on my humidity controller so it’s not constantly humming and will only turn on when the humidity is high. I’m going to turn the night time temps down to 70f to prevent root problems now that I’m watering much bigger amounts less frequently and it’s getting warmer during the day. (Day 81/Day 1F) Ever since I’ve been watering in the proper amounts I have seen an absolute explosion in growth. I’ve decided to flip today, now that I’m confident my soil mix isn’t completely fucked. I might run into some N/mg problems during the stretch so I will make sure to give a final foliar feeding around the end of week 1. (Day 3F) So I’m literally seeing dwc growth rates now. Plants have grown more in the last 5 days than the last 3 weeks. If I had stayed at this pace of growth since day 1, I would have an 8 foot tall plant or I would be halfway through flower already. Oh well. Good learning experience. *grits teeth* I’m going to put up the second layer of trellis before these girls stretch out of control. Bbb#3 is seriously stretchy and will likely more than double in size in the next 2 weeks. The other 4 are all quite stout and bushy. I’m giving a light, preemptive defoliation each day and picking off some of the lower sucker branches. I will do a full strip around day 21F.

Well I said I was leaving her untrained but on day 56 I gently tied back a few branches to open up the canopy. This is looking like it's going to be my best grow yet.

Hello everybody :) End of the eighth week of flowering. Everything has calmed down and now the girls are just gaining weight :) The BAC Stimulator + Terpinator combination does the job! Buds are superb covered with resin, very oily and sticky - mniam :)

Flush week is here! Or was here lol. I was behind on my journal's and I've actually already chopped the girls (pics included) and will update soon with a harvest week as soon as they are finished hang drying. The trichomes were cloudy white with roughly 20-30% amber trichomes and some wonderful terp aromas from each. 100K has a smell and taste (we sampled a bud dried in a paper bag, was fantastic) has a similarity to Slapz from the same release and it is honestly a great flavor and aroma to have. She also has hints of nutty earthiness underneath from her White Truffles and they blend well together. Grandaddy's terps vary going down her branches so far. At the top her grapey berry aroma is dominant where as the lower buds are more heavily of flowers (violets, i agree with leafly on that aroma description for GDP) with hints of the berries. A sample from a paper bag was mostly of violet flowers and smoke smooth with a deep relaxing high. Better info to come with the harvest week update! Plants were left in 48 hours of darkness with attention to airflower kept to prevent mold Our drying set up: The tent light is off, with oscillating fan removed. Only an intake was left on the bottom (removed oscillating fan after 1st day was too much) with a small monkey fan pointed across to keep it moving along the floor, with the exhaust running up top to keep even airflow around the buds. I'm trying to avoid any direct airflow on the buds. The trellis net is lifted to the top of the tent, to hang the branches from easily with plant wire. Our drying conditions: The branches are hung individually after snipping off larger fan / water leaves, we try to leave some of the smaller leaves to help protect the buds and their terpenes. Our environment we try to keep in the mid to low 60s, but never higher than 68 (I prefer 66 degrees farenheit) and the humidity we keep around 60 to 60% but no higher, and preferably never lower. This is to protect the terpenes and cannabinoids from evaporating due to heat or dry conditions. I changed to this method after some research and owe the idea on temps and humidity to Matt from Mr Canucks Grow on Youtube, it's a more recent video of his from within the past year and was very informative.

Girls are doing great! Especially for entering the final week! They are getting watered every day to every other day. Letting them dry out a little. Got hit with some recharge and mammoth P for the first time. Just cause I got some for Black Friday. Pulled plant number four from the other tent. Wanted to wait for some amber and happy I did
