Had em germinated in my tent but moved them into a covered outdoor veg table right after it got really cold because that should be the last time that happens. It gets very hot and sunny here and it happens quickly. They really need exposure early on so they can adapt well (IMO). I've also got a bunch more seeds so I'm being more flippant with how these are treated.
Happily moved them outta my tent to free up space and prevent them from being overly shocked after moving them when they get older. It might be slightly early to do this, but this will give me some time where if all of these die, I can still plant a bunch and be on time. I've got 20 Critical Mass CBD autoflowers from ILGM on the way as well, so as a last resort those will go outside and should hopefully explode in growth.
Why these strains: Brisco's Bargain Beans is kinda local and the prices are just too good to pass up. The reviews and pics on DCSE were great and it was kinda funny seeing how surprised people were with their results.
Vashon Pennywise x Uber Males are supposed to have high amounts of CBD which is what I love in bud. Personally, any mixture of CBD and THC in a bud is the absolute best. My brain loves the warm, calming blanket that tucks me in while the THC gives me all the real psychoactive effects, like I just get to sit back and enjoy it all.
The Coastal Burmese seeds were freebies from JBC.
The single ILGM N. Lights Autoflower is a bit of a personal experiment where I can compare the growth of it outside with the indoor plants I have. I figured it would be slightly more interesting to do with an autoflowering seed.
*will update in week 2 post but I lost 5 of em to leaf cutters (that's what someone called them). I came over and opened up the top, saw nothing but stems in 5 cowpots...looked closer and saw 2 caterpillars in 2 different cowpots curled up, sleeping all soundly and full. They ignored the tomato plants completely lmao. It's nbd and I'll be keeping the other ones going but they were definitely too young to go in there. I thought that covering would offer more protection but it seems like it's just to keep animals away. I will be sprouting 6-8 more and waiting 2-4 weeks instead*
Whelp, I lost quite a few of these already to some caterpillar leaf cutter. I was really surprised when I opened the container and saw the tops missing from so many. It was perplexing because I couldn't see how a rabbit or something would get in there and the tomato plants were completely untouched but as I investigated, I found the 2 sleeping caterpillars in 2 of the cowpots. I started germinating 6 more, pennywise x ubermale and black banana punch. I am going to be keeping them inside for a bit longer and transplant them as they grow and when they grow out of their 1 gallon pot, they'll go outside.
I'm still growing these of course, but haven't checked on them since it got down to the low 40s. Hopefully burying them a bit and using the plastic cover helped!
I know they're all weird and ugly, but I don't really mind right now. They'll be stunted for a bit but since they'll be growing outside for the next 5 months, I'm not too concerned...as long as they live lol.
All of em are now in the ground in various spots in the garden. 4 are in a row, 2 are in random corners. They should've been inside longer but really it's fine for me. I hear all the time "oh MJ is so easy to grow! Really abuse them every few days and they'll bounce back so hard!" etc. so I don't see much of an issue with putting photoperiods outside to suffer abuse lol. They've got 5-6 months to recover and the intense sun, wind, rain etc. should give them enough reason to try and grow as big as possible. The summers here are hot and windy af, and they're going to be mostly blasted with sun for the entire time lol. They'll get a ton of water (I'll be trying nutrients for a few too) so I don't see it going THAT badly. I am trying to emulate my previous grow because I can't believe how well it did when I didn't do a damn thing haha.
They were all planted in some compost we bought a big ol pile of. I should've tested for sodium but I dug far underneath and mixed the layer of sandy clay soil with it before putting them in the ground so hopefully that along with the recent rains will take care of any salt.
I haven't sexed them yet because they're too young but I've got 5 cards to send out with leaf cuttings for that. I'm thinking I'll just do it to the 5 most promising ones since none are feminized (except the Northern Lights autoflower). I'm germinating 8 other seeds right now and have 4 sprouts (3 died while I was away) so even if these die, my backups have backups.
Oh and I almost forgot! The cold and general abuse must have messed with their growth a lot because the fan leaves got all wonky and fused together. It's kinda funny since they don't even look like weed anymore. Not sure why it would do that but it's interesting.
Weird question but do males smell differently than females (at least maybe when they're young?) It could've been something else, but I picked up one of these and did the ol' scratch and sniff on the leaf and it just smelled weird lol
nope they smell the same lol I only know this cause there is a hemp field near my property and A whole field of male hemp plants when they a re releasing pollen they can smell a bit veggy but thats all ive noticed lol
Ok so I probably should just start a new journal but this is low effort so low effort all around lol.
First: After a bunch of younglings were cut down, I sprouted 7 more and kept them in the tent longer. This week, I went to the garden and chose 2 plants to be moved out for healthier looking ones from the tent. This wasn't hard, as I could easily see which 2 were the weakest. Want to know WHY they were so small? Well, I was an idiot and didn't remove them from the cow pots entirely. "It will just turn into manure if I plant it in the dirt. I'll tear off a couple sides and tear some holes and it'll be fine." Absolutely not. I removed the 2 and could see the cow pots totally fine and all together despite being in the ground in weather for like 2-3 weeks lmao. The plants didn't go to waste though. Since they were basically the same size and the root ball was just jammed up, I took em out and moved them into the nearby woods. I put them in some weird spots so I'm very curious to see how they'll grow. I'll check them out in a couple weeks and make sure they're not males because I don't want to pollinate my ladies or anyone else's.
Next: I replaced one of the two with a Northern Lights I had going in my tent. I wanted to push this one to its limits, so I topped it early on and you can see what she's growing now. I'm not kidding when I say the 2 tops popped up within 2-3 days and were a couple inches high in a week. This girl did not miss a single beat. I also started her in a mesh bag, moved her to a 1gal fabric pot and then to the garden. I'm no professional by any means, but I am really questioning the advice every budding MJ grower youtube channel says about autos. All you hear is "Don't do topping. Don't transfer pots. Don't defoliate. They can't handle anything. Don't give nutes. Don't be mean" etc. This might just be a strong pheno or a lucky seed, but I am telling you she grew faster than the 3 in the tent. My guess is these YouTubers are well meaning, but have not actually tried the things they are saying not to do with such certainty....like what everyone does online lol. We'll see though. Maybe this one will just die now :')
Finally: I purchased some sex tests from a 4/20 sale and am waiting to hear back from the labeled ones. I had 5 tests and used all 5, all in the row. I picked them because they're the strongest looking right now and I don't want to waste the space. I tried looking for early signs of sex but really am terrible at telling. I'm planning for the day I get the results to sex them on my own and compare to the tests and see how wrong/right I was. IF there are 2+ males, I have one reg Black Banana Punch waiting to replace it AND I have a Twenty20 Feminized Snowcaine in the tent getting bigger by the day.
Thanks for stopping in! Since these should be ready to take off, I'll be using my 2 Plant Trainers soon and will start topping, bending etc. as they get healthier.
My timeline is all outta whack because of the cold in April and the slacking I'm doing on documenting this grow but I think this should be around week 7 of veg, according to the dates on my photos. Looking at week 4 though, it's hard to believe they grew that much but I guess it's possible!
My sex tests came back and apparently the gods have been pleased with me doing something as 3 of the 5 were females and those 3 were the ones planted in the row! The 2 males were the busted up scraggly ones...go figure! Oh also weirdly enough, the one plant I thought smelled odd was a male, and I took some educated guesses after inspecting the plants and sending in the samples and was correct on every guess! I KNEW I could see and smell those balls ;)
I also think I can tell the strains now, despite me mixing them up when I dropped every single cowpot lol. The 2 with the dark stems are the black banana punch (duh) and the other the right is the Pennywise x Uber CBD:THC strain. The autos weren't mixed up.
No issues at all with these. Did some defoliating and trimming on a couple of them. The 2 autos are both flowering but in different stages of flower.
"Low effort" to some might mean chuck a seed and let it grow but I meant that I wouldn't be doing all the bullshit I gotta do to my plants in the tent lol. I still defoliate, top, train etc. because I do want some good buds that look and feel nice!
These just won't stop growing. The photos are killing it and I'm so excited to see how they continue to grow. I am praying things stay as good as they have been going! Not much else to say, really :)
The autos are great, too. I am impressed with their size and the difference between them. To clarify why they're so different: The bushy auto was planted at the same time as the photos, early in life. She wasn't topped, trimmed, defoliated or anything until she started showing early signs of flower where I went in and got rid of some of the very obviously poorly placed bud sites, crossing leaves and branches, close to the ground etc.
The scraggly auto was grown about 3 or 4 more weeks inside, then placed outside. She was also topped while in my tent. Once outside, I stopped training and topping and all that. I would guess the "stress" of repotting outdoors is what caused her to flower earlier, but I don't really care because she grew a ton and stretched herself out enough where the bud sites are really all over the place and in great spots to stretch and get light. I am going to probably get some stakes in next week as I really don't want them to get too heavy!
The SMELL! I can't believe how potent the flowering NL is. The aroma is incredible. The ones in my tent are much further into flowering but lost a lot of that because of the humidity (and I'm sure other stuff I did) so it's just blowing my mind how different they are.
Thanks for stopping by!
