Germination issue: seed didn't come off first leaves so I plucked it off gently. On the P.E plant it effected the first leaf (slight burn looking mark on them) but it's off to the races now! Og kush seems to be growing a bit quicker.
Both plants will be 100% outside in shade from now on. Watering once or twice per day depending on how the soil looks (small amounts)
Water is tap ph with vinegar. All organic build a soil 3.0 used for both.
Ladies are still growing. Not a big height difference week over week but a bunch of new growth is starting. Waiting to transplant the OG until it hits around 6 inches tall. No top dressing needed for a while still. Just ph water 1 or 2x daily depending on water not giving a ton of water (few sprays from a bottle). Let the soil dry yesterday after a decent rain.
Really cloudy and a bit rainy/ humid most of the week but no issue from the rain water (kept mostly out of direct rain). Cloudy and warm weather coming up so it'll be interesting to see if the continued cloudy weather hurts growth.
Transplanted the auto OG kush 2 days ago. Just kinda plopped it in the 7 gal fabric pot at night. I don't see any issue so far. Plant was pretty small so I didn't see much roots but maybe that's for the best and it won't be too shocked in its new home.
We have reached day 24 and a lot new growth is showing. Both are not bushing out like I would have expected. Seem kind of small for almost a month old but I could be wrong.
Weather has been steady. Maybe only got a little drizzle one day so it's mostly gotten ph water. Upping the water intake a little and letting it go dry for a bit longer every so often so the roots expand more.
Leaves seem to love the outside light. They have been pointing up consistently for a while (not heat stress, it's only max 83f here and when it's that hot I put in the shade)
Day 31 pics. Woah did my Auto OG Kush have a rough week. I transplanted it and then 2 or 3 days after I came out to see it dug out by a squirrel I guess. I quickly got it back in place, tied it up and gave a little water then put it in the shade for 2 days. Seems to have gotten its strength back and I don't see any issue (other than stunted growth). When I put it back in its place, I buried it to the first original leaves. It probably grew about 1 inch in the week while the P.E grew 2.
Getting rain today so I'll wait till dry to water again. OG has some solid smell when you get close to it (basically nose on the plant). OG was in the lead but P.E seemed to have really taken off this last week.
No top dressing yet. Both plants are in build a soils 3.0 blend so I might be ok until preflower. Maybe 1 more week until I feed. They seem so small so maybe 2. LST will happen this week.
Pre flower entered on day 35. Weather still mostly cloudy with some rain and sun. Lst done on day 35 r so on both plants. P.E is getting much bigger while OG lags from the beating it took. No discoloration, just slow growth. Today is day 38 and I can see more bud sites forming with little white hairs. Day 35 only top cola site had white hairs.
Build a soil craft and flower dry nutrients added. Could be used as a tea. Top dressed craft with 1/4 cup (1 handful). Flower with 1" across entire surface then watered.
Day 42 7/2/21.
Super hot week. Most days in 90's (freedomheit) followed by cloudy rainy days. Not ideal but growth continued and more white and brown ish hairs appeared.
Powdery mildew started 5 days ago on a few leaves then 4 days ago I used a little of the dr zymes eliminator which cleared it up quick (1oz in 32oz spray bottle used at night over 3 days). In 10 days I can spray for another 3 consecutive days. Looks like I got a little bug damage but not much. I don't see anything under the leaves so I'll just keep an eye on it.
More lst was done on the PE curling to the side after initial bend down. Seems like I'll get a few solid tops compared to the OG which I didn't lst much (its gone through enough and just recovering now). Might do more training this week on it.
Smell is really coming through on the OG. Skunky smell. PE is starting to put off a scent and I get citrus/pine I think.
Day 50 - 7/10. Weather was mostly cloudy and rainy this entire week. Not much sun for the ladies. Added fly paper and definitely should have done that since the beginning.
Next week I'll be looking to do a banana peel tea for the plants.
Buds are getting bigger but still tiny. Smell is delicious.
Day 57 (7/17/21)- so much rain and clouds this week. This entire coming week will also be rain. No banana tea this week, maybe next. They are not huge plants and it's a first grow so it's best to only introduce a few techniques as a base for future grows.
I'll be building a small canopy over top the plants this week so I don't have to keep moving them to get out of the rain.
7/23 day 64: Heavy rain the beginning of the week but have had 3 days of great 75 and sunny days.
Bud rot on a few sites so I snipped off.
Dr zymes applied 7/22. Stuff works great.
Cover built yesterday, just need to add on the clear wrap. Rain coming up the rest of the week.
Trichome pics are hard to get but at least they are there. Main colas has brown/red hairs but most sites have all white and 1/2 the size of buds. I would think it should be finishing up by now but I would guess another 1 to 2 weeks. No amber yet but I'll look around more later today.
Day 72. 7/31. Great weather this week for the most part. Maybe seeing mostly cloudy trichs. Smells amazing and can get whiffs of them from about 20-30 yards away. My shotty greenhouse is keeping the rain off the buds which is what I wanted.
I will continue to water till harvest.
Daughter was just born the other day so hopefully I can keep up with the documentation.
Day 80. 8/8. Buds are still bulking up. Still clear/ cloudy trichs. Good weather this week so they bulked up a decent amount. Pe won't yield much bc of my lst learning experience.
Dealing with a dog who just had acl surgery and a newborn so updates will be delayed.
Eta 1-2 weeks maybe.
Happy growing!
A lot of trial and error with a first grow but I learned a bunch along the way. Over the last week the buds got so much more dense. I think another week would have done a little more on the ripening side but I needed to harvest to get ready for the next plants.
Color and smell are amazing. The entire growth I could smell pineapple. I even asked others to smell and they said the same.
Had some bug, bud rot and powdery mildew issues and light seems to be a very limiting factor where I live when growing outside autos.
Overall very easy to growand feed. No lst next time. Introduce other liquid fertilizers to help development.
Easy to grow. Decent resistance to bugs and mildew. Smell is nothing I've ever encountered. So strong and sweet. Autos outside in the future will not be lst and watered only when the plant tells me.
This plant recovered amazing after being transplanted and ripped from the ground by an animal. Honestly the kush smell was strong with this the entire growth. Some bud rot, bugs and powder mildew during the grow but it handled it well. This plant never got thirsty, watered when dry but the plant never cared. Light was a limiting factor and the bud seems a bit larfy/fluffy.
Don't be sad is over, be happy it happened. On to the next grow!
Things I have learned up to this point (for my own reference I suppose; 35 days in). Germination - once you see the sprout, if the seed shell is on, take it off asap and gently.
Veg - water even less than what I did (small amounts by base daily). Next I will water larger ish quantities further from stalk so the branches stretch. Outdoors in my area is tough bc it's cloudy 4000% of the time (barely an exaggeration). Net off plants bc animals also like to get high. LST a little earlier 3-4 nodes or at 4" tall ish.
@Northern_Ent, I 100% agree, lst is not super beneficial outdoor. I didn't realize till after I did it so one plant had it while the other did not as a test. I had some bud rot on the PE this week from touching buds as a result from the lst and how the bud grew. Live and learn. Next batch of autos I will top 1 and leave 1 untouched. Next year will be photo period plants for sure. Very little sun where I am and I think indica dominant photos will thrive.
@Flex1, I think LST is a bit over rated for outdoor growing. The sun tracks across and the plant naturally follows it. Lots of people with indoor experience using the same amount of LST but it doesn’t seem to be as helpful outdoors and you’re not constrained for space. Topping and fimming seem more productive overall. LST helps a bit but topping at the right time does more. Good luck the rest of the way.
Good luck. Using vinegar is totally fine (no need for commercial pH down) but it’s worth having a pH meter as it doesn’t usually take much extra to get the pH too low. Investing in a pH meter is totally worth it and Fast Buds has a blog post somewhere where they mention that as a top tip.
@Flex1, I didn’t have any particular problem with smell but it’s legal to grow outdoors here and I live in a decent neighbourhood so I wasn’t too worried about someone noticing and then stealing the plant. My sense of smell is fairly poor I think, but without the concern about legality it’s more about just being polite. Smelly flowers such as evening scented stock also give plausible deniability. Sometimes you can catch a whiff from across the yard, especially if you’re returning from somewhere, but most of the time it wasn’t too bad. Some strains are known to be low odour like Northern Lights so that is an option too.
As for pH meter mine is a HM digital pH-80 which I got at the local hydro store. I think I’ll also get their TDS meter as the cheaper ones kind of piss me off.
@Northern_Ent, appreciate the tip. Any brand you recommend? Do you mind if I ask you about your outdoor grows in the past. In particular the smell. I'm growing outdoors and have neighbors I don't want to disturb with overly pungent smells. Few houses down from me definitely doesn't care, but I kind of do. How close to the plant do you start to smell it at its peak?
