Greetings
First grow, first diary. Im starting the online version a bit late. I’ve just started week 4 of the grow.
Firstly I bought the 2 in 1 tent because I was able to convince My Beloved that we could grow basil and other assorted what nots on the other side, and that both the space and the money were well invested. That is to say, the approval process went well.
I decided on Deep Water Culture because I had kept Aquariums in the past, and still had the equipment. I expected that the skills needed to do either weren’t at all that dissimilar. Turns out to be mostly true.
Side Note: I also had an old Aerogarden. I experimented on germination with bag seed as this system feeds water and nutrients with a top flow into what looks to me what is basically a super seeder made from peat. I had read that with DWC, the week or so getting the tap roots to the resevoir after germination could benefit from some top watering and the Aerogarden. So thats what I did. I paper toweled them, and after the tap root was about 2cm, I cut the super seeder, seated the root in the seeder and ran it on simple tap water at about 250 ppm for a few days. Although the sample size was limited, I found that was real quick but the seeder was always very wet, which is a slight concern. Then I read that you can basically do the same thing but by creating a wick with some simple cotton twine from the seeder to the water in the DWC resevoir. In the end I like this better. It gets them in their home with the big light, the fans etc etc.
I started my grow March 31 when I recieved my White Widow seeds from Crop King.
I followed their germination instructions to the letter, which was a basically an overnight soak and the paper towel method. After about 3 days one seed was ready and after 5 total days, 5 of the 6 seeds they sent me germinated. 4 of the 5 produced beyond the cotydelon stage.
As I mentioned I put them right into the main resevoirs and ran only one of my lights @ 24 inches for 18hrs.
I’m using two tupperware containers I had at the house as resevoirs. I also had 2 old aquarium pumps that both have two outlets. I ran hoses and stones from each pump to each reservoir so that if one of them fails it won’t be a major catastrophe.
Brain Fart Alert! For whatever reason I overlooked the osclilating fan, even in the past for my veggies I’ve used one. Had it sitting 10 feet away for the first 2 weeks.
Im using rested (at least 24 hrs) tap water, its a bit hard with 225ppm.
