-INTRO- Hello again friends and neighbours, With my Dos Si Dos #33 curing it's time once again to get growing! I'm hoping the indica dominant Dos Si Dos will be effective pain management for my back, so this time around I am growing ACE Seeds "Congo" - a 70:30 sativa dominant hybrid whose parents are a mix of Congolese sativas (bangi congo & congo #3) and the Pakistani Chitral Kush. I do love a good sativa. Two seeds were planted in pre-soaked soil on the 11th March and placed with my cacti for moral support. Today - 4 days later - both have broken ground. An auspicious start. I don't do any of this pre-soaking seeds in water, or germinating in paper towel or anything like that. These plants have been growing like *ahem* weeds *ahem* for millions of years, I trust them to know what they're doing without me getting in the way. -REGULAR SEEDS- I bought a variety of regular (non-feminized) seeds from ACE as I'm planning on collecting pollen at some future time to grow my my own seed stock - it seems cheaper than buying new ones all the time. Eventually I hope to cross ACE's "Panama" will their "Bangi Haze" but that's not going to happen for a while! With this in mind, I've modified a PC case and added in a small (22 watt) LED light designed for plants. I'm hoping the case will be able to house two bonsai parent plants and this diary will see its testing and first use. I have dubbed it the "BonsaiPC". I've decided to only germinate two seeds to start with - this does limit my chances of getting a female but I don't like the idea of throwing away plants that I don't have the space to grow them. By being conservative the only thing I waste is time. -THE PLAN- So this is the plan; the two seedlings will be vegged, trained using LST and topped with a view to taking clones as soon as possible for propagation in the BonsaiPC. The parent plants will then be placed immediately on a 12/12 cycle until they can be sexed. What happens next will depend on what sex they turn out to be... If both are male, the seed-grown plants will be binned. One of them will be selected for retaining as a parent in the BonsaiPC. Fresh seed will be germinated and we start again from the top. If both are female, then a clone will be kept of each. However, I might not take both seed-grown plants through flowering if they appear to be significantly different phenotypes. As I use the same space for vegging, flowering and drying I don't want to deal with one plant being ready for chop and the other needing another few weeks. It also makes it a lot more difficult to manage the scrog canopy if the different plants stretch different amounts etc. If I have to pick only one female to flower, I will pick the one which displays the strongest sativa traits. If only one is female, the seed-grown male will be binned. The seed-grown female will be flowered. A clone of each sex will be kept as bonsai parents. Assuming I do get at least 1 female, I'll be making a decision at this point on if I should continue with flowering or if I should re-veg to fill out the screen. I may even prune back and re-veg. I'll just have to make a judgement as best as I can when the time comes. Well, I've already written more than anyone is likely to read so I guess that will do for now! Thanks -wlk

With the seedlings just germinated I started this week by making a bunch of changes to the growdrobe - a new, neater electrics board and the exhaust point was moved and ducting rerouted to eliminate a couple of bends. Things are much neater now. I've struggled with getting the environment and micro-climate right for the seedlings - drying out too fast and needing watering too frequently etc. I experimented with my light height & power settings, thermostat placement, with/without bags etc. It took the week to really get things right and in that time they suffered. At the end of the week things have improved.

We finished last week with #1 recovering from environmental issues while #2 was going strong. Roles were reversed this week around. I was still figuring out how best to configure my lights when a user had left a comment about exactly that after their experience with the same lights. Thanks to SaKeZC, it was exactly the right advice at the right time and I'm now going to be using their suggested light setup as a base for this grow from now on. Stage | Hanging Height | Power Veg 2-4 | 40cm | 25-50% Veg 4+ | 35cm | 50% Flw 1-2 | 25cm | 70% Flw 3+ | 20-25cm | 100% With this setup, #1 recovered quickly but on the 28th I found #2 looking very sad indeed. It looked thirsty but the substrate was still damp from watering the previous day when all was well. As I was planning to pot up the following day anyway, I didn't take any immediate action - see how it goes now it's been potted up.

At the end of week 2, plant #2 was looking pretty sad while #1 was looking okay after a brief unhappy spell. I repotted both plants to new containers on the last day of week 2, expecting #2 to improve after the move Week 3 started with both plants looking very happy and healthy and I feel like I've got the environmental teething issues sorted out properly now - thanks in no small part to SaKeZC who left a comment for me. Thanks! On the 3rd, both plants had developed at least 5 nodes, and were then topped at the 3rd node and have since recovered any stress they might have had. Feed-wise, I have starting feeding a small amount of calmag plus (0.5ml/l). I'm in a softwater area and I plan to give a small amount of calmag with every feed for most of the grow. And that's all there is to say, everything is looking grand. I expect they'll be potted up again soon and it won't be long at all until I can take some clones.

This week started well, the plants were looking great. I started some LST and when it came to watering I was debating if I should put them up or not and if I should feed or not. I decided to let them go another water cycle with plain water, then I would pot them up. That was a mistake, as a day or two later they were looking very incredibly droopy and had started showing signs of nitrogen deficiency. They didn't seem to be using much water at all - usually they take water every 3 days, but they were still quite damp. I potted them up to a slightly bigger pot that would dry out quite quickly, but also provide a little bit more room for their roots. It took a couple of days for them to perk up and in that time the nitrogen deficiency worsened but at the start of a new week (#5) they have perked up again and I have re-applied their LST ties.

This was a pretty good week all things considered. After a few days in a slightly bigger pot (to recover from root binding without being too wet for too long) they were moved up again to bigger pots. I gave them a light feed with their pot up (1ml/l grow in addition to 1ml/l calmag plus) because I was concerned root development would take a few days to kick in and the existing usable substrate was pretty much exhausted. This wasn't needed, and I ended up with just a little bit of nutrient burn. I'm moving back to a feed of 0.5ml/l calmag for now. LST was re-applied two days later they're really starting to get going now. Very pretty plants. I'm going to give them 2-4 days to develop a canopy of new shoots then I think I'll be taking cuttings. Then it's will switch the parents to flower to sex them and once sexed it's decision time on how I want to take this grow forward.

This weeks update covers two weeks (6 & 7). I took cuttings from both plants which are just starting to root after 7 days. Unfortunately for them, they're probably going to be culled - see below. After taking cuttings, I switched the lights to 12/12 the next day and after 5 days, both plants are confirmed male. I've selected one of the two which I thought was prettiest and I will continue to flower him to collect pollen. I trimmed it right back to try and minimise any uncontrolled pollen release - don't want it contaminating future females! I might keep one cutting to test out my PC-case bonsai mother box but I won't be keeping any cuts long term. I guess that will be the end of this diary, thought I might do a final update when I collect pollen.

Hi mate, nice to see it going. For that one looking kind a down, stop watering few days (3-5) until you get more air into the soil or maybe you allready have a root bound due to higher light mount because plants like to push down like they push up so transfer to bigger pot would resolve your problem put it in 20L airpot/textile and before flowering put it in 40L textile/airpot and you will pull 100g min. dry top qual. buds from each (don't know how long you veg. but in 6-7 weeks of veg + 7-9weeks of flower you must get 100g. per plant min.)

@wrongleverkronk, Tnx, mate. All the best for us growers so any good info that I have I will provide to you. I am in perpetual mode with 3 rooms (one vege, two flower) so I am every 28-35days cutting some strain and have lot of experince before MIGRO led in HPS and outdoor so I can advise you and let some finest tips about the light/train under the led light - Migro aray4/aray 8

@SaKeZC, I'm about to update my diary but the sad plant is all better now - I thought it was probably root bound but was planning to pot up the next day anyway. A day after potting up and both of them were perfectly happy and have been since. Really credit your light info with getting my environment issues sorted so thanks again man!

@HighRoller909, I've smoked nep jam - it's one of my favourites. I also grew some NJ F2s a long time ago, unfortunately I had to move house 3 weeks in to flower so I never got to harvest them. That was a sad day. What weird things did you have with the NJ/BH?

@wrongleverkronk, good to see another mj lover seeking for clear, uplifting and positive high. I have 2 strains in my hands, A5 and Golden Tiger, both are too strong.Pretty heavy hitters for everyday smoke.Congo didn't go that well this round sadly,I gifted it to a friend. To be honest it was the fussiest plant out of all ACE I've tried so far.But smoke wise,a true diamond.definitely need that clean electric buzz. Nepal Jam was beautiful too,2 years ago. Amazingly warm and happy high,no body high. I ordered nep jam and a bangi haze lately but got some weird things going on and them seeds are gone...

Looking good but mate, you should transfer to 20-25L pot right away to get good root development and before flowering put in 40-45-50L if you have roome. Result will be top. Some strain in their first two weeks of flowering can drink up to 4L of water per day in warm period, some drink 4L trough whole week. In early stage you have to check by pot weight and soil moist. Every time when you think you should water put your finger in soil 5-6cm deep and if its very moist, don't. If you soil is slightly moist and full dry at top, water next day. If completly dry, water right away. Keep the good work 👌

@SaKeZC, aye - Yeah, I only used the smaller pots this time because it was already root bound but was still damp from being watered days previously. I didn't want it sitting in a really large pot and not drying out. I'm gonna be potting up really soon (a day or two) to the 2nd biggest pots I have which are 15L. I think my biggest pots are around 30L, but I'll look in to getting some bigger ones and some bigger intermediate-sized ones! Cheers mate!

Very nice. Keep the good grow and if you have spare almost 100€ go with MIGRO UVB fixture and enjoy the better taste, better resin production and higher/better density of buds produced by added UVB. Tnx for beliveing in my past advice and once again keep the good grow

Nice cacti, 😁 any trichocereus peruvianus in the mix?

wrongleverkronkcommented4 years ago
@ObiWanKaRobbie, nah. I used to but I couldn't get them enough light - they kept falling over. The lophs really struggled as well - they were all very oddly stretched until last year when I built them this light box. They're looking much better these days!
